While this is the HBO version, not the BBC version (BBC has additional aired footage that is missing from this US version), I would highly recommend this DVD series. Based on the real life story of Anne Lister who lived in the early 19th century, this 8 episode drama depicts the challenges of a land owning, gender non-conforming woman trying to make her way through the challenges presented by 1830s Halifax England. Anne was meticulous about writing her experiences in her diaries, much of which was written in code. Anne Lister may be best known for taking vows with Ann Walker on Easter 1834 at Holy Trinity Church in York. Everything about this production, scenery, costumes, writing, direction, acting is absolutely first rate; I expect we'll be hearing about Gentleman Jack in multiple categories at the BAFTAs this year.

Gentleman Jack tells the true story of a remarkable woman in 1832 England who ignored the restrictions of the day about what a woman was allowed to do and lived her life authentically, including choosing to marry another woman.
For those of us in the U.S. who may never have heard of her, star Suranne Jones (one of England’s most popular actors) is a revelation. Her performance elevates the entire production and makes Gentleman Jack “must see”.
This is period piece with a very modern feel. Well worth the watch.

I gave this 5 stars because the series is fabulous. It's unfortunate that HBO put almost no extras on this DVD release, though. If you have a region free DVD player and can get the UK version, I would go with that. But if this is the only way you can see the series, I highly recommend it. One of the best performances of the year by Suranne Jones!
