I always enjoyed sy-fi & reliving it was interesting. It is light-hearted & definitely not hi-tech. It was a pleasant way to spend an evening while doing my needlework. It wasn't something requiring a lot of concentration.

    A Sci-Fi Masterpiece

From the mind of Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Angel", "Dollhouse", and "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" comes this short-lived but beloved space adventure. FIREFLY is a "space western" set 500 years in the future, long after mankind has abandoned Earth in favor of a new galaxy. The story follows the crew of the Firedly-class transport ship Serenity, a ragtag group of outlaws, fugitives, and eccentrics led by Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), a war veteran. Constantly on the run from the bureocratic Alliance, pirates, and other outlaws, Captain Mal and the crew try to make a living as best they can. Though this series was cruelly treated by Fox and cancelled after only 9 aired episodes, it has gone on to become a beloved cult classic with millions of fans called "Browncoats" worldwide. Among those fans are a few NASA astronauts, who have brought the series up for viewing on the International Space Station! The series is rich with Whedon's trademark humor and clever dialogue, but it also excels in telling unique dramatic stories. The entire cast is terrific, the special effects still look good today, and the science of the space-travel is for the most part accurate, something almost unheard of in sci-fi! If you're a fan on the genre, you owe it to yourself to check this series out.

    Amazing series cancelled too soon!

Firefly is an amazing series. Joss Whedon really impressed me as a long time Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. I truly didn't think anything could compare to Buffy but he managed to equal Buffy in creativity and ingenuity, and perhaps even surpassed it. It's hard to describe this show because you want to be so in depth and give away the episodes accidentally through your zealous explanation of why the show is as great as it is, but the safe answer when someone says, what is Firefly about is to say it's a space western. Entirely downplays the awesomeness that is the show but, in the simplest of terms, this is what it is. But it's so much more. There's humor, plenty of humor with the biting, sarcastic wit and banter that Buffy fans know and love, but there's also amazing dramatic elements to the show as well. It's a light hearted series with darker features and a great subplot. If you haven't seen it, but it. It's truly that good. I'm only sad we don't have more seasons of this show, but at least there's the movie Serenity, which you have to see after you buy Firefly. Heck, buy them both, it's a great investment if you're a fan of clever writing, on point acting, and really who isn't? Lol.

    Phenomenal Sci-Fi series

I, like so many other, first watched this show after it had already been scheduled for removal from the network. Up until that time, my thinking had been 'Cowboy Sci-Fi? I don't think so'. Now I've joined the saddened legions of viewers that regret not being able to see any more episodes. There have been other excellent sci-fi tv shows (Star Trek - Next Generation, Battle Star Gallactica). Firefly is not these, is something else unique that pulls you in from the pilot show. Yes, due in large part to fan demand, they made a movie (Serenity) to help all of us struggling with Firefly withdrawals. It did not satisfy, but instead gave you 1 final taste of greatness before sending fans spiraling down into bitter remorse. On second thought, don't watch Firefly. The high it gives you is not worth the crash on the other side. Ok it is, but the crash sucks.

Cult Si-Fi Series deserves its worldwide fanbase.

FIREFLY, is a sci-fi world cult phenomenon. Written by master story teller Joss Weadon (currently DOLLHOUSE, and formerly BUFFY etc), it tells the tales of the crew of the antiquated but versatile star ship SERENITY. Set in a not too distant "future" it has a rather Western feel as settlers from an over crowded and used up "Earth that Was" colonise planets around another G class star. Rather than another boring Tales of their Adventures, the original series describes with much humour and quirkyness how a group of dysfunctional virtual strangers confront life's challenges, their passage to becoming a great space faring family and their realisation that the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. Cancelled mid first season, it went on through fan pressure to become a full length wide release feature movie (SERENITY), now begging for either a sequel or a second season. As the solid fan base will tell you "You can't stop the Signal..." My favorite Episode: "Out of Gas"

    A Classic!

A few years ago I was browsing the family selection when I came upon this boxed set that one of my family members apparently had acquired. I had never heard of firefly so I wasn't too interested in a tv series that I had never heard of before. After not finding anything else I reluctantly put the first disc into the player and, i have to tell you, I couldnt stop watching it. Everything about this show is expertly done. The stories, the characters, the acting, everything. Even the humor adds to the show which is something I find to be rare in shows like this. After watching every single episode I wanted more. Even after watching the fantastic serenity movie I wanted more. Im frustrated how this great of a show was cancelled while others that are, quite frankly, quite terrible run rampant on several channels. Im just sad that I couldn't have supported this show when it still mattered. Anyway, I recommend this show to anyone. Buy it!

    Sci-Fi's hidden gem

I am a big fan of science fiction, however, I do believe that 90% of the Sci-Fi out there is terrible. Firefly is definitely a hidden gem that lands in the top 10%. Had it not been for inconsistent time slots, Firefly would have become a TV success to surpass all of Joss Whedon's (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) previous projects. However, despite being canceled early in it's life, this box inspired enough loyal supporters to warrant a follow-up wide-release film, Serenity. The plot synopsis will catch you up on what the show is about, but as a fan, I highly recommend giving it a shot. After episode 13, you'll be clambering to track down Serenity.

    TOTALLY ENTERTAINING

I had purchased the DVD of Serenity. After watching it several times I was wishing that there was more. I found that it had been a Short lived TV series on Fox. After checking out Best Buy, they had the complete series for a good price. I purchased the DVD set and started watching it. I became very involved in the characters, the plots and the overall way the shows were created. I can't believe the 14 episodes went so quick while I watched them. This was created in 2002 and this show was so much better than all this Reality TV shows & paid programming that seems to be taking over all the stations. It's a shame that the people at Fox made the mistake of not making more of this show. Well all I can say is that with all the bad shows they have on TV now, I definetly will be watching this DVD set a lot more.

    Excellent (but short) series

I've owned this set for quite a while and just haven't gotten around to watch it. I finaly did see it recently and couldn't quit watching. I basically watched 1 episode a night for just over two weeks. It was easy to get into, had great character development and was really interesting. Firefly isn't what you'd expect in a typical sci-fi show. It's very much a sci fi western. They even transport cattle in one episode. The outfits are a conglomeration of Western, Chinese and 80's sci fi uniforms. The acting is excellent, the shows have interesting twists and turns and I wish more people (including me) had known about this gold mine when it was actually on TV. It'd be nice to see a good sci fi show on the air. I haven't seen Serenity (the movie) yet, but I do own it and will be watching it soon.

Great Series for Western Lovers and Sci -Fi Lovers

If you've never seen Firefly, Fox's great Sci-Fi show, I wouldn't be surprised. The show was not advertised at all, and they dropped it right after it started because no one watched it. I think if this show would have kept going it would have been a lot more than an underground hit. Anyway, if you like Sci-Fi then you will probably love this show. If you like western themes this show will also be for you. It takes place in the far future, and follows a group of smugglers on their passings with warlord like scumbags and the giant republic ships who ignore the less rich planets. It really makes you root for the group, even if the things they are doing would be considered bad. The show has lots of action, but also has a lighter side and will make you laugh at times. There is also a lot of character development throughout the series. The good thing about this is the whole series fits in one box, the bad thing is some of the plot is cut off when they pulled the show from the airwaves. If you go in expecting to be disappointed by an abrupt ending you will like it. Don't waste your time with Serenity. The movie picks up where the show left off, but changed the feel to a Sci-Fi horror, and ruins a lot of story that should be resolved but now can't because of killed characters. If you have to see it, I'd say rent, because it is a disservice to the show in my opinion.

This show was recommended by a friend to watch and after watching the first two episodes, I was hooked and had to finish the entire series over two nights. The acting and characters really lure you in. It has great dialog, great storyline, humorous and interesting characters, basically all the the elements the networks hate giving us intelligent humans to watch. I actually saw it a few years ago but it was from a borrowed copy so I felt it was important to show my gratitude and I buy my own.

I really like the series and I would have paid the full price for it. When I looked on the shelf in the store, they were sold out. I checked the in store computer for availability and price. I was so stunned by the listed price that I actually asked a clerk if that posting was correct. After being assured that special price was indeed what they were asking, I ordered mine on line when I got home. When I went to the store to pick it up, the staff was very helpful and very friendly. Just the sort of shopping experience that will guarantee my return business. Thanks Best Buy!

I am not a fan of science fiction... I would go so far as to say that I sincerely HATE most of it. Firefly is different. From the first time I watched an episode, I was hooked. Everything about this show is different and compelling to watch. There's action, comedy, romance, suspense, drama and every other genre title under the sun. Everything meshes so well that it's hard not to get sucked in. You come to care so much about the characters that it's nearly heartbreaking to know that it's the only season that will ever be. Check out Serenity for a little closure...

This series wipes the slate clean as far as sci-fi goes. No longer do you have to be considered a nerd to love sci-fi. This series was too cool for the competiton to deal with. The characters were real people and their adventures were bold and very entertaining. The actors were believable and the sets were amazing. The over the top stories were spared and avoided. This show didn't need 3 seasons and multiple incarnations of other series and movies to convince us (the fans) that this show was going to rule all. Get this and you'll see for yourself...I ain't lyin'...

    The Season to have

This would be my one DVD set to save if the house were on fire. I normally don't watch shows more than once, but I have watched these at least twice already, and that is saying a lot. If you would have told me I would love a western scifi show, I would have chuckled, but this doesn't get any better. 14 episodes is all you will get, so savor them. I am still incredulous that the show was cancelled and there is no plan to bring it back. And if you are a female and can get through the series without a serious crush on Nathan Fillion, you are tough!!

    Space cowboys!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Fox did a fantastic job of allowing creator Joss Whedon's pipedream of a cowboy story in space. Nathan Fillion revitalizes his career here (without Firefly, we would have no Dr. Horrible! or Castle), and Adam Baldwin presents a tough guy that loves his mother like a fat kid loves cake. The visuals are top-notch and the sound design is superb. If Fox had been thinking clearly, they would have granted this show at least 2 more seasons to round out story arcs with this fantastic cast and terrific director.
