Great for the $; Does what I need

The GARMIN nuvi 200 is a great GPS, especially on sale at $249.
I replaced my older StreetPilot i5 with this one. Although the nuvi 200 does not have 'text-to-speech', or an mp3 Player, or the ability to play audio books, this thing rocks at what it's supposed to do...BE A GPS!!!
Honestly, do you need to hear your GPS mis-pronounce every other street in your neighborhood? Do you really need to play mp3's out of the tiny little speakers of it? Do you really need to 'hear' War and Peace read to you while you drive to work? For me...no, no & no.
What it does do is provide you with fast accurate directions. It also recalculates even faster than my older i5. The touch screen is so much faster than the old dial and push on my i5. Also, it has a nifty 'trip computer' that shows: Current Speed, Fastest Speed, Ave. Moving Speed, Ave. Overall Speed, Time Stopped, Time Moving and Total Time.
This unit is a lot of fun to have in the car.
I drive all over the Mid-Atlantic for work and would NEVER part with mine!

An easy-to-use GPS

This is the first GPS I bought. I purchased it for my wife, who is terrible with directions and technology. I picked it because most reviews said it was easy to use, and they are right. My wife figured out how to use it on the first try. Besides being easy to use, the display quality is excellent, even in sunlight. Its recalculation when you change off the designated route is very quick and accurate.
My only complaint is the documentation. The "set up and go" that came with it (16 pages) explains the basic set up and use of the GPS, but leaves out things like how to connect the unit to your computer, how to load custom POI files, etc. I went to the Garmin website expecting to find a more detailed manual for the unit, but only found the same 16 page manual there. Through some navigation of the Garmin website, I figured out what I needed to do, but would be much easier to have a more detailed PDF manual available for download there.
Nevertheless, I'd still recommend this as an entry level GPS.

By far the best GPS on the market!

After several months of extensive research, I purchased the Nuvi 200 from BestBuy. I've owned the unit for several months now and just love it!
The accuracy is phenominal and it has great features. Although it doesn't tell you to turn on "Elm Street", it does tell you when to turn and displays the number of feet from the turn as you approach. My battery lasted almost the full 5 hours as advertised and I've never once lost signal travelling the entire Southeast. It is light, compact and easily fits into your shirt or pants pocket.
I signed onto the "MyGarmin" page and through their links, downloaded additional points of interest (Poi's) and vehicle icons.
If you're looking fo a very reliable unit with more features than you might expect, I highly recommend this unit

Very good, but no street names aloud

This GPS is great! I have the pink one that came out around Mother's Day '08. I didn't realize it didn't say the street names aloud, but that's not such a bad thing b/c I still find using it a breeze. I've had a few occasions in which the GPS took me to a wrong location then I freaked out b/c I hadn't been paying attention to my surroundings and had no clear where I was. Sometimes the GPS takes a long time to find a place I'm searching for that I have to turn it off, then back on. It is so easy to use and I use it all the time. To be able to look up the closest grocery store or find a place by name is so great! The ability to insert your camera memory card is cute (to view photos). Very neat idea to see the photos. I wish the GPS had the ability to do non-expressway routes during Chicago traffic (only allows shortest distance and quickest distance). Overall, I am so satisfied and love this GPS. We have two in our family.

Since I bought this from Best Buy on Black Friday, I've been very pleased with the product, especially the price. It is very easy to use, the windshield mount works great, and I love the compact size. I even used it in the house to look up a local restaurant my wife was trying to find ... faster than using the computer on-line. The only drawback (I believe this applies to all GPS units, regardless on manufacturer) is that the most current maps are still 1-2 years old. The 2008 Navteq edition of the Garmin maps were compiled in 2006 and will not reflect new/closed restaurants and roads that had occurred within that timeframe. I'm looking forward to using it for a long trip in a few weeks ... we'll use the POI to locate restaurants, gas stations, and motels (the phone # is listed so we can call while we are in the car and determine the rates/vacancy). For the features, price, and reputation of Garmin, the 200 is highly recommended.

I recently purchased this GPS for my trip from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to see the Phillies play the Pirates at PNC park. About 30 miles away from Pittsburgh we ran into some construction that closed down a major road we needed to travel on to get to the hotel. As we were getting directed off the highway we pressed the very handy "detour" button and the GPS selected a new route and got us right to the front door of the hotel. From the hotel we used the points of intrest button and used it to go get something to eat. From there it took us right to PNC park. After the game we used the points of interest again to get us to a bar and eventually back to the hotel. The GPS got us right home the next day no problems. This was probably the best investment I have ever made and will definitely use this on my next road trip! I love not having to worry about getting lost like I used to worry about when I printed directions.

Bought this for my dad for Christmas and we went out and test drove it together. I am hearing impaired and my dad had the setting on 80% for sound and I could clearly understand and hear the directions. It was nice that it gave distance to next turn well in advance and also when to turn with adequate time. My dad is absolutely thrilled with it. I think it is the best gift I ever gave him. It is nice that it has many points of interest with phone numbers on there. I am sorry it does not have blue tooth capability though so it could dial the number for a restaurant or whatever. Still an awesome product!!! We did try to go to someones home and it was further out than what the gps has for maps, but the maps it did have were all very accurate and if we passed our turn it would recalcuate and re route us.
Awesome product.

So after buying this I found that it had some cool features such as points of intrest. You can be anywhere and lets say you want to find a CD store you can search and it will find every CD store near by and then get you there. The bad thing is that a lot of stores have closed down and the Garmin will still send you there. Then you go on line to update the maps and you do a huge download to your computer and then try to put the download on the Garmin only to find out that the Garmin dosent have enough memory to do the update. Looks like your stuck spending more money buying a memory card. Not only that but the Garmin got me lost a couple of times. Lets just say that if you are out in the middle of no where the Garmin has issues. If you live in a city or a suburban area the Garmin is great though. I would recomend this item, just be careful sometimes it has issues.

I bought this navigator for friend, who is afraid of getting lost. She hardly ever ventured out anywhere, because of this fear. Now she is hardly ever home, she feels safe, like she will never get lost, and has the peace of mind like someone...almost like an angel is sitting in her passenger seat with her guiding her on every journey.....I am so glad I could give her this sense of peacefulness when driving, and the ability to venture out into the world. I recommend this navigator to anyone, it is easy to use, and light weight, and easy to attach to your window, and audibly easy to hear...so you do not have to tak your eyes off the road...

GREAT CHOICE!

Recently drove from NY to Tennessee, this thing is unbeleivable! Had a mapquest route printed and at first we were "unsure" of the accuracy of the GPS. Going through NJ after the GW bridge can be very confusing. So we decided to follow the printed mapquest. While the GPS was telling us (loudly) directions, they were different than the mapquest. Following mapquest messed us up totaly! Then we heard the saint of navigation (Garmin) telling us what to do to get back on track. It reconfigured itself within seconds and in minutes we were back on track! We followed it all the way to and from Tennessee. NO problems at all. It's ultra portable, easy to read, speech is clear and precise. Its easy to program with the onscreen buttons, make a different choice and in reconfigures itself. Cant ask for much more than that!

I was one of those people who bought an hd dvd players. Best buy felt so bad for us that they sent us a $50 gift card. I already purchased a ps3 so I was looking for a new toy. I found the nuvi 200 on sale for $169. I also had a 10% discount card. I purchased the unit plus 2 yr. warranty for $141 out of pocket. Took unit out of box plugged it in and mounted it in less than 5 mins. I put in the address of a resturant that we had never been to and it guided us right to the front door. This unit is a blast to use. If you make a turn and get off course it will put you back on course. I would recommend this unit to anyone who is sick of following map quest directions. I just keep thinking of all those places that I wanted to go to but was not sure of how to get there. This is going to be a fun summer!!

I bought this GPS during Black Friday last year, so I got a decent deal on it. However, almost a year later, it is still pretty pricey. I can say from working with other GPS systems, this is very easy to use and intuitive. Even if you don't want to use the GPS function, you can use it as a map, or just to find nearby things (gas station, food, post office, etc). The battery also lasts many hours so you don't need to always have it plugged in. It's saved me many times when I was in an unfamiliar area. However, it does NOT always give the BEST way to get there, and you'll notice that when you are in a familiar area. So, be careful with that-go with the way you know.

BEST Entry Level Unit - by FAR

The debate is almost always between the Garmin Nuvi 200 and TomTom One, 3rd Edition. Take it from someone who owns BOTH:
IF PRICE IS NOT AN OBJECT, BUY THE NUVI (TomTom often on sale for $50 less then Nuvi.) HERE ARE THE FACT-BASED REASONS WHY:
1) Nuvi menus SUPERIOR to TomTom - FAR, FAR, FAR more intuitive and easier to use!
2) Nuvi has a separate TRIP DETAIL screen that is SPECTACULAR.
3) Nuvi windshield mount SUPERIOR to TomTom. (Your TomTom WILL fall off your windshield; your TomTom WILL get scratched.)
4) Nuvi is THINNER than fatboy TomTom - easier to hold in your hand and program.
5) Nuvi is sentence case sensitive (it knows which words to capitalize, TomTom does not, forcing you to delete and re-enter any destination name with more than one word - a PAIN in the you-know-what.
The Nuvi is WELL WORTH the extra money over the TomTom

For $250.00, you just cant complain...you can spend $400.00+ on newer GPS systems and get the same quility as you would from this one...great touch screan, very simple to use, great directions, and my absolute favorite..AMAZING POIs!! Only thing that I've noticed about this GPS is when you first start it up, it may take 2-3 minutes to pick up signal...but once thats over, you're on your way...I would deffinitely recommand this to anyone looking to buy a good GPS and still save money.....who cares if it doesn't have MP3 or bluetooth, you act as if your going to us them!! They're just little whistles that greatly raise the prices!

Good entry level GPS

I am now on my 2nd GPS and so far this one is working out just fine. For 2 weeks now it has taken me to several addresses (house shopping) with no hange ups. I leave my unit on all the time but I have tested it to see how fast it would aquire signals and it does it with in seconds. Granted it has been good weather here so I cannot say how it will react in rainy/ snowy conditions. Every thing is simple to use so memorizing instructions is not needed. For a basic entry level unit to get you from point a to b you cannot go wrong with this one. The only thing I would like to see extra on the unit is the altitude to be displayed on the map screen (if you mark a location it will tell you then how high you are.) Also I would like to see more detailed information on satalite signal strength. Minor issues at best.

I first saw a GPS in use when I was travelling. I watched fascinated as the driver made his way from the airport to
my destination. My wife said I either had to buy another wireless broadband account which would be useless while driving or find some other way to get around, so, I found another way. The Nuvi 200 is a basic model. It isn't fancy, but it DOES work. It doesn't matter to me that it doesn't announce the street names. I'm not blind or I wouldn't be driving. The smaller version is just fine and easy to read, even for these tired old eyes. My only complaint is that it sometimes doesn't find the satellites, which requires a reboot, but so far this thing has been tough tough tough. And I can use it on foot, too. And the best part of all? It doesn't scream at me when I make a wrong turn! WHOOT!

the nuvi 200 was awesome. I can't install anything and my knowledge of GPS systems and installations was ZERO. I literally took it out of the box and turned it on. It worked right away It received a strong signal and started working right away.
If you miss the turn, it will say "recalculating route" and IMMEDIATELY does it!! I recently moved to a new house that just was built last year and it was in the system!! Also, I have satellite radio which already took up my cigarette lighter, so i bought a splitter at Best Buy for my lighter and now i can listen to my Sirius and watch the nagivation.
It can nagivate the Pittsburgh roads which are notoriously one of the hardest and most heavily constructed roads around.
I give it a great recommendation.

This is my first GPS purchase and after reading several reviews on Best buy and other websites, I decided that this is the one that I need. It does not have all the bells and whistles but it seems to be a solid unit to give to directions and find other basic locations like restaurant, gas stations, food etc. Comparing this with the TOM TOM ONE many people suggested the Garmin nuvi 200 had better maps and directional software. It does not have text to speech, but I care less about it as you can see the street name on the map while driving.
So far so good, haven't really used off road or in rural towns to see if it can find addresses quickly, but will keep updated on that whenever I experience it. Overall it is a good buy for the price and you wont regret a bit.
