One of the greatest Slasher films of all time

I've already recorded my thoughts on the original Friday the 13th. I think it's among the top two or three greatest slasher films ever made. It has a kind of 'Blair Witch Project' feel about it, as you never see who or what you are dealing with until very close to the end. This creates an aura of dread, as well as a nearly tangible feeling that these characters are pretty much doomed. I don't waste too much time mincing words about such matters-to me, this is a great movie. Not just a great slasher film, but a great film, by ANY standards. And it continues to grow on me. By now, I've seen it around 100 times, but I continue to like it better over time. One word of caution, though. They refer to it as 'uncut',as if this is a big deal. I expected there to be major differences, such as reinserted deleted scenes or something of that nature. There isn't. So don't expect to get anything radically different than what you've had in the past. In fact, the major difference-the death scene of Kevin Bacon-looked better BEFORE. Some things get cut for a reason. But the picture and sound quality are outstanding. The other special features are okay. But if you are satisfied with the version you have at present, there is no overwhelming reason to replace your old dvd with this one. A lot has been said about this being a graphically violent film. That may be the case, up to a point. But I believe that it's often what you DON'T see that most powerfully affects your imagination. And that's where this movie really sets itself apart. The killer is hardly ever shown, up until the final twenty minutes, but their presense hovers ominously and continually over the entire movie. For example, you could consider the scene where the girl is brushing her teeth at the sink. Off to her far left, we see a shower curtain shift a couple of inches. We, as the audience, realize the implications: if she goes back there, she will be killed. She,of course, is oblivious to the danger. The killer is back there, silently waiting. The movement of the shower curtain is so subtle, so understated.yet you know full well what it means. Most of the horror movies I have sat through, even taken in their entirety, simply do not compare with that brief, seemingly trivial scene. Mystery, dread, suspense, horror, tension-all found, in abundance, in a scene that only lasts a minute or two. I regard this as a masterpiece.

    Great Childhood memories

In 1957, a young boy named Jason Voorhees drowned in Camp Crystal Lake then a year later some camp counslors were horribly murdered mysteriously. Now in 1979, the camp is about to reopen thanks to a new owner Steve (Peter Brouwer) with counselors but suddenly a mysterious killer is murder each of them, one by bloody one until one survives to reveal who the true killer is. Co-starring Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Laurie Bartham, Mark Nelson, Robbin Morgan, Harry Crosby and Betsy Palmer. This is a unique and stylish slasher shocker that started off as an idea by Victor Miller based off campfire legends including the legend of Cropsy the killer which was later made as "The Burning" and influenced by films by "Halloween" and "Psycho", Sean S. Cunningham who produced the 1972 sleaze-feast "Last House on The Left" produced and directed the project to make it low budget. Made in 1979 then finished in 1980,it opened up on june 13th 1980 distributed by Paramount Pictures to become one of the highest grossing movies at the box-office that year despite bad reviews including Roger Ebert who declared it nothing but a "Halloween" rip-off. What makes the movie so effective is the "Psycho"-esque score by Harry Manfredini and of course the memorable gore effects by Tom Savini which shocked the daylights out of people when it first came out yet they are still effective. Although Jason isn't the true killer in this movie, even though he does appear in a couple of sequences and doesn't become the villain until the sequels, the film offers scares and shocks from beginning to end as it spawned sequels, imitators, a slew of trick or treaters with Jason costumes and a remake in the works, it even paved way for "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and other slasher movies of the 80's. This Blu-Ray brings us for the first time in the U.S. the uncut unrated version with more violent footage that was toned down to avoid an "X" rating originally. It offers great picture and sound quality in the best high definition possible with great extras like interviews, featurettes, a reunion at a horror convention, "Tales from Camp Blood part 1" Short film, audio commentary and theatrical trailer.

This DVD of Friday the 13th Uncut Deluxe Edition is the latest re-release of the movie. It is the "uncut" version, but i wouldn't say too much was different. However, this is a classic slasher filck that has remained a hit since it came out almost 30 years ago. In many ways you will see it is similar to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) including the music score. The only difference is much more blood, a faster pace, and it's on a summer camp, but the fact that it re-invented horror once again like Psycho was amazing. Though Jason does not show up until the sequel (as said by Ghostface in Scream-1996) this is still an eerie horror movie. Make sure you get this new release and see it before you see the 2009 remake! Also, check out these others to complete you collection... Friday the 13th Part 2 Friday the 13th Part 3 3D (for the first time since theaters) His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th Parents are Strongly CAUTIONED, this movie contains material not appropriate for children under 14-15 (in my opinion)

The colors are bright and very vivid sometimes the night scenes are back to dvd standards but remember this is 30 years old! All in all a great add to any Friday the 13th fan :)

The start of the 80's slasher craze

A solid film that is less memorable on its own than it is for the legacy it started. A solid thriller that shocked audiences with a twist, it largely holds up today but is by no means among the best the horror genre has seen. This blu ray is sharp and clean with a few decent special features. A solid recommendation for horror junkies.
