    The New Millennium Godzilla

After an underwhelming attempt from Tristar to bring Godzilla into the US mainstream, Toho sought to dig back into Godzilla's ancestral roots, and resurrect him from the fiasco that was Godzilla '98. Though he was menacingly featured throughout his fantastic Heisei series run that culminated in his climactic death in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), his millennium return would prove to be just as nefarious as his previous version, but in more of a natural and instinctive way. His design was a bit more radical, but was still kept in line with his iconic image of a trademark Rex-like stature with triple rows of spiny dorsal plates down his tail; rather then just some overgrown mutated iguana. His more traditional looking appearance returned (of course, a huge confidence booster for die hard G-fans), and now heading into a worldwide release, including the good old US for big screens everywhere. Toho, not surprisingly, pulls out all the stops in this re-imaging of the Big G yet again. The story revolving around his re-emergence around Japan, and the mysterious origin of a gigantic, ancient rock structure of sorts. Soon though, the Japanese discover the rock to actually be a UFO and all mayhem ensues when the now revealed spaceship -- hidden inside initially -- attempts to energize itself with the cells of Godzilla in order to regenerate itself. Godzilla doesn't exactly take kindly to unwelcomed visitors, so a battle of epic proportions soon begins. Godzilla and the UFO cause even more havoc & destruction in their climatic standoff, in which eventually, the alien spaceship digresses and reveals a life-form inside itself, which coincidentally begins to transforms into one ugly mother....well, its given the code name Orga, which is dreadfully uninspiring btw. Inevitably, the two beasties duke it out, and Tokyo is decimated yet again. The film will appeal to G-fans the best, because it's all back to basics with this film, even with Godzilla's new retro design. There are no gimmicks, tricks, or fads pulled out in this film; it's just a straightforward monster flick with some straightforward monster brawling action. And at least this time around, it really IS Godzilla! The US would have to wait until 2014 to get some bit of redemption in remaking another Godzilla project, albeit with a much better reception after handling Godzilla's overall design with more care. But the movie concept & tone, well, what can I say....we still need to keep working on it I suppose. There are future US sequels yet to come, as well as ANOTHER Japanese re-boot in store as well. Godzilla 2000 was a nice film though, and it was good to see him (the Japanese version) on the big screen when this movie was initially released. His fandom is definitely gonna stick around for the ages. Long live the King of Monsters! 3 1/2 Stars

Produced by Toho as a "take that" to the awful American remake from 1998, I thought this Godzilla movie was really great! I also found it much better than the bloated Series 2 (1984-1995) films, and to be as fun as any of the Series 1 (1954-1975) films! The story was intriguing, the characters were likeable (and thankfully fewer characters, unlike the Byzantine Series 2 characters), the special effects are impressive (almost to the level of the new Gamera movies, and it even uses some CGI!), there was actually more hardcore monster action (as opposed to the in-your-face laser light shows of the recent films), Takayuki Hattori's music was well done for a non-Akira Ifukube score, and the movie doesn't take itself too seriously! Godzilla here looks his best yet, and the Millennian/Orga is one of Godzilla's more bizarre adversaries! Although the public response to this film was surprisingly positive, I was rather discouraged to hear the same words that US critics used to describe Japanese SF films past, such as "cheesy" and "campy." Although I don't mind poking fun at Japanese SPFX, I just wish they weren't so meanspirited. Besides, old fashioned suitamation FX has been improving in Japanese films, especially with the aid of CGI! You have to give them credit. I was very happy to see this film in the theater (I saw the Japanese version later on), and that Tri-Star brought this film to the US, partially to apologize to the US fans for that American monstrosity! I think it's time for the US to appreciate Japanese SPFX, and maintain its fandom in the US. In short, I reccommend this movie!

I'm a huge Godzilla fan but this Blu-ray was not worth the money. I got this to see if it was worth it but it's not. The only thing for this is that unlike the DVD this comes with both English and Japanese but other then this the Blu-ray is not worth because there's hardly any special features that could have been taken from the DVD and put on this but there isn't. Your better off just staying with the DVD that was better.

GODZILLA 2000 deserves to be out on Blu-ray !! This was one of my favorite " NEW WAVE " films since GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE was released . Story line is a bit different from the previous films , but interesting anyway ; a twist on the old 'Zilla plots we baby-boomers are used to . The special features are well worth the price of the disc alone . I just wished this had been re-done in 3-D ! The sound is awesome and picture quality is top notch . I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FILM TO ALL TOHO FANS !!

Normally with reboots and remakes with Godzilla, he was always solo, but this time, he fought another monster. An interesting monster at that. According to Cinemassacre's Monster Madness, this was a counter to Godzilla 1998(Zilla), and it was worth it. The movie is just awesome. I'm still working on getting 9 more movies. It's a pity that the Japanese audio wasn't included. I usually listen to the english audio, but hey, why not include the original language as well.

This is the sort of presentation Godzilla fans want, the US version and the Japanese version together. It also proves the US version is a bit better than the original, even to the point where Toho uses it now instead of their dubbed version. Picture is great, subtitles are fine, but the movie is a little dull in parts. Since it's got both versions, it's a good buy.

I actually saw this one in the theater! I'm a huge Godzilla fan and this is one of the better ones in the series!!! The new design of the big guy is great, and they use a man in a suit, miniatures and add in cgi to great effect!! Lots of action and great fights between Godzilla and a monster from outer space!

This movie was made & released as a response to the 1998 American version of Godzilla, which the Japanese cleverly refer to as G.I.N.O. ( Godzilla In Name Only ). Let's face it, our ( American ) take looked like a giant iguana. It was nice to see the famed movie monster back to its original form.

Godzilla! Space aliens? Yup! Japanese overacting? Oh yeah! Godzilla blowing stuff up and destroying Tokyo for like the gazillioneth time? Man he really does not like this country! Poor Japan! Any G Fan is gonna eat this up, and why shouldn't they? It's pure escapism.

The Toho Godzilla reboot was a great move. This version of the King of Monsters is better than the prior version. While this Godzilla is still done "old school" (aka no CGI), it still retains what I as a fan still enjoy with these movies.

A UFO reveals itself as a massive alien monster with awesome destructive powers. I found this film is thoroughly entertaining, and not just for the breathtaking sequences of destruction. Godzilla has returned to being the bad guy as well.

This movie features the King of the Monsters at his best! Less a hero for the people and more of him being a true force of nature. Minimal CGI, more grounded SPFX. This is what makes this movie franchise so enjoyable.

This is a very nice reboot of the Godzilla franchise and the first if the Millennium series. The Blu-ray includes both the Japanese and American cuts. The transfer is excellent, and the sound is really good too.

This movie is basically the inspiration for the newest Godzilla movie. As I was watching this one, I kept remembering scenes from the newest Godzilla movie. I'm glad I didn't spend the money for the new one.

This movies sticks to the original focus of the Godzilla movies. It is fun and enjoyable to watch if you are a traditionalist who likes the small models being destroyed by a man in a rubber costume.

After the disappointing U.S.-made Godzilla (1998) movie, this was proof that only the Japanese film makers can produce great Godzilla movies. It was a very nice addition to my Godzilla library.
