    Vivosmart HR hits the mark

Replaced Garmin 225 as it was not accurately reading my HR. Gave Garmin a 2nd shot when I saw their new Vivosmart HR as I had been happy with my previous Vivofit which died. I liked how Garmin developed their own optical HRM versus licensing it from Mio. * Optical HRM, 5 stars * Continuous Heart Rate 5 stars * 5 ATM water resistant, 5 stars. Can't take the Fitbits in the shower. This is awesome * Display is pretty poor unfortunately. With my poor vision, it's even tougher to see. But I do appreciate that the screen does not go to sleep and always shows the time or whatever you prefer. I can't even come close to seeing the email alerts without glasses which defeats the purpose of having alerts on a wearable. 2 stars. * Bluetooth pairing and syncing, 5 stars. * Watch style band, great! 5 Stars * Activity Mode, running only. Nothing for other workouts. Not a huge deal since I just want aggregate data for my entire workout, which typically includes cardio and weights. I'm not just running. 3 stars. * $149 price point. 5 Stars. I just can't spend $200+ on a tracker since they change so frequently. $99 seems too cheap on the other hand. If I want to replace every 12-18 months, I can't spend much more. Overall, this deserves 4 stars. I'm happy to be able to workout without a chest strap, especially for travel as it's a pain to drag more gear and remember to pack it. Straps also get nasty and it's yet 1 more thing to clean and maintain.

It is great activity tracker, except that HR is not accurate. I liked the notifications to move, steps, phone/text notifications.

Great features in a great activity band. It's comfortable & durable as well. The steps feature was confusing at first because it didn't seem consistent, but I've really enjoyed staying active & fit because of my Vivofit!

Extra Features But Can't Do What It Should

The Vivosmart HR is the Fitbit Charge HR competitor. Here's the good parts: It does some things the Fitbit Charge HR can't and that was the reason I purchased it. The Vivosmart HR is waterproof - so you can swim with it on. It will allow you to see all notifications on its larger screen. You are also able to control your music from the fitness band as well. Finally, the "Move" reminder may be annoying but it is effective. Now for the bad: The heart rate monitor is wildly inaccurate and should not be trusted. This is a big deal since this is the primary way the Vivosmart HR calculates calories burned. An inaccurate heart rate count throws everything off track. It works best if you are running outdoors but any other fitness activity (think treadmill, bike, rower) it's a fifty-fifty chance if the Vivosmart HR will actually record the heart rate and thus calories burned correctly. What worse: Garmin support just sends emails with different trouble shooting tips and offers no real substantial help other than read this and try something from it. Sadly, even Best Buy is of no use once you get outside their 15 day window. They simply give you a phone number for Garmin and say "Good luck." Would I Buy again: Highly doubtful. The differentiating features are nice but they aren't worth the wildly inaccurate heart monitor and decidedly poor Garmin support. Recommendation: If you do decide to buy one make sure you buy the Geek Squad protection because I have a feeling your will be back at Best Buy within 20 days looking for a refund or exchange.

This tracker is much better than my previous Fitbit which broke just after a year and Fitbit would not do anything about it. Only complaint I have with this one is that is could have a brighter display, otherwise great.

Not fair to review this product when I've just begun using it. I am learning and so far is intuitive. Seems to be a lot of functions. Would prefer automatic synchronization with phone app. Love the size and appearance.

This is a fun activity tracker. I'm pretty sure it's good for telling you that you were more active than yesterday but I'm not so sure about its absolute accuracy. I don't think it's accurate at all in monitoring sleep

Mostly accurate with the heart rate but very slow to respond to rising or falling heart rate. Also Heart rate mostly reads lower than actual in the pool for some reason.

Hi Mac55, Thank you for your review. We wanted to reach out and offer some suggestions for getting the most accuracy heart rate from your vivosmart HR. Please use the following FAQ link for more information and recommendations for getting the most accuracy heart rate data: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/xQwjQjzUew4BF1GYcusE59. We also wanted to mention that we would not expect to get accurate heart rate data while the device is under water because the water could reflect light, and cause the unit to provide inaccurate data. While the vivosmart HR can be used safely in the water, it is not designed to provide heart rate data while swimming. Thank you again for your review. -JFH Garmin
