Unlike recent Ghibli films From up on Poppy Hill goes back to the golden age of Ghibli. One of the final Miyazaki films to be made (Father Hayao is retiring), father and son (Goro Miyazaki) collaborate to make a beautiful coming of age story set in 1963 Japan. Movie is beautifully paced at 1 1/2 hours with a rich story and gorgeous animation. Family friendly story with plenty for all ages. The English Dub was wonderful. GKids did a great job to keep the flavor of the original while adding just a little bit of dialogue to help explain some of the unexplained back story. Subtitles for both the English closed caption and original Japanese dialogue are available along with 5.1 for both the English and Japanese audio. Hours of extras with subtitles included. Love the option of either Bluray or DVD. I am happy I preordered this and would happily recommend to anyone who love animation and great story telling. For those unfamiliar with Ghibli films this is a good gateway movie that is easily accessible to a western audience.

    Another Studio Ghibli Classic

Studio Ghibli is one of the best animation studios in the world, if not the absolute best. While this movie may not have gotten as much attention as some of their other films, you'd be missing out if you pass by this one, especially since it's a great price for a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack. As is usual for their movies, the animation is magnificent. Details and colors just pop, and it's easy to lose yourself in the world of the movie. Especially in HD on the Blu-Ray, the presentation is absolutely flawless. The plot is somewhat minimalist, focusing on two main points: The relationship between the main characters, Umi and Shun, and also the kids of their school banding together to save their clubhouse. Everything about the movie and characters feels human, even real, since there aren't any fantasy or magical trappings to overcome. The characters even react realistically to the few plot twists that are thrown in, something not seen in a lot of modern anime. I don't want to say anything else to spoil the movie, but if you enjoy beautiful animation and "slice of life" style stories, then this is definitely a movie that you shouldn't miss.

Studio Ghibli's Legacy of Excellence Continues

Goro Miyazaki worried all of Studio Ghibli's fans with rather unenjoyable "Tales from Earthsea," but he has now redeemed himself with this fantastic addition into the Ghibli library. Granted, his father, Hayao, wrote the screenplay, but I would not discredit Goro's involvement with the picture. The animation is stunning with vibrant colors and great attention to detail. There are several unique, funny, and lovable characters throughout the film. The music is light and airy during quiet moments, and driving and catchy during the upbeat scenes. The plot is a simple, enjoyable slice of life with some very tender moments. This is definitely one of my top 5 Ghibli films.

As an anime and Studio Ghibli fan, I had been waiting since I first heard of From Up On Poppy Hill to see it. Since the theater near my home never played it (limited release) , I waited for the DVD. It was well worth the wait : the story (written by the great Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son Goro) is a well written realistic look at Japan changing after World War II , but not wanting to completely let go of their past. :)

This movie is a great watch. If you're getting this, thinking it would be like the other Studio Ghibli movie, you're wrong. There's no fantasy involved at all. HOWEVER, it is a GREAT SLICE OF LIFE movie that takes place in the 1960s in Japan. It follows high school student Umi and her daily activities. One day, she finds out that she is the center of a poem. The poem describes her daily routine of raising a set of signal flags with the message "I pray for safe voyages". And that's where our slice of life adventure takes off. The movie itself is very enjoyable, and you'll find the conflicts engaging. The movie's pacing is nicely done. So, please give this movie a chance.

Best Buy had the Studio Ghibli films on Blu-ray on sale for an unmissable price. So, I had to add this one to my collection. The GKIDS releases are excellent, which I have gushed about in my other reviews. If you're a fan of Studio Ghibli, pick this one up. And if you're not familiar with the catalogue, now may be a great time to see what you've been missing.

    Yet another overlooked film

Seems to me that people only watch Ghibli films for the "Fantasy" elements. And nothing wrong with that, but when I mention this movie either people have never heard of it or they think it's was a "Boring Waste if Time". And that's heartbreaking to hear. Give this one a chance if you haven't.

Studio Ghibli can seem to do no wrong, even with movies that aren't fantastical like 'Spirited Away' or 'Ponyo'. This movie is more rooted in reality along the lines of 'Whisper of the Heart' or 'The Wind Rises' but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Be sure to add this movie to your collection if you're a Miyazaki fan (even though this isn't directly one of his movies).

This film is about teenagers in Yokohama, Japan in the 1960's. The life of that era is beautifully portrayed in the film. The art is beautiful and not forgettable, and the voice actors are pretty good, the characters are believable and the story really comes to life. It's nice to take time and enjoy a film that focuses on the simplicity of life and how enjoyable it can be.

This was a very inspiring movie that my daughters and I enjoyed. As they are getting a little older and phasing out of al lot of the Disney movies, this movie (along with many others from Studio Ghibli) was enjoyed by all of us.

Beautiful, slow-paced, emotional, relaxing movie with a similar feel as Whisper of the Heart. It includes a blu-ray + dvd disc with many bonus features, as well as a small booklet with art and small blurbs by the director. I wish all the studio ghibli blu-rays included small booklets like that.

The plot is not typical of Studio Ghibli in that it's not fantasy related. It's a realistic period film that could easily have been done as live action. The story is enjoyable and the film is beautiful visually. The video and audio are top notch but I've so far only seen the original Japanese version. The package includes many more bonus features than Disney used to do with their Ghibli releases and it also has a booklet with additional information. If you're a fan of anime and especially Studio Ghibli, I highly recommend this Blu-ray.

A good transfer, as to be expected from GKIDS/Shout Factory. Vivid colors that don’t make you wish this were in 4K/HDR instead! Movie itself is okay. Not the best Ghibli, but far from the worst.

Not of the best Ghibli catalog titles, but a terrific one nonetheless. Like with all studio Ghibli productions, this movie has tons of charm, but a more serious tone with a surprise twist more in the adult category. Worth adding to your Ghibli collection though.
