Monumental Blues Achievement--- Run To Buy It

KWS has delivered the best Blues 'compilation' or 'cover' album EVER. While he describes this album as "Going Home" to pay respects to his youth and childhood (and that is undoubtedly true) the real story here is that Kenny has gone to the 'home' **of many of the blues greats and has done some serious home improvements or makeovers in the process. Most of these classics sound better than they ever have before. As Kenny honors the influences of his youth , he also takes virtually every one of these classics to the next level. There is something far more important than your typical cover album going on here as KWS & his amazing band evoke memories of the originals yet at the same time elevate and improve just about every song here. In the process of paying homage to his blues forefathers, Mr. Shepherd has also proven that classics can be rejuvenated and made more relevant than ever before. He shows not only that these performers and songs helped to make him what he is today but that he literally has taken what he 'learned' or 'inherited' and either through Divine Inspiration or Blues Darwinism has proven that improvement of the blues species can & HAS occurred. Kenny has teased & tantalized us on past CD's with the occasional classic cover here and there. Bessie Smith's 'Backwater Blues' and Albert King's 'Oh Pretty Woman' on the "How I Go" CD provided a glimpse of what he and the band were capable of delivering but they were just the appetizers. Going Home Is The Main Course!!!! While the guest artists here are certainly laudable and supremely talented and a measure of the high esteem in which Kenny is held by industry greats, this CD is at it's absolute best when KWS is unleashed to do his thang . Noah Hunt as always makes a claim that he is THE VOICE when it comes to blues vocals and it is insightful to hear him owning the mic while dueting with some of the best singers around. Chris Layton , as usual, demonstrates his prowess as one of the world's best drummers , Tony Franklin shows why he's been on more albums than any other bass slinger and Riley Osbourn kills it on keyboards. With this CD I think it high time that the world recognize that KWS is not just that amazing young guitar player(that is oh so 20 years ago)but has grown/emerged- before our very eyes- into the best guitarist , gifted band leader and even a record producer in the industry today. While it's great that he has been able to pay his respects to his mentors, what is even greater is that in the process, Kenny has done all these folks proud by taking what he collectively learned from them to the next level and he's done it in his own style. In time, he will undoubtedly be recognized and awarded his own place in the pantheon of blues deities. Any doubters should objectively relisten to the originals of all songs done on Going Home and then take a relisten to similarly intended blues cover or tribute albums by 'industry greats' such as Eric Claptons "From The Cradle" and Paul Rodgers "Muddy Waters Blues" and compare them to Kenny's "Going Home". Kenny's effort is 100 times better than Clapton's lackluster going through the motions affair and easily beats Rodgers very competent and heartfelt effort. Judge for yourself. Well done Mr. Shepherd ** In Freddie King's case The Palace
