New paint job on a 2000 Ford Focus
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this because I bought my original Garmin 53 in 2017. Both the old and the new have outdated maps. I was disappointed that the new 53 didn't have an updated map. When I needed to go 270N, the old 53 would have me turn right at 161W/270S and then cross over two lanes to get to 270N. This is DANGEROUS because, not only is the driver merging into traffic, but they would also need to cross two lanes in about 50 yards while other cars are traveling at 70+mph. When I use a different navigation system, it takes me on a different route that is safer. I do not like that system, so I decided to buy an "updated" newer model 53. After I bought the new 53, I checked for updates. The newer model has a the power button on the back instead of the top, the input functionality is fingers, the old one I could type with my fingernails. It takes a long time to bring the map and directions up after inputting an address or location. The attached map shows the route in pink, but the line is so thick that it does not show that I have drive down 270S and then try to get to 270. I missed getting onto 270N one time because the traffic already on 270S is going 70mph and there was no way, I could both merge AND cross two traffic lanes to get to 270N. The map with the black background is from the navigation software that I do not like.

Makes any destination an easy drive.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super piece of navigational equipment, a must have especially if you hate pulling over to read a map, or if your designated map reader can't really read one or is sleeping. You plug it in and it sets itself up. Then enter your destination & away you go. I love this Garmin, it has guided me to Door County, one wedding, and several garage sales. Makes any destination an easy drive.

Not the ideal GPS!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.NOT user friendly at all. Unlike my last GPS, it doesn't alert me to traffic ahead & offer re-route suggestions, in fact, when I hit the 'traffic' button, it tells me I don't have the right power cord in to detect traffic? I still haven't been able to find different routing modes (ie: my last GPS had shortest time, shortest distance, least use of freeways, mostly freeways, etc). It can't be used when not plugged in! Even when it is fully 'charged' (has been plugged in over an hour), as soon as it is unplugged, it turns off - it will not run on battery! I want my Magellan back!!!

Posted .In order to receive traffic on your Garmin Drive 53, you will need to pair it with a GTM 36 cable. Once you have that, a traffic event that will cause a delay of 5 minutes or greater can be detected during navigation. Only medium and severe traffic events will trigger an alert on the device.
Please get in touch with automotive support for further assistance or ways to purchase this cable.

Good Device overall
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had Garmin GPS units for a very long time and they just keep getting better. They aren't perfect but close enough to it to make it a five star. There is not much it can't find and with a quick update of maps and software it finds those new things that pop up. The only thing that is slightly annoying is the search method. It works great but it is multiple steps instead of just putting an address in the search bar. You have to first do the house/business number then you have to put in the street name then and then and finally you got it. It just seems a little bit counterintuitive. Other than that the suggestions for places such as restaurants and gas stations are spot on and makes life easier when you are away from your home area.

Garmin Drive 53 5" -- won't drive without it!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Terrific replacement for Garmin Nuvi, which lacks sufficient memory. Garmin Express made transfer of saved locations from old Nuvi to Drive 53 EASY! Alerts (speed change, school etc.) big help. Easy to add foreign language.

Good assist
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Garmin works well- but is not as "helpful" in making suggestions on longer, vacation travels, as my phone travel app. I have wanted something that is good around town, and this fits the bill. No need to mess with my phone, which is dangerous and now illegal in Michigan.

Great GPS, but missing one important feature...
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Garmin GPS seems to work correctly. I haven't had much of a chance to put it to use yet. The display is bright and easy to read. The voice is loud enough to hear over the radio (provided the radio is kept at a low volume). My only problem is that Garmin still refuses to have its GPS units use Bluetooth to transmit its voice directions like a cell phone does (muting the radio channel while the cell phone uses the radio). I don't know why Garmin refuses to implement this much needed feature. You could play the radio at whatever volume you like, and the GPS would mute the radio when needed. C'mon Garmin, do better.

GPS upgrade
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What I thought would only be a replacement GPS (broke the screen on an older model) turned out to be an upgrade. Even the power cord is longer! What I need now is a protective carrying case that has room for the cord and mounting bracket as well as the GPS.

Works great, as always.
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the same as my old one, only sleek and new. I actually love that the old, familiar format is, reliably, there. No learning curve, just plug and play. Works great.

Happy Traveller
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this to replace an old Tom-Tom that could no longer be updated. While I wanted to get a larger screen, the sale price for the unity I got was too good to pass up. The display is crisp and easily seen. It got us from Colorado to South Dakota with no trouble. Let's see how it does when we go to Canada this summer - if they'll let us in.

The Big Kahuna loves his new Garmin!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This unit is excellent - it performs exactly as billed. This is my second Garmin unit - my previous model was 12-14 years old. The advancements in the technology are amazing. I am very pleased with this updated version. I also like the option of mounting it on the windshield.
