The concept of the Chromecast is appealing. Smart devices, particularly TVs and Blu-ray players generally abandon their smart apps after the year of release. But with Chromecast, you're using your smart phone as the remote, and your smart phone can continue to receive updates to app for years, and the apps are more responsive than those on smart TVs, BD players, etc.. So Chromecast is great at addressing those issues. The Chromecast is easy to use. Fire up the app on your TV and select the cast button to have the content delivered to your TV from the Chromecast directly. So why did I return it? The main issue is that for Netflix Chromecast doesn't deliver Dolby to my receiver, so I get stereo, not 5.1 surround. The Netflix app doesn't even provide me with the 5.1 option for the casting. I suspect it is because Netflix delivers Dolby Digital+, for which my receiver has no codec support. But I have a smart TV, a Blu-ray player, and a PS3 that all deliver 5.1 from Netflix, so while the Chromecast is responsive and lets me stay current with apps, the inability to get surround sound is a deal breaker for me.

I would say it definitely worth the upgrade. Easier to cast and set up.

Easy setup took about 10 minutes, only downside to this is it eats a lot of bandwith (I have DSL) and I must unplug it when I am done or it bogs down my router

My two young children broke the old Chromcast we had, so I had a decision to make. Either buy a refurbished old one or buy this new one for $5 more. I bought the new one, and I'm so happy I did. This is a lot more convenient than the older version. I love this chromcast and I would love for them to come out with a newer one, because I would definitely buy it!! Highly recommended!
