bought unlocked version, as alternative to troubled Galaxy Note series. VERY fast phone, NO lag even with resource intensive apps. Even more importantly, this is the ONLY Android phone I've had that consistently ran native stock android apps without trouble, but also ran ALL my other apps (professional, scientific, NO games) perfectly. In fact, it ran them MUCH faster and smoother than my Samsung S8 (which frequently closes apps or crashes). Dual SIMM capability a plus, so can add additional storage or use a second GSM SIMM for second line, if desired. Display was very bright, clear, & as readable in sunlight as any I've seen. Battery capacity (4000 ma/hr) is fantastic. Even in poor cell coverage areas (where battery drain is rapid), I could go all day running power hungry apps, and still have battery power left at end of day. Sound quality is ok (hey it's a cell phone) from the built in speakers. More importantly, output via the 3.5mm headphone jack is excellent - much better than my S8. Camera image quality is excellent thanks to the Leica lens & high resolution. Low light & video quality not quite up with the S8, but it's still very good. Zero complaints on that. BUT, there are significant problems. One is the outgoing sound quality in phone calls is atrocious. Callers could not hear me, complaining the sound was garbled or unintelligible. In speakerphone mode, callers said the call was great; just in regular phone mode it was difficult to hear. Another major problem - screen is very fragile, and cracks very easily. I found that out just 3 days after I bought the phone. It fell out of my jacket pocket, into dirt, at a distance of 30cm (1ft). Shattered the display. BB didn't have protective cases for the phone when I purchased, so I was waiting for one to arrive from online source. Unfortunately, it arrived too late. Huawei claims to replace the screen free of charge for first 90 days (0nce), no questions asked. Well, that would be nice if you could actually contact the company. Their customer service is NON EXISTENT. Leave your name/number/contact info, and they'll get in touch with you. Yeah, sure. After several attempts to contact Huawei, I gave up. Finally purchased a replacement screen at my expense. I would have been glad to pay Huawei to repair my phone, but could never contact them. Fast forward 3 months. Suddenly, the phone started rebooting at random. It crashed several times, going into Huawei recovery mode (which worked amazingly well, but requires HUGE data transfers). Finally, a few weeks later, the phone became unusable due to constant crashing and rebooting. I tried clearing partition cache, even wiping the phone & reloading all my apps & data (what a pain). Finally, phone started heating up, locked up, & became unresponsive. So, despite the fantastic performance, tons of features, and near total lack of usual bloatware most OEMs infect their products with, sadly I cannot recommend this phone. If Huawei had a responsive DOMESTIC customer service dept, and could resolve the issues mentioned, I would buy another Mate 9. But, until they improve the very fragile display (claims to be Corning GG 3 glass), and become customer responsive, I will not recommend anything by Huawei.
