This computer is doing exactly what I need it to do, which is run some more advanced games than my old gaming laptop. The cooling fan in it is a little loud, however. But ultimately, it is a great computer.

Gigabyte A16 Review: This Thing Actually Rocks!

So I got my hands on the Gigabyte Gaming A16, and honestly? Pretty impressed. This unit packs an Intel Core i7-13620H, NVIDIA's new RTX 5060 with 8GB VRAM, 32GB of DDR5 RAM (16GB x2), and a 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD. The 16-inch FHD+ screen runs at 165Hz, which is great for gaming. If you're looking for something that can handle serious gaming without breaking the bank, this might be your laptop. Setting this thing up was pretty painless. It comes with Windows 11 Home already loaded, and there's not a ton of junk software cluttering things up. First boot took maybe 90 minutes with all the Windows updates doing their thing. Gigabyte's software grabbed the latest drivers automatically, which was nice. Only annoying part was waiting for Windows to finish updating, but that's just how it goes with new laptops these days. This laptop feels solid. Like, really solid. The "Black Steel" finish looks clean and professional without being flashy. At about 5 pounds, it's not exactly ultralight, but it's totally manageable for a gaming laptop. The keyboard is surprisingly nice to type on. Keys have good travel and feel responsive whether you're gaming or just typing up documents. The trackpad is decent sized and smooth. The 16-inch FHD+ screen is really nice. It's 1920x1200 with a 165Hz refresh rate, so everything looks crisp and smooth. The extra height from that 16:10 aspect ratio is actually pretty useful for gaming (I don't use this for anything else like work stuff). Colors pop and it gets bright enough even in decent lighting. The speakers surprised me too. They've got Dolby Atmos and actually sound pretty good for laptop speakers. Not gonna replace your headset for serious gaming, but they're solid for watching videos or casual gaming. Alright, here's where it gets good. Once I got Steam loaded up, first thing I did was fire up Baldur's Gate 3 on ultra settings with DirectX. I'm about 18 hours deep into the game now, and this thing just keeps delivering. It's performing like a high-end desktop rig, which is wild for a laptop at this price. The RTX 5060 with 8GB VRAM handles pretty much everything I've thrown at it at 1080p on high settings. That dual-channel 32GB of DDR5 RAM means I can have a million browser tabs open, Discord running, maybe even streaming software, and games still run smooth as butter. The 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD is blazing fast and has plenty of room for a decent game library. Boot time is like 15 seconds, and games install quick. The cooling system works really well - Gigabyte calls it WINDFORCE with some fancy air-channeling stuff. During long gaming sessions, the laptop doesn't get uncomfortably hot at all. Yeah, the fans do kick in and you'll hear them, but it's not obnoxious. My wife actually said it sounds like "soothing white noise," so there's that. Way better than some gaming laptops I've used that sound like jet engines. Pro's: - Gaming performance is legit - Handles new games on high settings without breaking a sweat - Feels premium - Solid build quality that doesn't feel cheap or flimsy - Screen is excellent - 165Hz display looks smooth and colors are vibrant - Specs are generous - 32GB RAM and 1TB storage is more than most people need - Keyboard is comfortable - Actually enjoyable to type and game on - Cooling works great! - Stays cool under pressure without sounding like a vacuum - Good port selection - Has all the connections you'd actually use - Audio is surprisingly good - Decent speakers for a laptop Con's: - Fans do make noise - You'll hear them when gaming, though it's not terrible - Battery life is meh - Fine for basic stuff, but gaming drains it fast - RTX 5060 has 8GB VRAM - Might be limiting for future super high-end gaming - Small arrow keys - Minor annoyance but worth mentioning For $1,299, this laptop is a solid win. If you want something that can actually game well without spending desktop money, the Gaming A16 delivers. It's great for students who need something for both schoolwork and gaming, or anyone who wants one machine that can handle everything from spreadsheets to the latest AAA games. Or for someone like me who uses the "other" O/S for work but recognizes that the best gaming happens on Windows machines. The build quality feels like it'll last, and the performance is genuinely impressive for the price. Sure, the RTX 5060's 8GB of VRAM might become a limitation down the road for ultra-high settings, but right now it easily handles everything I've played. If you want a gaming laptop that doesn't compromise on performance or feel cheap, this is definitely worth considering. Just make sure you've got a power outlet nearby for those long gaming sessions.

    Solid mid-range portable gaming rig

Got the latest Gigabyte Gaming A16 Laptop after previously using the G5 model for a couple of years, and have been putting it through its paces both as a “desktop replacement” and a mid-range portable gaming system. Despite its larger size needed for the GPU and CPU dual fans it’s still under 1” thin and weighs just under 5 lbs but this model comes with a 16” screen, up from previous 15.6” generations. It came configured with 32 GB of DDR5 memory upgradable to 64 GB, and a fast 1 GB SSD M.2 NVME drive that’s plenty of space to install multiple games. If that’s not enough there is another M.2 slot so you can add a second SSD drive up to 4 TB in total. The Intel 13th Generation Core i7 13620H is getting a little old, though it does a commendable job with 10 cores that can run up to 4.9 GHz. The 10-cores combined with the 16 threads and 24MB smart cache makes this laptop great for multi-tasking and all around gaming, productivity and photo/video processing apps as well. Completing the initial Windows 11 setup took a lot longer than expected, downloading and installing Windows Updates, perhaps related to some of the custom Gigabyte software that’s also installed to provide AI capabilities. What makes this system a gaming laptop is the latest mobile GPU - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 video card w/8GB of dedicated DDR7 video memory, which is definitely a step-up from the previous RTX4060 generation. It now supports the latest DLSS 4 (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and Ray tracing that provides a fluid gaming experience for many games with high quality settings turned on. I have tried a few older games such as Call of Duty, Rise of Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto V with high visual settings @1080p resolution and easily got over 100 fps. You’ll be able to play most modern AAA games at high or ultra settings on the go while you’re away from your main high-end desktop rig that lets you max out all the visual settings. I also ran the classic 3DMark Time Spy benchmark out of the box with no updated drivers, no optimizations and got a commendable score of 14,863 with external 4K monitor, which is better than 70% of all results, putting this gaming laptop at least in the mid-range gaming category, with plenty of room for expansion. When running GPU heavy games or apps, the fans will also kick in high gear, but they aren't as loud as other laptops. That’s thanks to Gigabyte’s innovative WINDFORCE cooling technology that uses dual fans with 3D Vortex air-channeling to maximize airflow and minimize noise. Other important features are 4 total USB ports - 1 x USB-C 3.2, 2 x USB-A 3.2, 1 x USB-A 2.0 Also 1 x HDMI 2.1, 1 x DisplayPort 1.4 port and gigabit Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi 6E AX, Bluetooth 5.4 but no microSD-card reader. The newly redesigned RGB backlit keyboard is customizable and has a nice, solid feel to it with just enough travel and resistance, called the Golden Curve. The built-in speakers sound pretty good, supporting Dolby Atmos for an enhanced cinematic experience, but I found it best to play games with headphones on. The 16” LED WUXGA display offers an elevated 165 Hz refresh rate which is great for a fluid, flicker free gaming experience, but in my experience it wasn’t bright enough to use in a well lit room, especially with lots of sun or natural light. It is also not a touch-screen display, which would be nice to have at this price point. The battery life is better than previous generations, especially when not playing games using the power hungry GPU and 165Hz display. The new GeForce RTX 5070 Advanced Optimus with MUX technology is capable of switching to the integrated CPU video to save battery when you don’t need the more powerful dedicated GPU. If you’re doing more basic computing, with the built-in Intel video you can get over 10 hours of battery life. Either way, make sure you don’t forget the charger the laptop came with, because you will not be able to charge it as fast with a smaller USB-C charger. All in all, I would say this is a solid mid-level gaming laptop that can easily be upgraded to be even better and should satisfy most gamers on the go and also act as an affordable desktop replacement.

It hasn't burned a hole in itself like my last one. It has been working quite well and is only occasionally laggy but that is the WiFi's fault. It is able to run anything local to the laptop super quickly.
