It keeps me motivated by telling me to "move" if I am idle too long. I like it's durability and it has gotten wet a few times but stands the test.

I am really torn on how I feel about this fitness band, On one hand I really like the app and the features that the device offers but on the other hand I miss the Fitbit community and the extra motivation they offer. The other con about this device is the vertical screen. It allows it to show a lot more information than a lot of other bands but I hate reading my notifications with my wrist twisted all funny. Overall I just have to give it a so-so rating.

I bought this garmin for my husband, because I love mine. We love how it gets text and reminder notifications via bluetooth, so we can leave our phone in purse or pocket and only get it out if necessary. It tracks mileage and steps pretty accurately.

So I had been a Fitbit guy and they failed me for numerous reasons. Next stop...Garmin Vivosmart HR. Good tracker, but often losses connection to phone. Heart rate is also sketchy. Without changing the location on my wrist when I run, HR monitor sometimes only goes up to about 80 and then it will miraculously increase to about 154 although I had been running for more than 45 minutes at the same pace. Not the best...but clearly not the worst. 3.5 stars.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear about the connection and heart rate troubles that you experienced with your vívosmart HR. There are a few troubleshooting suggestions that I'd like to provide that may fix these issues and prevent them from reoccurring.

With regard to the Bluetooth connection troubles:
      1. Please ensure that the Garmin Connect Mobile app is up to date. If "auto updates" are enabled on your phone, you may already be up to date. If not, you can check the Google Play Store or iTunes Store to see a list of app updates that are available, if any.
      2. Please ensure that your vívosmart HR has the latest firmware installed. We recommend using a computer to update the device via Garmin Express (http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html).
      3. Please ensure that you're following the pairing instructions as listed below. (Please note: Your vívosmart HR will not function properly if paired directly through the Bluetooth settings on your phone. It must be paired within the Garmin Connect Mobile app.)

      Pairing Instructions: http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={a84ed9c0-92f9-11e5-4cfe-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

Once your vívosmart HR and the Garmin Connect Mobile app are updated and the devices are paired, they should sync properly. The optical heart rate sensor on the vívosmart HR uses light to penetrate the skin and estimate your heart rate. To ensure that you’re getting the best heart rate accuracy, please follow these guidelines:

      - Ensure that your wrist is clean and dry.
      - Ensure that the watch is snug fit.
      - Wear the watch on the outside of your wrist, away from your wrist bone.
      - Avoid wearing the watch over dark tattoos.
      - Ensure the green lights on the watch are functioning.

Keeping the device software up to date is important as well, as updates are released periodically to improve the watch’s functionality. Software updates can be done through Garmin Express, which can be downloaded here: j.mp/GRMNXP.

If you continue to experience issues, Garmin Customer Care would be happy to offer additional troubleshooting assistance and can be reached using the contact information listed on our Support page (http://www.garmin.com/us/support/).

Again, thank you so much for your review. (KS) Garmin

This is a wonderful product. I didn't really need it for the activity tracking but I wanted it for the emails, phone listings, and control of my music app. It works beautifully. This is actually my second one. I purchased it for my son.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. The expected battery life on the vívosmart HR is up to 5 days. This can be impacted by the amount of notifications received, backlight settings, and how the vívosmart HR is used. If you have additional questions, please contact Garmin Customer Care via http://www.garmin.com/support for assistance. Best regards. (KS) Garmin

I love my Garmin! It works great and has exactly what I need on it. Only one thing I wish it was a bit more efficient at is SYNCING with my phone. It's just a bit slow at it sometimes. That's the only thing I would make better on it. Great product!

This is my 3rd Garmin device (have a forerunner and a Vivosmart1). Experienced with other fitness trackers from my wife (fuelband, fitbit, up, etc.). I bought this device as an upgrade from the Vivosmart1 in order to get the HR sensor. In general. The upgrades and polish to the activity tracking is good, but the form of the device is lacking. Durability. Neither my wife nor I have noticed any durability issues with Garmin devices. Nike Fuelband, broke; Jawbone Up, broke, broke, broke got a refunded; Fitbit Charge, broke, refund b/c skin reaction. I believe these Garmin devices are just made better. Perhaps b/c they are intended for a higher degree of activity. Not as burly/indestructible as my Suunto or G-Shock devices, but still pretty dang good, hence why I have owned several. In general brand-loyalty is for suckers, but as long they continue to deliver good products at designated price-points I will continue to patronize them. Aesthetics. The device itself seems to have regressed several years in regards to the aesthetics. The band feels cheep (like a hospital bracelet) and the sensor unit is bulky and fits askew on the wrist. Granted, i prefer a loose watch, but even when buckled down so the HR sensory makes correct contact, i have to angle my wrist just right to see the display correctly. Difficult to wear long sleeved shirts with the device b/c the bulk. Vivosmart1 was small and so easy to wear you didn't really notice it was there. I'm usually not one to complain about whether something is ugly or not, but since I will be wearing this 24/7 except during training (when I will be wearing my forerunner), it needs to be minimal, unobtrusive or at least unremarkable. First thing wife said when she saw me wearing was: "Whoa! That thing is huge... and ugly." Battery. Battery life is a small issue, but you would think it would be better, not worse than the Vivosmart1. I know it says it lasts 5 days, and that is fine, but the Vivosmart1's 7 day battery allowed me to have a consistent routine of unstrapping it on Sunday morning to charge it. As a creature of habit (which i think many people who use these devices are), worrying about the battery life makes me somewhat anxious about whether or not it will give up the ghost in the middle of the day. Waterproofing. the waterproofing is a good feature (present in the vivosmart 1 as well); however, when wet, the screen receives feedback in odd ways. With the vivosmart 1 you had to double tap the display to wake it up and interact with it. With vivosmart hr it is always active and thus prone to do odd things if you are in the shower or something (accidental turned on my music this morning). Display. Some people thought the display on the vivosmart1 was difficult to read (said it was cloudy or something like that). I never had noticed trouble reading it event though I am both significantly near-sighted and have an astigmatism. Vivosmart HR is almost impossible to read indoors with low to moderate light. Don't get me wrong, it reads okay in bright daylight, but indoors it can be difficult to read unless the angle of the light and wrist are correct. In summary, the activity tracking and software is just fantastic, but the device presentation has regressed. They should have kept the Vivosmart1's form and added HR. This thing is like a mix of the Vivosmart1 + Vivofit + HR feature = Big Compromise. I love the garmin connect app, and plan on upgrading my Forerunner to a 630 this Christmas, but am already hoping they announce a new Vivosmart that goes back to the smaller form. Positives. I continue to live and die by the silent alarm. It wakes me up to every day without bothering my wife (i exercise mornings while she does evenings). Connect app is fun and integrates well with MyFitnessPal. Sensors appear accurate and relevant.

Thank you for the detailed review and the feedback on the vivosmart HR.
It is great to hear that you are happy with our software and applications.
I would like to address some of the other concerns brought up in your review.
While the aesthetics of any device are always somewhat subjective, we do appreciate your opinion on this.
Integrating the wrist-based heart rate monitor into the device makes it taller and requires a slightly larger form factor from the original vivosmart. The size is very similar to the vivofit line of devices. The screen is also a different size such that is a little shorter but 3 times wider.
The device’s backlight can be set to come on when you look at the screen of the device. This is based on the motion of your wrist. You can set in the Garmin Connect Mobile app under Device Settings. Enabling this will decrease battery life.
If a device’s touch screen is activated without being touched, in the water or out, please contact Garmin Fitness Support directly. Support will be happy to continue the conversation, or address any further issues.

I am pleased with my Vito Smart HR. It challenges me to get moving & I can monitor my heart rate to see that I don't over do it. I am nearly 80 years old and get between 8000 and 18000 thousand steps a day. I highly recommend it for anyone of any age.

Has a lot of options that can be set and used, the battery life is a little short if the heart rate part is turned on all the time, but you can turn that off and only turn it on when needed, then the battery last for about 8 days before charging.
