I was a bit hesitant to shell out 500 bucks on a phone but this was definitely worth the purchase. Hardware: solid phone, cool design. light on hands. camera is above average. Call quality is great especially on speakerphone. Gingerbread: extremely fast. cool new user interface. turn off animation and keyboard are amazing. NFC: have yet to use it Screen: great in sunlight. very bright when indoors.

Performance sucks for such a big hardware

I was shopping with a friend that wanted an iPhone 4 and is an addict to it, having had all the previous versions. I tried to convince him getting an Android instead, due to being open-platform and having more options, so we bought the Nexus S. But the Nexus S disappointed and we returned it at a mere 3 days of usage. The RAM usage limitation of 128M on that machine is problem #1, as you can't have many apps running. The flash memory not being removable is another issue, you can't add your own SD to the device. The lack of a physical keyboard would be compensated by a good on screen keyboard, but that is not the case, the vanilla one sucks and we had to buy a separate keyboard app for him to feel the same experience as the iPhone. Selecting text, cutting and pasting is a pain in Android (especially compared to the iPhone) and Gingerbread didn't fix that. With wifi off, 3G on and GPS off, not more than 5 minutes talking on the phone, and using email moderately, the battery life sucked at mere 6h usage. We tested it other days with other settings, and it didn't go over 8h on a single charge (that is slow to charge, also, you need to leave it hooked up the whole night for a full load). This remembered me of the good old AMPS Motorola brick-phone days. And Google hasn't fixed the email app, that doesn't forward attachments along with the emails yet. Version 3.0 and they still miss a simple feature. Amazing.

I've tried out every smartphone out there currently and past. With the exception of the display and battery life this one is best hands down. The question one must ask themselves is. Self, do I want free wireless hotspot, Full customization, Large display, Excellent build quality, Excellent call quality, Super fast OS, Internet browsing, and Processor? If you are willing to sacrifice having the best in the above categories for a better display and battery life then the only other phone that comes close to competing with the Nexus S is the IPhone 4. BTW after using the Samsung Epic for a month you would never know this unit is made by the same firm. The sturdiness of this Nexus is unbelievable and the battery life actually gets better with use!

OK, the Nexus S is a very fast phone with a beautiful display. People keep talking about networks. No matter what network your on, it won't matter if you have a low grade phone. The nexus s gives me the best call quality I have seen on a phone to date. Add on blazing fast internet browsing and a beautiful display and you have the best phone on their market. That's until they drop a dual core phone running on gingerbread or the iPhone5. As of now nothing can compare to the nexus s. Its not for novice smartphone users or newcomers to android because the phone comes completly naked. You have to download and customize everything yourself because there are no preinstalled cell phone comany bloatware. The battery life could be better but it is great compared to other android phones out now. I'm just used to my blackberries endless battery life. But if your looking for the most advanced phone with a great build quality that is worth the price tag and won't be obsolete in a year than this is the phone you are looking for. I highly reccomend the nexus s. I made this review on my nexus as well. Great phone

Why would I bother with the iPhone when I can have this excellent piece of equipment that I can use all over the world (without submitting to AT&T's deadly roaming fees)? I just pop in a local SIM, and enjoy 3G+ speeds and local calling/texting fees from anywhere I go... I'm writing this review from the Middle East now, and in a few weeks, I'll be surfing and answering emails in Europe, and I don't have to be a slave to T-Mobile, AT&T, or anyone! In addition, the fact that I don't have to be shackled to iTunes for doing things with my phone is an even better plus! The phone is fast, reliable, and I can see the screen in direct sunlight. I bought it to replace my HTC Desire that was doing the random reboot thing (and I couldn't see that screen in sunlight)... I highly recommend this phone if you have the means to buy it without the contract. But I think that the phone is unlocked even if you buy it with the contract, so you can still use other SIMs from around the world...

The phone just operates faster and more fluid than my Nexus One! Great phone, feels good and solid in the hand. The new features are great. The back cover does feel a little cheap, I put a case on it day one and I wish the battery lasted a little longer, though, it does last longer than the N1.

Switched from a WM 6.5 HTC phone to Android on this phone. The phone is very quick and responsive and the display is beautiful. Right size for easy reading Kindle, Nook and Boarders books. I've already had two over the air updates while the T-Mobile Vibrant just received a KIES update to Gingerbread. Overall I love it.

    great phone, confusing setup process

The phone is great. It does everything I need and much, much more. Other reviewers have said it all. Android 2.3 is (at least for a beginner like myself) quite easy to understand and use. I am still exploring it. The reason I am taking the time to write this review is because Best Buy and Tmobile did a very lousy job in making this purchase easy for the customer. Putting it simply, it's just complicated: first you have to buy the phone at BestBuy, it's not offered through tmobile. Then you receive the box from BB and you read that you have to call a certain number to activate your phone. ok. I call that number and this incompetent person (he greeted me with "awesome dude", seriously!) starts to ask me all these questions like I was the first ever customer who did this purchase. he didn't even see/access all the info that I already entered while purchasing the phone through the BB site (phone, plans, check out ss # and all that stuff). He kept asking if this is a prepaid phone...I said clearly and politely that all I wanted was to activate my phone and transfer my number from previous provider. To make the story short, he transferred me to another person (in a far away country) and after struggling with understanding what she was saying, and she what I was saying, I had to hung up. I decided to drive to a T-mobile center (luckily there is one close by) and the guys there were knowledgeable and kind enough to complete the process for me. There is no way this wonderful phone will ever make it to the big market if one has to go through this hassle. I can see how someone who doesn't care too much about pure Android etc.. would just return it and go to a Tmobile center to get one of the other smart phones. Again, great phone, but BB/Tmobile/Google sale and marketing "strategists" did not sit down together once, I bet you. And they didn't test the buy+set-up process themselves.

Yeah this phone is pretty old compared to the new dual/quad core super phones out there, but the design is elegant, the camera is decent and it has ICS 4.04 which all the new phones are struggling to upgrade to. It is a pure google experience. NFC is nifty as well. Battery life is a bit short if you are a heavy user, but it will get you through the day just fine

The Nexus S is the second Android phone I've owned and it's been great!! Camera takes great photos, although I have no idea how to zoom, has a very large amount of internal memory which is good for all the apps and photos I have, and I don't even care that it doesn't have a removable memory card. Of course with any smart phone, the battery is going to go fast if you use it a lot and have a lot of apps that end up constantly running; but to remedy that everyone should go and download Juice Defender, a free app in the andriod market, it works AMAZING!! It's very rare that my phone has dropped below 40% in a full day of using it. Great phone, I have no complaints.

before nexus, I had a Blackberry Bold and i was pretty much a "keypad"-type of user because touch screen keypad drives me nuts. However, ever since i decided to give nexus a try, i think i can get pretty much used to typing with touchscreens (but somehow nth beats the typing accuracy with keypad) Nexus S has an awesome screen resolution and definition. Despite the adjustable screen brightness feature, I usually will set it under the lowest brightness level and the screen output still appears awesome. 5MP camera gives great photo quality and sharpness, however, NO ZOOM FUNCTION AVAILABLE! I find this extremely flawed and the lack of such basic function does cause inconvenience especially if you want to record a video using the phone camera. Another bug the camera has is that, it doesnt focus on the subject in EACH take. If you were to snap a photo of an object for three continuous rounds, your first two photo shots can be crystal clear and the third one jst goes out of focus - and that can get quite annoying at times. File cut-and-paste couldnt be perform directly, files cannot be organized directly unless the file manager apps is downloaded, or you could cut-paste through the computer after USB-connecting it to the phone. The first Nexus S i purchased had some software bugs and it hangs or auto-switched-off halfway during phonecalls. However, the current Nexus i'm using now is a newly exchanged model, and so far it has been fine. Other than these mentioned, overall Google Nexus S is quite a good phone for beginners. Lightweight and it has a slightly curve/contour that allows better grip and fits comfortably to yr ears, compared to stiff flat smartphones.

    Best Android Phone to Date

Smooth performance, great screen, comfortable weight, great battery, huge selection of apps. From 3D games to facebook, apps all run well and do as good or better than their iPhone 4 counterparts. Much better than an Android phone with manufacturer add-ons or apps. Yuck. Cons? Camera quality isn't as good as it should be. Video recording isn't 720p or 1080p, which it should be. No removable card to upgrade storage. WiFi has to be reset frequently (which takes under 5 seconds). Highly recommended for T-mobile folks. A Verizon version would be killer for the 3G where I live.

A great Android experience with a butt.

Design: the Nexus S features a contour screen which is meant to be more ergonomic for calling. i haven't noticed any benefits or drawbacks to this design element. it also doesn't affect gaming or tasking when using the touch screen. the phone is comfortable in hand and, in my personal preference, the ideal size in overall dimensions and 4" screen. it does have the signature Samsung "butt" at the lower end which took a bit to feel comfortable with. the backing is made of plastic which is disappointment for a Google flagship phone, but the plastic is solid without any flexing and really doesn't hurt the feel. Performance: this phone comes preloaded with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) which as of right now is the latest version of Android for phones. it's a snappy device that's very smooth and responsive. with my settings, tasking and web usage at a medium i've found the battery life to last at least a full work day. Features: this phone will run any of the Android apps currently and (likely to an extent) future apps to be developed. this is a stock Android phone so there are no OEM skins bogging down the performance. overall the best smart phone experience i've had. the biggest gripe is the lack of an LED notification light, so i have to regularly awaken the phone to check for anything new. for it's time it is a bit pricey especially for it's build quality and lack of 4g support. however it runs smooth and functions very well.

I absolutely love this phone. This was a major upgrade for me so i was pretty nervous. The touchscreen, the voice actions, the ease of use (even for a beginner), the picture and video quality, so many useful apps...Need i go on? The best thing to come to cell phones thus far. Okay, nothing is perfect, so if I have any gripes it would have to be the battery life. No biggie, there's an app that helps somewhat. Overall...totally happy with my Nexus S. =D

2nd time around due to battery life

This is my second no contract Nexus S, the first one I bought had a 'defective' battery, it only gave me 9-11hrs on average, after researching online found lots of NS owners with the same issue as well as lots of users with average battery life of 24-30, apparently with moderate usage. So I chalked it to a bad battery batch. I enjoy the phone so much; great look and feel on the hand, fast, did not see difference v. 4G phones when it comes to accessing your standard website, easily customizable, would like to have an external SD but it's not a deal breaker.

If you had a Nexus one, then this phone is not much different. Gingerbread (2.3) is really no different from Froyo. You will sense an increase in speed however. The hummingbird processor feels more capable. The screen is amazing, way better than the N1. No sd support, HSPDA+, HD recording and LED TRACKBALL how ever is a drag for me. But hey you get updates straight from Google with NO carrier or manufacturer interference. Pure android is the only way to go !

I love my Nexus S. I haven't had any trouble with it. It is fast and has great video and audio quality. There are apps for just about anything. It is highly customizable. If there are any drawbacks, it would be that the speaker and ringtone volume maxes are not quite high enough. There is also no zoom on the camera. However, the picture quality is excellent, so I can crop & zoom once I transfer the pics to my computer.

Definitely an improvement over the Nexus 1, which is still a great phone. Screen was very smooth and responsive (watch out iPhone) and features worked well without issues. Missing sd slot was kind of strange (copying iPad) and phone did not seem like it was expensive as it was. I liked the all black look and the simple but interesting design (slight bend in display).

Please give this phone a chance, I think you'll be very very pleased. with any android phone there are issues, but with this 1 there are none. I believe the only flaw of the box is no video chat compatible software. Most people will complain about the battery, but with a data phone we push it to the limit. Go get this phone right now. So you can experience true android powered by google! Oh and by the way, I did this entire review from my phone using voice input!

Pros: It's slim, it fits in a pocket well, it has a great screen. Cons: Short battery life (although much better with the 2.3.2 update). No real keyboard. Overall, it's a great phone, and huge upgrade over my blackberry. The android OS still has some real flaws, but this is the best android phone out there, so if you're going to buy an android phone, buy this one. My biggest issue is the lack of ringtone profiles. I miss being able to set "office" or "home" or "oncall" and have that set a bunch of things automatically.
