Handy tracker, but reliability in question

I purchased two UP3 , but had to return them because they would not synch with my Samsung S6 phones despite several calls to customer care. In place, I purchased the Vivosmart HR. These are my thoughts: PROS: -Very comfortable -Water proof -Screen on the band. I didn't think I needed a screen on my tracker, but I am happy to have this features. I don't always want to use my phone to see what my steps are, or heart rate is doing. It works well - time clearly visible, swipe side to side to get to other screens such as steps, calories burned, stairs climbed and so on -Steps seem to be accurate -Heart rate seems to be accurate - Easy to pair with phone, stays synched throughout the day - battery indeeds lasts about 5 days CONS: - stairs NOT accurate. I go up /down my 18 steps at home twice before I go to work, yet still states I did zero stairs. -Ap not very useful. All the numbers are there, but that's it. Hopefully Garmin can improve the ap secysystem o that it gives helpful advice , tips like the Jawbone ap -Less tan 2 weeks into use, my wife's device no longer works. Band's screen freezes, unable to swipe screen to see steps, heart rate, and so on; soft reset solves the problem for 5 minutes ,then it's back to being frozen. My own band works fine so far. Overall I am happy with the purchase, though my wife's band did stop working yesterday. Will contact Garmin this evening and see how customer support is, and give an update at that time.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I’m sorry to hear about the heart rate inaccuracies that you experienced with your vívosmart HR. I would like to offer some suggestions that may improve the accuracy of the vívosmart HR’s optical heart rate sensor.

The optical heart rate sensor on the vívosmart HR uses light to penetrate the skin and estimate your heart rate. To ensure that you’re getting the best heart rate accuracy, please follow these guidelines:

      - Ensure that your wrist is clean and dry.
      - Ensure that the watch is snug fit.
      - Wear the watch on the outside of your wrist, away from your wrist bone.
      - Avoid wearing the watch over dark tattoos.
      - Ensure the green lights on the watch are functioning.

Keeping the device software up to date is important as well, as updates are released periodically to improve the watch’s functionality. Software updates can be done through Garmin Express, which can be downloaded here: j.mp/GRMNXP.
Should accuracy issues persist, Garmin Customer Care would be happy to offer additional troubleshooting and assistance. Please visit j.mp/GRMNSupport for our contact information and hours of operation.

Again, thank you so much for your review. (KS) Garmin

Some nice features but hard to know if it is accurate. Example. Show I climbed stairs 17 one day when I didn't climb any. Makes you wonder about the accuracy of other features. Best feature is mental in that it makes me conscious of being active.

The heart rate is way off, sleep monitor is real bad, The only reason I still have it is the movement bar, It's gets me out of my chair at work. But I may take it back and get a Fitbit again at least they work! Don't last but work better than this!

Bought it to track heart rate, steps etc. Battery doesn't last very long (6-8 hours) . I'm not an expert but heart rate doesn't seem accurate either. It fluctuates wildly. I would have expecked the charge to last for at least a day.

It's ok, but needs software upgrades

So far the device is ok. Unfortunately I may have a defective one as the screen has circular blotches when the backlight is on, not the biggest deal in the world but noted. HR accuracy is so so. As a weightlifter and someone with darker skin the VHR does not do the best job of tracking my HR. This is where I really wish Garmin would allow you to connect to an external HR strap. Garmin makes products for people that are supposed to be serious about their training so I wish they would allow this. Due to the inability of the vHR to pick up a reliable & consistent HR, I have started importing my workouts into Connect from my Wahoo chest strap:-( Wish I didn't have to resort to that. The app on IOS is pretty good, a little convoluted but I like the extensive data. The sleep tracking could use an upgrade. If you charge the device during your "sleep hours" the device says your sleeping. Why can't the device realize it's being charged and just because it's still, the user is not sleeping. Also wish there was away to manually enter sleep mode. Would help nightly tracking and also allow the user to track a nap. I travel a lot and would love to go into nap mode on a flight. Lack of using iPhone's GPS is baffling. Why can't the vHR use your phone's GPS to track runs or bike rides. Again Garmin athletes are buying your products. Please change your stance on this. Auto Goal are nice for steps. Would also be nice to have an Active Calorie Goal for the day. Steps aren't the end all goal of true fitness. Notifications are handled quite well. Despite the shortcomings I still enjoy the device.

I bought this for the heart rate monitor. It rarely came close to registering my correct heartbeat. When resting I was seeing a rate in the 140's. When exercising the rate jumped all over the place. I did return the unit.

I have owned numerous trackers and smartwatches over the past year and always seem to return them because they are missing something. This one comes the closest to fitting what I want in a device and although there a few bugs between it and their Garmin Connect app I have confidence Garmin will fix. They fixed it on the Vivoactive and original Vivosmart. Pros: Heart rate is spot on during exercise and normal activity. I compared this to a Garmin chest strap and a Mio Fuse and they match with a couple of BPM. I love that the display is always on and if you orient it in vertical mode it makes it much easier to see and more comfortable to view this way. The vibration 'Move' alert is a great motivator if you have been inactive too long. Garmin is getting more social aspects to their application where you can join groups, create groups and check progress or compete against others. Cons: Device is still in its infancy and has some bugs to work out, which Garmin always seems to fix. Garmin Connect doesn't always agree with what is displayed on the device, mostly in terms of steps climbed. My device usual shows one more floor than the software shows. Sleep tracking is not refined quite yet, it shows me still sleeping when I have been up for a half hour Having owned a Gear S2 and Moto 360 this device is so much better for activity and exercise tracking. Having tried a Polar M400, Garmin Vivoactive this device wins because of the bulitin heart rate monitor and its footprint on my wrist is much smaller than the rest.

      Thank you for your review.

We would love the opportunity to investigate the discrepancy in floors climbed, as it is not an issue that has been reported to us. Please contact our customer care team via http://www.garmin.com/support for assistance with this.

At the time this reply is being written, we have had reports of automatic sleep detection discrepancies. We are currently investigating to find the root cause of this and implement a resolution. Please ensure the software on your vívosmart HR stays up to date for optimal performance.

I haven't had any of the negative experiences mentioned by some of the other reviewers. My experience has been great! Logs everything, sync works perfect, comfortable, easy to use and great online and iOS app. I think the folks who had bad experiences didn't read the directions or got it before the latest update. Buy this one - it has the most features in this price range, looks good, has long lasting battery and doesn't cause skin rashes. Great fitness tracker!

    BEST Tracker EVER

I have tried both Fitbit and Vivofit of Garmin. I choose this Vivosmart tracker. It does everything. I can monitor my heart rate when I spin, save it in my history. Get emails and texts and tweets. It is very intuitive. I charge it once every 4 days. I choose this based on reviews. Thank you all for your reviews. I purchase according to shopper experience. I purchased from Best Buy on line because Amazon was out. Fitbit had the sale day after Thanksgiving. I found Fitbit to be average. Heart monitor was not accurate. I had to charge it every other day. I get average exercise. I am not an athlete. I choose this tracker to keep me accountable and moving. I spin 2 times a week and walk 3 days. I have an active job working with children. Garmin got it right. Do not hesitate to buy this tracker.

This knocks Fitbit out of the game!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My husband and I have both had various Fitbit's for the past several years. Since Dec, they did a software update which made it so the device had to be charged everyday, even with most features turned off. We got sick of this! So, I did research and decided to try the Vivosmart HR. The price can not be beat for all the features you get, absolutely incredible value. This thing has so much to offer between the PC app, Smartphone app, and the device settings themselves. It has smart alarms, HR monitoring, step counting, notifications from email-phone calls-apps-facebook-messaging (plus many more!), and best of all the battery LASTS a long time. I have now had mine for 2 1/2 weeks and have not had to charge it yet besides the initial startup. I love the design and big, wide face. I love the clock & date are always visible, you can tell right on the front of the device if you have an alarm set, you can set sleep times so it "detects" when you go to sleep, has a find my phone feature, you can set syncing right from the device, you can check the battery status right on the device, you can also do any necessary updates right from the device. I absolutely love this thing, it rocks and I wish I would have found this way sooner instead of dealing with Fitbit's excuses time and time again. The Garmin Vivosmart HR is the perfect tracking device for those who love many options and want to track their fitness. It is also great for silent alarms!!
