    Very Loud on Spin Cycle

    Posted
    regrlk2018

I wanted to write this review so others would be warned about the problems that I had with this washer. I bought this washer back in May due to the features and price and the fact that I still like top loader washers. The first thing that I noticed when I used it was that it was the vibration noise that the machine had on the spin cycle. I tried balancing the load, washing smaller loads, and removing everything from the washer...but it still vibrated. The washer itself worked very well outside of the vibrating but the vibrating was so strong and loud that it shook the walls and doors inside my washroom. I live on the second floor of an apartment complex so I could not deal with that due to my neighbors above and below me. Best buy was nice enough to send their installation technicians back out to my apartment to make sure that everything was installed on stable ground and to check the cabling and hoses out...but everything appeared good to them. The problem got even more disappointing when I called GE to set up an appointment to have them send a technician out to repair and look at the washer. I was able to make an appointment after speaking with GE customer service and they were able to order parts and they planned on shipping those parts directly to my house so that the technician could use those parts during the appointment. GE ended up shipping me some vibration pads and 4 rod and springs that needed to be installed. GE uses a third party vendor that they order their parts to and it ended up taking those parts over 2 weeks to get here. The technician showed up for the appointment the first time without the parts even being delivered yet. He ended up hooking up his laptop to my washer to run a software update that ended up not working at all. I had to then go back and reschedule another appointment with GE customer service for the following week. The same technician shows up at my apartment the next time and he was able to install the vibration pads but we could not move the washing machine back up against the wall because the pads do not screw into the legs of the machine. The washer would fall right off the pads every time we pushed it back against the wall. Oh....and by the way....the pads did not help at all with the vibrating. The vibrating of this machine mainly comes from the top of the machine so raising the machine 2 inches is not going to do anything. The technician then looked at the Rod and Springs and said "it will take me 4 hours to install those and those rod and springs are older than the ones that you already have on the machine so it would be a waste of time for me to install them". I was very surprised and irritated by this time and I told the technician that I wouldn't be using GE products again. Best Buy was nice enough to work with me with in getting another washing machine delivered and returning the old one because I had bought the 3 year Geek Squad protection plan. The entire process of messing around with GE took over 3 weeks and my 15 day return policy had already expired. My recommendation to anyone is to not buy this machine because the vibrating is very bad. You can google information about it and it seems to be a known problem. Everyone at GE seems to think that the problem is normal. I ended up buying a Samsung and the Samsung is super quiet on the spin cycle and I can do laundry in the middle of the night.

Exactly 1 year and 1 month from the day I purchased this washer, it has now failed. The lid lock mechanism no longer operates and as such, the washer will not run at all. It even failed during filling of the machine, so it was stuck with a load of dirty clothes and water. I ended up finding the service manual (which is how I was able to read the failure code for the lid lock the machine was putting out) and was able to run the diagnostic test for the drain pump, so at least I managed to get much of the water out. With a 1 year warranty, the failure of the part sure was timed perfectly As for when it was running, it has the same limitations of every washer you can now purchase new: does not use enough water to get the clothes clean - even with "Deep Fill". This is a case of an appliance being regulated out of functionality. Same goes for dishwashers. The government limitations on the amount of water that can be used is so restrictive that it is insufficient to get my clothes clean. I will not buy a new washer again. Or a new dishwasher, either, as they have the same problem. Extending the wash cycle is the manufacturers' only possible remedy to the problem, but it only goes so far. To me it seems a little ridiculous that in order to save a little water, an excessive amount of electricity has to be used. One other thing about the washer that struck me as odd was that when I put it on Drain & Spin, the washer started filling before it drained and spun. I expected it to just start draining and then spin dry. It does have a nice, large, stainless steel tub and is fairly quiet and the "Towels and Sheets" setting with the extended "Deep Fill" (hold down the "Deep Fill" button for 3 seconds to set extended Deep Fill) will fill it up more than any other cycle, but still not enough. At least for draining, it has a "2nd Rinse" option under the rinsing's Deep Fill setting. (The rinsing "Deep Fill" is required if you use fabric softener. I guess there is not enough water during a rinse cycle even to distribute the liquid fabric sotftener adequately.) I wish I had just gotten my previous washer repaired instead. Now I have to fork out some more money to fix a washer I don't think does the job very well.

H.E.: a joke right??? My lovable Kenmore of 20 yrs finally bit the dust. There are absolutely NO good options out there now, IMHO. I finally settled on this one 'cuz I foolishly thought I'd have some good options/control over it. NOT!!! I had thought I'd figured out how to get an extra fill, with the Deep Fill feature, (by trial & error). Well, I get the extra fill, it washes a very few minutes & then IMMEDIATELY DRAINS ALL THE WATER OUT!!! I've tried doing it different ways; I think it only worked once or twice, but today I again "lost" all the water for the FIFTH time out of 7-8 attempts over the last couple months. Talk about WASTE!!! That's a lot of detergent down the drain, literally, that it is costing me! Sorry but I DO NOT like washing my clothes in a huge washer drum that only half fills with water!!! Some link I tried thru this site told of how to do the extra "Deep Fills", but it sure did not work that way for me. When the water starts draining, there is absolutely NOTHING I can do to stop it!!! The stop button does nothing; moving it to another cycle does nothing; even UNPLUGGING the darn thing didn't do anything! When I plugged it back in, it just continued to drain! I know I am not the only one! I've read many reviews & talked to many people blasting these darn HE machines. This is not brand specific: it is across the board as far as I'm concerned. I know there are many that "love" their machines & that is fine; this is just my personal experience & preference!

This is an HE washer; however it offers the best of the old & new styles: WATER: YOU control the water level by selecting the proper load size. Once the machine is filled you can press the Deep Fill button for more water if necessary. I have found that I get the water I need by selecting the proper load size AND pressing the Deep Fill button once. Press the Deep Fill twice to fill to maximum level. PRECISE FILL: Using this setting allows the washer to act as all the other High Efficiency machines, which means hardly any water. I don't use this setting. Remember also, this machine is probably much larger than your old machine, and the tub is very deep. So don't expect water to be near the top like before. As long as the clothes are covered in water and sloshing around, they will get clean, just like before. NOISE: OK let's discuss the elephant in the room. Is this machine very noisy? NO! Does it make noise? YES! The noises it makes are different than those made by my old machine, but they aren't louder. Once you get used to the different sounds, it really isn't any different than before. MACHINE SHAKE: the newer machines spin much faster than the old ones, so yes, they shimmy a little bit. My machine does NOT move, just vibrates more than the older models. AND the faster spin cycle means your clothes are much dryer and drying time is shorter. WATER FILLING AGAIN AFTER OPENING THE MACHINE MID-CYCLE: If you open the machine while it is washing, it will add a little water when you close the lid. Not a lot of water, not even a glass-full. I am very pleased with this GE washer. It does everything I look for in a well-equipped washer.

This machine is loud. Five months after I bought it, one night, it just turned on, starting spinning by itself and i was awakened by the noise, and i unplugged it right away. I called GE directly, and the tech reset it. After four months again, I got another problem again, and I just kept on unplugging it a lot of times, and just rotating the controls, and one day, i was able to fix it. It's 14 months old, i called Bestbuy Geek Squad, I bought 3 year warranty with them, the machine is not filling in the correct water level, fills the drum on 10% level regardless of small, medium large, and deep fill level. i called Geek Squad, the technician said he replaced all the parts, but it is still doing the same thing. Would you believe he told me that it is water saver, so it does not fill more than that 10% level, and that was the normal level, maybe he never used a washer at all in his lifetime. So what will I do now, I got a warranty, but Best Buy could not even fix it. I want my money back or give me another model. I will call Best Buy again, I hope GE or Best Buy is reading this review. i bought a brand new machine so i don't have any problems, it's only been 14 months, and i had so many bad experiences with this washer. This machine is a 2017 model, it should be high tech, not a stone age model washer, I shouldn't be manually pouring water into the drum using the bucket. How can i wash , there is not enough water, to rinse out the detergent from the clothes. This is really ridiculous.

    Great So Far

I read a lot of washing machine reveiews about different washing machine brands and models including reviews about this one the GE model GTW460ASJWW. What I considered most was what appliance repair men had to say about front loaders, top loaders without the traditional agitator post, and the HE top loaders "WITH" the agitator. In nearly every review the top loader washer with the tried and true traditional old school agitator faired best. Many reviews about this washer said it was loud. I don't doubt their word however ours is super quiet. Quieter than any washing machine I've heard which makes me wonder if the folks at GE got the message and did something about it. Ours doesn't vibrate that much in the spin cycle or walk all over the place. The reviewers that said theirs walked makes me wonder if their machines were properly leveled. One thing in our favor was that the two young men that delivered and installed ours were efficient and made sure ours were properly leveled. I also talked to a representative of an appliance repair company that told me not having a machine properly leveled and overloading it were some the most common causes of needed repair. Admittedly we've only had it two days and washed and dried only 3 loads. So it's "Great So Far!" and so nice and quiet. Note: We are going to be sure to cover all the bases and buy the five year extended warranty. In six months or so I'll try to give an update to this initial review.

I bought this washer after reading many reviews. Washer had gone out several days previous, so desperately needed to make a good choice. Wanted one that would have a longer life, would clean clothes better, and spin water out better than previous washer. I wasn't sure how the middle spindle would limit the amount of laundry the tub would hold, or how it would affect the cleaning ability, or if it would impact the spinning out of the water. However, even with the spindle, the tub has a large capacity for heavily soiled laundry. (I would have needed a larger dryer, except that this washer spins out the water so well, my dryer still dries the load in less time.) This washer cleans significantly dirty clothes very well! I like that the tub holds more laundry, the options selectors are stationary (once the selection has been made, they don't rotate around the dial), you can choose water temperature, water depth, soil levels, multiple types of rinse (from extreme water-saving spritz to deep-water rinse for fabric softeners), more than one rinse-and-spin cycle, and the fabric softener dispenser. The chimes are quiet and not an issue. I do have one concern that remains, and it has been mentioned in other reviews. Even with being properly leveled and sitting on a concrete floor, the washer visibly vibrates when spinning the water out. (It is noisy at this point, also, but not unreasonably so.) I'm concerned it may affect the longevity of the machine. If it lasts 5 years, it will be one of the best purchases made in a long time. So far, it has done an awesome job!

    Very Annoying, bad design

    Annoyed

There are several things about this machine that are super annoying. I wonder if the person who designed it ever actually washed a load of laundry. First there is the locking lid. When a cycle is over you seriously have to wait for two or three full minutes before you can open the lid. There should be an "unlock" button so the user can get to their clothes. The first machine they sent us actually got stuck in the lock position with our very first load. Our wet clothes were trapped inside for two days. They had to replace the washer. Another aggravating thing is that God forbid you have a load that is too damp and needs to be spun dry because you cannot just hit a spin button. There is a cycle called "drain and spin" allegedly for this purpose but it FILLS THE LOAD WITH WATER!!! Why in the world does it do that??? It's too damp, I don't want MORE water in there! And...AND it takes almost 25 minutes to get through. This is a case of too fancy for its own good. It lights up, it plays a little tune but it has no common sense. If I could go back in time and just fix my old machine vs. buying this new one I would do it in a heartbeat. On my old machine I had complete control. With this one you're stuck running an entire new cycle because you can't just pick a spot in the cycle you want to go to. It's madness!!!

This washer has fit our needs perfectly! I have not had an energy efficient washer before (always had hand-me-downs), so I did a LOT of research and got several opinions before buying this washer. To be honest, the negative reviews on this washer were swaying me away from it, but after doing the research I'm very glad to have made the decision to go with this one! Pros - it cleans great, the time to complete a load is relatively quick, and it has SEVERAL different washing options for literally any kind of load you could have. Cons - If you're used to a quiet washer, this one is a bit loud (though "loud" is such a relative term). We have never had a "quiet" washer though, so this one wasn't any different for us and doesn't bother us at all. It does vibrate during the spin cycle, but I haven't had a problem with it moving or shifting like the other reviews state. I think that all just depends on how you load it and it becoming unbalanced. As long as you load it evenly, you should be fine! Please note that my 5 star rating is ONLY based on the washer. If I had the option to rate the delivery service it would be 1 star. They ended up being 3 hours LATER than the end of their time window (said 12-4 p.m... they showed up at 7:00) and were awful at communication - the drivers, not Best Buy. Thankfully Best Buy would keep us as updated as they could - but they had trouble getting a hold of the drivers a couple times. All in all, GREAT washer, but maybe consider picking it up yourself if you have the option.

We returned our brand new Whirlpool for this GE washer. Two months later, we can't tell you how happy we are to have made the switch... The Whirlpool constantly got out of balance (at least half of our washes). We've never had this problem with this GE. The Whirlpool wouldn't let you add clothes to the wash while it was filling. The GE only locks the lid once it's done filling, making it easy to add clothes. Plus, this GE only takes about 35 minutes to wash a large load (compared to 1-hour+ for most of the Samsung and LG washers). This GE washer also gives you complete control of how you want your wash done -- water levels, wash settings, etc. Or, you can let it choose stuff automatically. Finally, the GE's control panel is super easy to understand and change settings (unlike a lot of other washers). Both my wife and I are hugely relieved we found this washer after being frustrated by all the limitations of the Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool washers.

it's loud, yes, but how well would a quiet washer clean clothing? It isn't any louder than my 20 year old washer that it replaced, it's just different noises. The tub is huge, the spin cycle is uber-efficient, which is a huge plus for me since I hang dry most things. The bad reviews seem to be a matter of not reading the manual, expecting it to be silent because it's new and not understanding the concept of HE using less water. My old machine used over 90 gallons of water to do a super size load and a second rinse. I live in CA, I can't keep using that much water. My sister has a front load HE and she hates it, so I opted for a conventional top load. I didn't even know that this had an HE rating. The rinse cycle isn't the old fashioned fill the tub and slosh your clothes in dirty, soapy water, it spins at a slower speed while it squirts water into the clothing and the water spins through and out of the clothing carrying the soap and dirt with it.

This machine is wonderful! I highly recomnend it to anyone that wants some control over their own laundry process. I labored over this purchase for quite some time and read hundreds of online product reviews before making my decision. My previous machine, a well known brand, lasted only three years and was completely automated. I battled with the locking mechanism every time I washed clothes. It locked upon start and I had no idea what was going on in that tub. I could only hope the clothes were clean when it stopped. However, this new GE machine allows me to select my preferred water level, open the lid as it is filling and add more clothes, whitners, etc. It does lock eventually but not immediately. The tub is large enough for towels and bedding. The agitator is taking a little getting used to but I believe the clothes are cleaner. I am enjoying it so much I'm tempted to buy another one as a back-up plan just in case they discontinue this one. I dont want to be without it - ever! If you want to do laundry your way, this is the machine for you! Buy it!

It's practically impossible to find an older-style top-loading agitating tub washer anymore, but this model is about as close as you can get. It has an actual load size knob (far left) in addition to the now-standard "auto-size" functionality in most newer washers. The water comes in from the top, so you don't have to stack clothes like a brickmason to get it to work, like many new top-loaders where the water comes in from the bottom. So far it's done a great job washing clothes, towels, and sheets, and I didn't personally find it to be all that loud - it's probably louder than a front-loader, but it's no louder than the old-style top-loader I had before. It occasionally gets unbalanced and vibrates when spinning, but I think this is an issue with any of the newer top-loading HE machines that spin very fast. Best Buy delivery was also good - they made sure the water hoses weren't leaking etc., before they left.

Overall, I am pleased with the purchased made. The main reason that we choose a top load washer was because the previous washer that we had which was Frigidaire Affinity front load washer, had a malfunction with the door sensor and had to be restarted many times the sensor would cost about 200 dollars. So, my wife and I decided to get a washer that’s not front load washer, because of the maintenance and the bad smell it leaves if you leave the doors closed. My in-laws have a Samsung front load and they have a similar issue, so we opted out of front load washers and got this type of washer. I’ve read some of the reviews for this washer and saw that it sounds like a duck when its being used, it does sound like a duck but since the washer is on the garage we can’t hear anything. The clothes come out clean and almost dry, once the clothes are placed on the dryer it will be done in less than 20 minutes depending on the type of fabric. Easy to manage and the price is great. I recommend to get the warranty just in case anything happens.

I was very excited when I received my washer and dryer set. The dryer was Samsung and I couldn't have been happier with its performance. This washer, on the other hand, was an absolute disappointment. First of all, the wash cycle did not ever get completed. It would keep the clothes drenched and dripping with water when it technically "completes" a cycle. I couldn't wash even one large comforter without the machine making loud noises like it was overloaded. And one night at 3AM, I woke up to this washer running a full cycle automatically (the washer was empty and I hadn't even touched it before I went to bed) when the power button was off. In the middle of the night, I had to unplug the main to actually turn the machine off. I have filed for a return and exchange. I am going in for a Samsung washer. This is definitely not a reliable product. Glad to be getting rid of it.

The machine was delivered. The person who delivered this product told me to run a wash cycle to clean out the machine. Luckily I followed his instructions. I stayed with the machine the whole time. When the machine drained all of water to go into spin mode, it got stuck and would not stop pumping water out to go into spin mode. I tried a 2nd time and it did the same thing. The drain pump kept pumping after all the water was drained and would not go into spin. I called Best Buy and they told me no could come for another week to look at and fix. I told best buy that The Unit is defective and I will not accept it. I also told them to upgrade me for free on another model.I had to wait another week on delivery of another washer and cancel vacation plans I had in order to get the 2nd machine delivered. All in all,a very bad experience for me and a big WASTE of my valuable and very limited free time.

After reading all the negative reviews and after a month of use I found this machine to be better than expected. The noise is just different but certainly no louder than the 20 year old GE it replaced. The locking mechanism should not be a deterrent as it isn't as bad as the reviews I read. You can open the lid during the wash cycle. You must read the manual to get an understanding of the machine. I basicly operate this machine just as I did my old GE. More options but I have figured out what I need and keep it basic. I find that this strategy works for me. The clothes come out clean. I can adjust the water level to my satisfaction after experiencing how the machine operates under the different fill options. Some reviews spoke about the machine moving but I haven't had that experience. It probably is because my machine is in my basement on a concrete floor. I only hope the computer components of this machine can stand up to time. I took the five year extened warranty just in case. .

...YOU'VE FOUND HIM!! Huge stainless steel tub that only fills halfway. First load - towels. Filled the tub with towels and selected deep fill. Turned the machine on after I closed the lid, and about 10 minutes later, I hear the sound like a spring being tightened and loosened, back and forth. After I few more minutes, my dogs were in the laundry room barking at it. I stopped the machine and when I looked in, all of the towels on top were bone dry. I thought I had overloaded it, hence the sound. I took towels out until I reached wet ones, which was about half the load. Turned it back on... Same noise. I had the delivery man's cell phone, and he had been very helpful. He said to call if I had any questions. I called immediately and asked him about this sound... He said that was how it was supposed to sound. I asked if people complain about it? He said all the time. 2 biggest complaints....noise and low water level because of HE. I have already scheduled return.

So far so good! Have had this new washer for about a month. The last washing machine I bought was a fancy, expensive, digital piece of garbage. I wanted a washer that was old school and I could dial in what I want instead of having to chose a programmed cycle that was never exactly what I wanted. I also wanted dials instead of buttons because the last washer I had had all the buttons and I had the washing machine serviced 3 times for the circuit board and the buttons never worked properly. This machine is a little bit loud but I do not care about that. I can add water, which is a feature that has been missing for a long time in the new machines that are environmental. Let's face it, water cleans clothes. I hope I do not have any problems with the washer because I can say it is the best washer I have ever purchased. Much better than all the fancy expensive ones.

I was concerned with the bad reviews about noise and the washer "walking". Well, DON'T BE! First of all, if you owned a washer in the 90's before the age of front load being all the rage, then you know what a washer sounds like. This washer sounds like that. If you have your washer in a laundry room with a door, no problem. If it functions as the end table in your living room, then yeah, you're going to hate it. Secondly, if your washer "walks" then it was not properly installed. That;s not the washer's fault. Also, I made absolutely sure that if I hated the washer that I could return it NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Best Buy's policy is 30 day returns (45 days for me as an Elite Plus Member). So what are you waiting for? Get rid of that front load HE washer that sprinkles water on your clothes, waves an ounce of detergent over them, and leaves them only microscopically cleaner than they started. GO OLD SCHOOL - this is a great washer at a great price!
