I am far from a coffee expert, but I have definitely started to develop a keener taste for truly fresh coffee. As a result, I have tried several grinders over the years. They were all way too loud, too tall, too imprecise – I did not like any of them. However, the Fellow Ode Brew Grinder has none of those negatives. The first thing that jumps out is the compact size – it easily fits under cabinets on a kitchen countertop. That is what really bothered me about the competition, they were just too tall and bulky. While it may be compact, it is solid as a brick and much heavier than expected. The Fellow Ode Brew Grinder weighs in at nearly 13 lbs. – nearly twice the weight of a competitor’s product I own. It makes the Ode grinder very stable and probably assists in deadening sound. Speaking of the sound, this is hands down the quietest grinder I have ever heard. It is not silent by any means but what a difference compared to other units I have tried. In terms of performance and control, I think it did a great job. The large dial on the front is very precise to get the correct grind. I was used to the grind settings on my old unit and quickly found out that it does not exactly translate between units. It took me several tries until I was able to nail down the grind setting that I tasted best to me. Grind quality and consistency were perfect once I found the setting I liked. There was nothing wrong with the Fellow Ode Brew Grinder, there was just a bit of a learning curve on my part. What you will learn to appreciate about the Fellow grinder is the attention to detail. Everything is machined well, the fit and finish are just great. Fellow says it best - “With a magnetically aligned catch that snaps into place, a grinds knocker to reduce grind retention, and easy pour fins for a smooth transition of grinds into your brewer, a stacked variety of carefully engineered features set Ode apart from the pack.” I know that sounds like marketing buzz, but it really is true. The catch easier snaps into place because of the magnet, the grind knocker does reduce grinds getting stuck and so on. So what about the cons? There really are not any major cons. At $300, it is a bit on the high side but not unreasonably so. I did find some the grinds did not always drop completely and if you do not tap it enough, they will spill out when you remove the container. Some people may be put off by the small hopper and container, but I found it perfectly sized. I never understood when other units on the market have gigantic, oversized hoppers. You do not need something huge, trust me. This brings us to would I recommended the grinder? Absolutely. I ran into no issues to speak of , it is perfectly sized and looks like a piece of art. The grinder performed well and it is shockingly quiet for a grinder. The Fellow Ode Brew Grinder is a home run.

Had the grinder for a year. It jams constantly. They instructed me to wet the beans before using the grinder because it has issues with static. Didn't help. They told me to use less than half a canister of beans, even though it's rated for a full canister. Didn't help. Tried to get SSP burrs installed to see if a more consistent grind helps. Burrs got stuck in the installation process and now it's unusable. Even when it works, it's not that great. Kind of an annoying piece of equipment all around. You're paying for style.

I recently received the Fellow Ode Electric Brew Grinder. I have an older grinder from a different manufacturer that I have used for a couple of years now. I was looking for a change, and when the Fellow surfaced, I quickly grabbed it up. The first thing that got my attention with this grinder was its looks. I know, I know. But I gravitate to modern looking buildings and appliances, so my finding this an attractive nuisance was not surprising. Being a new-to-market grinder, I couldn’t assess its grinding ability or ease of cleaning, but it looked good and that is all that counts. The shipping weight was a bit over 13 lbs, noticeably heavier than my old grinder. Unboxing it, I admit that it didn’t disappoint. It is not too big and not too small. It is, however, a very solid and seemingly well-built grinder. It has a quality feel to it, which is unlike my old grinder that felt like a small bump would send it to grinder heaven. After reading the instructions, which I strongly recommend, I set it up for my first grinding run. First things first, dial in the proper grind size. The instructions show a diagram of the dial, which goes from the lowest #1 fine-level setting to the #11 coarse-level setting. Here is how you should use the numbering scheme: • #1-#2 Setting = Prismo • #2-#3 Setting = Cupping • #1-#4 Setting = AeroPress • #2-#5 Setting = Pour-Over • #4-#6 Setting = Electric Coffee Maker • #6-#10 Setting = French Press • #9-#11 Setting = Cold Brew I think the grounds capture cup (or Catch) on this grinder is clever. It is painted the same black color as the grinder itself and is easy to handle. It is not especially large, but it is sufficiently large enough especially if you plan on grinding coffee on a daily basis. The Catch has a magnet on its bottom that adheres to the spot on the grinder under which the coffee grounds are expended. If some of the coffee grounds still in the grinder need to be knocked out, there is a lever on the side of the grinder that you push down that does precisely that. If the grinder is used daily, the company recommends cleaning it every 3 months. This cleaning is accomplished by using tablets that you can buy on Amazon, and the instruction manual specifically mentions the “Urnex Grindz” cleaning tablets. Or, you can clean the unit by using a stiff brush. To clean the Catch, wipe gently with a soft towel and some warm soapy water. If you do use the cleaning tablets, don’t forget to reference the instruction manual to ensure you use the cleaning tablets properly. So, how has the grinder worked for me? My very first observation was how fast and how quiet it was. Seriously, my old grinder was so loud I would have to back away from the unit while it was grinding. I also had to close the doors in our kitchen to ensure I didn’t wake anyone from their sleep. Seriously loud! I’m guessing in the 80db-85db range. This grinder is much, much quieter. I used an app to gauge its decibel output, and it was around 71db-73db. According to the Internet, 70db is considered generally safe. A shower, by contrast, falls into the 76db range. A normal conversation is in the 60db range. I checked the grounds from the Fellow afterwards and compared them to grounds from my older grinder. The grounds from the Fellow were much, much more consistent in size. I chose a grinder-setting of 4.5 (see settings table, above) since I use an electric coffee maker. Anything within the #4-#6 range would have been appropriate. So, how did the coffee taste? Very nice, and exactly what I would expect when grinding my own coffee. And on top of the great coffee taste, the Fellow grinder is also quieter and faster, and more consistent when grinding. This is an easy one for me. I am giving this unit a 5-star rating.

I admit it. I do like kitchen gadgets but very few have impressed me like this Fellow Ode Brew grinder has. From the clean, metallic design to the quiet operation, it has caught everybody’s attention at home. Let’s start with the basics. First, guys in general don’t like manuals and when we do read one, we soon get rid of it just because we don’t need manuals. That is, until we do. The cheat sheet printed inside the lid ensures that when the day that you’ll regret having thrown that manual away comes, you just need to look inside. This is so simple and brilliant at the same time. It tells you the grind number you need to set the dial to depending on the type of brewing you want. Second, some things need to be light, but a grinder is not one of those. This one is small and heavy. You’d never tell just by looking at it. That makes it very stable on the counter or whatever surface you have it on. It also gives you that feeling that it is strong and can do the job very well. It’s not just a feeling. It really does all that. We tried with different beans, including a Brazilian kind we found at a Brazilian store and the result was better than expected every single time. Pour-over was simply perfect as well as French press. It has a ton of grind settings for every taste and imagination. Also, as I mentioned earlier, its operation is surprisingly quiet for a grinder, and fast too. The only issue was that it was messy until I got the hang of it – my girlfriend got it right from the start though. Just don’t overload it with more beans than necessary. I quickly learned that keeping the burrs clean and checking its alignment every once in a while, will keep it working flawlessly. Oh yeah, that manual that my girlfriend read has the instructions to keep it running as it should. Had I read it first, I wouldn’t have run into any issues. I don’t know how it will perform in the long run but for now, it deserves a spotlight on our kitchen counter. Those are my girlfriend’s words by the way but everybody who has seen it and tasted the result of its brewing wants to buy one. Highly recommended

Let's face it. You have to be REALLY, REALLY serious about coffee to spend $300 on a coffee grinder. The connoisseur of connoisseurs of java.... And if that is you, you probably will be impressed with this Fellow-Ode grinder. The first thing you notice, before you even open the box is this thing is unbelievably heavy it is for a coffee grinder. It weighs almost 15 pounds. Once you unpack it, it's easy to see why. The grinder appears to built from armor plate. You could run over it with a semi and probably not hurt it. Heavy duty is an understatement. So, yep, this thing is as durable as they come. And one result of that is that is it is very quiet, since the motor and specially designed burr grinding mechanism is packed tightly behind all that armor plating. You wont be waking up the rest of the family grinding coffee with this thing. That's good because the minimalist design of this thing means you HAVE to grind coffee fresh every day. There is no hopper to keep the beans ready for grinding . Just a big rectangular hole over the grinding mechanism. This by design, according to the company, because coffee stored in a hopper would be exposed to air and degrade (remember, serious coffee drinkers only!) . So, of course, you never want to grind more coffee that you are going to need in the next few minutes. The motor runs until every bean is ground, and then stops automatically. And this is pretty much the only automatic function on this grinder. You must measure out the necessary amount of beans daily turn the giant dial on the front to the desired grind and hit the start button. Measurement marking inside the cup are supposed to help you determine the amount of beans to grind but I found them way off, about double the amount I normally use. Recommended grind settings are shown inside the lid on the hopper. Very fine for drip pots, between 1 and 2, between 6 and 11 for press pot and a very coarse 10-11 for cold brew. Since this is all very subjective, you will have to experiment to find what works best for your brewing method. This is a high-end burr grinder so the grind is very uniform, which produces an even, accurate taste, true to the beans and the roast you are using, rather than the oddly shaped rubble that comes out of cheap chopping grinders -- or lesser burr grinders. When finer grounds are mixed in with coarser ones, the taste can be harsher than it should be. You have to be very serious about coffee to appreciate these nuances but if you are one of those people, you may have found your coffee grinder. I have been grinding coffee at home for decades and found the grind produced by the Fellows Ode produced a very smooth, balanced, unblemished cup of coffee using my go-to Costa Rican dark blend. It had a bit less bite than I was getting using another burr grinder, which can be good or bad, depending on your taste. I use a press pot and opted for a 6 grind, the finest setting recommended for this kind of coffee maker. I suspect the main difference comes down to the grind speed: Quite slow with this grinder, often very fast with lesser grinders, with the added friction and heat affecting the taste of the coffee. Design aesthetics are subjective but I frankly find this thing to be pretty ugly -- or if you want to be charitable, utilitarian. It is very boxy and painted flat black from top the bottom. The only exception to the all black color scheme are the white numbers on the grind dial and a small stainless steel tab on the side, which is tapped a few times at the end the grind to get the last grounds out of the grinding chamber. (well, sorta. It doesn't work that great) . Even the grind button, on the base, is black. There is no overall on/off switch, no lights and no settings beyond the grind level. I do like the design of the cup that catches the grounds. It is stainless steel (painted black of course) with a magnet built into the bottom. That ensures remains centered under the hole where the grounds come out. But the flimsy flexible lid is poorly designed and does not always fit snugly unless you are careful . This grinder is also relatively compact, since it does not have a coffee bean hopper, so does not take up a lot of space on the counter As with most coffee grinders, this one can get a bit messy. The grinding process imparts a lot of static electricy to the grounds and they tend to fly around a lot once you remove the cup from the grinder. However, I got fewer flyaway grounds with the Fellows Ode than with the burr grinder I used before. In summary: Pros: Very sturdy construction, very quiet, compact, , good uniform grind that produces excellent coffee, magnetic grind cup, less grind mess than some burr grinders. Cons: Very expensive, ugly design, no automation, convenience or advanced features, , no bean hopper, very heavy, flimsy lid on grind cup can be fussy.

I love coffee of all types, and I have various devices to make whatever my fancy is in the moment from ice to expresso to complex European concisions. Oh and did I mention my in laws are from Colombia - Coffee is life!! Needless to say, my current grinder is very nice but this takes things to the next level. I love the chart on the cap to help me easily figure out how many beans to put in the hopper. The grind consistency on all settings is perfect - and yes I used a microscope - FANTASTIC! What else: Very quiet Grinds everything you put in so if you change the type of coffee there is no lingering after taste. The product screams quality - solid construction Beautiful sleek design. I cant wait for the in-laws to come over to share some amazing Coffee. I know you will love this for whatever your grinding needs are. Enjoy and stay caffeinated (or not).

So Hard To Use A Sasquatch Could Not Do It

The packaging is very sleek and modern. The unboxing experience is similar to opening up a new Apple product. Unlike Apple, there is a little easter egg inside, a photo of a Sasquatch pouring coffee after using this Fellow grinder. The photo reminded me of those Geico commercials where the Sasquatch would say "...it's so easy, even a Sasquatch can do it!" But I would say that is not the case here. Once you have it out of the box you'll notice how sleek it is and small it is. I'm glad that the lid of the grinder explains the different grinding options. I was also impressed that the catch is magnetized but the wow factor ended there, unfortunately. In the manual, it states that this grinder is quiet but it is just as loud compared to other grinders I have used. The sound is the equivalent of a weed wacker or a child screaming. It is not quiet in the slightest. The catch also did not do a good job of catching. With the catch, there is an optional lid you can use. After using the grinder with and without the lid I have determined that the brush they included is necessary because the machine will always create a mess. No matter what I tried it always created a mess and it's disappointing because some of my grounds were wasted due to the fact. A great unboxing experience and a great-looking product cannot make up for the fact that the Grinder fails at its main purpose described - to grind cleanly and quietly.

I’ve always been curious about replacing my $10 coffee grinder with a burr grinder to see if the coffee grinder made a difference. Spoiler alert, it made a massive difference! The Ode grinder is simple, intuitive, space saving, and looks good. My biggest concern with kitchen appliances is whether or not they are going to fit under the countertop. Most grinders have massive hoppers that makes it a pain to keep the grinder in one spot. The Ode doesn’t have a hopper, instead you load the exact amount of coffee beans you want in the single dose loader, place the included grinds cup under the catch and it’ll snap into place since the cup magnetically snaps into place when it gets close enough to the proper alignment. There is no guessing whether or not the cup is in position ro not! After placing the included Ode cup and hitting the button on the front bottom right of the Ode, you just wait until the Ode automatically stops grinding when it detects no more coffee beans are in the burrs. Then, you hit the grinds knocker a few times and you’re good to go. However, I will say there was more than one occasion where I hit the grinds knocker multiple times, removed the grinds cup, and coffee grinds fell out later on in the day due to static issues. This is the biggest problem with the grinder. I grind mostly for french press and pour overs and have had no issues with the consistency of the grinds; the ode provides extremely consistent grinds and does it quietly. In fact, the Ode is quitter than my $10 grinder, and my friends’ burr grinders. I am pretty sure it is the quietest burr grinder I know of. This is why the Ode is so good! It is compact to fit on the countertop without demanding too much space, it looks nice, and it is super quiet when compared to other grinders. Other than the static issue the Ode performs extremely well and looks good doing it. I just wish the Ode could grind fine enough to make espressos. Fellow offers SSP Red Speed 64mm Flat Burrs that would enable you to grind fine enough for espresso, but it is not recommended and would probably void the warranty. My guess is the motor isn’t designed to grind to an espresso consistency. If Ode fixes these two issues I think this would be the perfect home coffee grinder.

The Fellow Ode electric brew grinder is a great addition to anyone’s coffee setup. This grinder is quieter then most electric grinders, and does an excellent job of grinding those coffee beans consistently for that perfect cup of coffee. This grinder is recommended for brewed coffee as you will most likely not get a fine enough grind for espresso shots. Build quality and design is also excellent and will fit nicely with any decor. If you’re in the market for a high end and beautiful coffee grinder you won’t be disappointed the Fellow Ode electric brew grinder.

I normally don't mention this part, but: I was impressed with the quality of packaging and instruction. It is a very classy looking grinder and was packaged like it was premium. Set up was quick and, after an initial wipe down and reading of the instructions, I tested grind size on my favorite beans. The consistency batch to batch was excellent and the auto shutoff feature was very nice. Cleanup was straight forward with little to no grounds clinging issues. I also tried a regrind from a coarse to a finer grind and this seemed to work well enough, taste didn't seem to be affected either - sometimes a regrind leaves a bitter taste. The magnetic cup position was handy and the design of the receptacle did a good job helping to control pour of the grounds. All around A+ from my perspective.

This thing is beautifully made, built like a tank, and simple to use…But it disappoints in several other areas for me. I’ve been using it daily for over two weeks, and lately the grinder stops grinding before it grinds all the beans. The beans don’t fall down into the chute themselves, they get hung up or something. I have to actually leave the lid off and poke the beans down into the grinder with a butter knife or spoon handle. I’m not sure if the angle of the hopper isn’t steep enough? But it will not grind all the beans and stops well before the hopper is empty. Then, I use the knocker to knock off any loose grounds, and when I remove the cup, there are always grounds all over the silicon lid and all over the counter. The other thing that bugs me is the “fins” inside the cup, I believe they’re intended to guide the grounds or beans like a spout, but they just get grounds hung up on them and make more of a mess. The adjustment of this is nice, and I like the guide on the underside of the lid, I just wish it was more efficient at grinding. The sound level is much quieter than my old grinder. Overall I want to love it, and I will continue to use it. Hopefully it gets better!

This grinder is near PERFECT for someone who is a coffee enthusiast. You may have to expiriment with it a few times but once you've found the proper grind you can set it and forget it will then deliver exactly the same grind every time you use it. It's a bit pricey but if you are a conniseur of coffee then the purchase is a no-brainer. Very highly recommended to anyone.

While this grinder looks great and has an excellent grind output, it is not reliable. For the price, you'd think something like this would last a long time or be repairable. I bought this grinder less than 3 years ago and it shorted out mid grind last week. I'm a home user and was a fan of Fellow (I own two of their kettles and a bunch of accessories), but I will not be buying any more of their products. When I contacted support I was told the grinder was not repairable and "out of warranty" - and offered a 10% discount after a week of back and forth.
