Godspell has and will always remain a musical favorite from the very first time it appeared on stage. Stephen Swartz has gone to write several memorable musicals: Pippin, The Magic Show, and of course, Wicked, but Godspell was his first, and remains a heartfelt musical that has enchanted audiences around the world. Godspell was his first, and throughout its history, remains one of his most performed musicals, and of course, its is only second to Wicked, which is still playing successfully on Broadway and everywhere else imaginable. We must also not forget Swartz' Pippin, brought to Broadway by Bob Fosse in one of the most creative Broadway musical masterpieces of all time. Written originally while Swartz was still a college student, this musical is choked full of wonderfully tuneful songs, Day By Day being the show's greatest musical number. This wonderful film permanently amplifie its original intimate stage setting by expanding its charm by being presented in and about New York City. The film musical uses NYC as its centerpiece, and it becomes a glorious celebration throughout the greatest entertainment capital in America, be it Lincoln Center, or the Statue of Liberty and the long gone World Trade Center Towers as backdrops, to name only a few of New York City spectacular locations. Delightfully performed by a brilliant cast led by a young Victor Garber, as Jesus Christ, with memorable songs and brilliant color cinematopgraphy, though dated, yet timeless throughout. Now in Blu Ray, this musical masterpiece will be forever showcased in high definition. Godspell, past, now and always will remain a masterpiece of musical wonderment.

The Spirit of Vatican II Haunts This Movie

If you're looking for a "so-bad-its-good" version of the Gospel, this is it right here. Jam-packed with hoakey overacting, scenes of an effeminate Jesus, and ridiculous costumes, you'll alternatively laugh out loud and wish for death. This movie is also a must-see for Baby Boomers who wish to revisit the Spirit of Vatican II that killed the church and sacred art.

    Fond Memories From Years Ago

The Easter season and the NBC live updated production of Jesus Christ Superstar led me to search out this film version of Godspell from 1973. Interesting memories from 45 years ago were conjured up as I watched - not the least of which were a very young Victor Garber in the lead role, and views of the New York skyline featuring the ill-fated Twin Towers. Our local college's summer theater program had facilitated an early developmental production of Godspell on stage, making this all the more nostalgic.

I had seen Godspell on stage when it first came to Los Angeles and got the album on CD. I know the songs well. When the film came out I did not enjoy it as much as the stage play (pretty typical). Seeing it again on blu-ray was enjoyable and I'm glad I made the purchase. It does seem dated, but has its moments. The special features on the blu-ray are well worth it.
