    Nice Features, Accurate Heart Rate

I've had this device for a few days now. I wear it 24/7 mainly to track heart rate and calorie burn. I am not a serious athlete -- just an every-other-day serious workout with light ones in between. I want to ward off the cardiologist and tracking heart rate is key for me. Too many false alarms already! The main issue with accuracy and battery life was the device software. It took some patience and study to update it, though it's easy when you know how. First, you must update the software by synchronizing the device with Garmin Express. Then -- and this is the part I almost missed -- you must install the update through the menu system on the device itself. Contact Garmin support if you can't figure it out. Once I did that and successfully updated to v. 2.90, the battery life was longer and the heart rate was consistently accurate. Monitoring heart rate 24/7 drains the battery, as does the backlight, bluetooth, notifications, etc. I turn all those off except for the 24/7 heart rate. The second point is do not use the broadcast function unless there's a device to broadcast to. The battery will die quickly. Use the run button to time workouts and save the data. This is much nicer than the chest strap, it must be snug but not tight, and it's comfortable. The device isn't really intuitive, but once you get used to it it's nice and more accurate than some competitor devices.

Thank you for your detailed review!

As you had mentioned, we recommend keeping the software up to date on the vívosmart HR to ensure optimal performance. This can be done using Garmin Express (http://garmin.com/express) or via Bluetooth using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. If updating through Garmin Connect Mobile, the vívosmart HR will download the update after a successful upload of an activity showing the device is at an older software version.

The accuracy of the vívosmart HR's optical heart rate monitor can be improved using the steps outlined in the following FAQ article:  http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={1ae59670-f437-11e4-dfa6-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

The broadcast feature is designed to broadcast the heart rate recorded by the vívosmart HR to a compatible Garmin device, such as an Edge or VIRB. While broadcasting, battery life will be decreased.

The complete owner's manual is available here: http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/vivosmarthr/EN-US/GUID-AC37C9F7-25D0-4CC3-A1B5-9F466C152957-homepage.html

    Best unit so far

I can swim with this unit to 80ft, it keeps track of almost everything. My heart rate, my sleep, my calories burned, the outside temperature, the stairs climbed, time and date, and my only wish is that it tracked my swimming, and that it did not have to be charged every 2 1/2 days. My wife's unit was defective on purchase, but Best Buy traded it without question.

Thank you for the feedback you have provided. We are happy to hear you've had a good experience. We understand you are charging the device every 2 1/2 days, the battery life should last up to 5 days. However the amount of smart notifications can affect the battery life. Head on over to our ideas portal to let our innovative experts know about the swimming feature: www.garmin.com/ideas. Best regards. ~QKO Garmin

At first glance it seems like it has a lot of neat features but I wore it as a sleep tracker and it was not very accurate, and when I woke up my wrist was bruised and swollen. To be fair I have very tiny wrists so if you are not as sensitive and small like I am, it might not be a problem.

Thanks for the vívosmart HR review. This device will use the automatic sleep detection feature of Garmin Connect to determine your sleep and wake times. The following FAQ provides some information for how the Automatic Sleep Detection of Garmin Connect is designed to work: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/iVQQHzafJ70kRgl2voTd6A.
If the sleep times reported are not correct, users have the option to manual enter their sleep times for that day. It is not typical for the vívosmart HR to cause discomfort when worn. We would recommend reaching out to Garmin Customer care immediately. The Product Support teams will want to work with you to investigate this further with you. Phone and email contact information can be found at www.garmin.com/support. Thank you again for the feedback. -JFH Garmin

I love the features would have liked to use it for more than 2 weeks though. Back lighting flashes like a strobe light now :( I can't find my receipt so I may be stuck with it. I had the original vivosmart which was wonderful so am disappointed that this one is already having issues.
