As long as you are within their coverage area this is the sweetest deal out there for a full year of cellular service.

This service has really gone downhill

I've used this service off & on for a couple years. It has really gotten bad. I bought two sims earlier in the year. One does not work at all. With the other data works, but I cannot make phone calls. The support number is hard to find, and when you call it you get an automated message directing you to the website, and then it hangs up on you. There email support is completely unresponsive. I contacted Best Buy and they will not do anything about it, or help in anyway.

I returned it for refund after 3 days of frustration. Everything is set up to get money from the customer. It took 2days to figure out how to cancel the service. I then returned the SIM to Best Buy and got a refund. They were fine, but I suggest that they dump Freedom Pop as a cellphone provider.

Plan is VOIP based, not truly "unlimited" talk+SMS

You get what you pay for. The advertising is false; you do not truly get unlimited talk and texting. It is not clear at all from the marketing, but everything is VOIP based, so it uses your data allowance for text & calls, and then gives you a data credit for the data used when you text (using their app) or call (using their dialer). I could not get the native Android dialer and text messaging app to work, despite articles on the Freedompop website that indicated that the native apps can be used. We are nearing the 1GB data cap, and I received an email notification that "unlimited" talking and texting will not be available once we reach the data cap unless we are connected to WIFI. This makes the plan useless as a cellular phone talk & text plan. The VOIP service is not reliable. We have had call issues; many incoming calls do not ring the phone.

It is not a usual sim card or plan. Requires their app to make and receive calls. It will not work with Google voice to make calls. If you want a cheap backup sim, go for ting or redpocket or something. This is bad. Will not buy again.
