My new favorite Chromebook after trading 2017 OPB

Even though I have been, and continue to be, a full time IT professional for the last 35 years, and must use Windows at work in my IT Analyst position, I have used Chrome OS at home and for a non-profit my wife and I run exclusively for over the past four plus years. I've had a variety of ChromeOS devices, Asus Chromebox, Acer R11, Samsung Chromebook Pro, 2017 Pixelbook, and recently the Pixelbook Go i5 variant with 8gb ram. While I'm late to the party in some respects, I finally got up the nerve to order a Pixelbook Go thinking it could not possibly replace my 2017 Pixelbook, and really just wanted to see what all the raves were about and then planned to return it. A month later it's still on my desk in daily use at home and for work that doesn’t require Windows (Office 365, Outlook, Teams, Onenote, etc) And the 2017 Pixelbook? Sold it after 2.5 years of heavy use and yellowing wrist wrests, but otherwise working famously. Call me crazy for giving up 3:2 aspect ratio, use as a tablet and pen input, but after trying the Pixelbook Go I just couldn’t go back. The rounded corners and light in the hand feel brought me back to my favorite Chromebook before the Go, the Samsung Chromebook Pro, but without the creaky frame, this thing is solid. The keyboard, others have said it hundreds of times, is really good. But I will warn you, if you’re coming from the original Pixelbook, you won’t understand the greatness of this keyboard until you’ve typed on it for a while. A quick try in Best Buy numerous times never convinced me as the OPB takes more pressure on the keys. Once you learn to lighten up, it is so wonderful. The backlit keys are absolute perfection, especially compared to the fail of the 2017 OPB that requires you to turn off backlighting when there is just enough ambient light to make seeing the keys extremely difficult with backlighting on. I appreciate the larger trackpad, but will say there hasn’t been any improvement in palm rejection, still need to keep tap to click disabled. Otherwise the trackpad is better than the OPB, though it still needs a bit more force than I would like to click, but the OPB was worse. To be honest, as far as its use as a tablet, I haven’t really missed the OPB as I mostly use my Pixel 4xl to browse, the web, social media and email, and it's big enough to serve the same purpose. For pen input, I didn't really use it that much lately anyway. So there you have it, this 65 year old IT pro traded in his OPB for the Pixelbook Go, and am loving life with my new daily driver. J

If you want a really good chromebook, the Pixelbook Go is the way to go. Great battery life, great build, super light, great keyboard, amazing laptop speakers. If you are in the market for a secondary laptop and you have the budget, this is definitely a great experience. Definitely a little overpriced though.

The first Chromebook I owned was the pixelbook go base model. The device was awesome. Before buying a Chromebook I was very skeptical about what a Chromebook could do, and though they were a waste of money; especially when a person could get more functionality out of an iPad. However, after owning one, and figuring the different workarounds; like when downloading documents or files, I have completely changed my interpretation of owning one. As mentioned, the first Chromebook I have owned was the base model PixelBook Go. The reason why I had chosen to upgrade was because of the processor and storage. The base model was not sluggish, but it wasn't quite enough to run Microsoft apps, at least from my experience. Since owning the i5 version, anything from the PlayStore to Chrome Apps opens quickly with no hiccups. My advice is if the PixelBook Go is going to be your primary computer, I recommend purchasing the i5 version, especially if you see one as an open box like I did :)

Think MacBook Air light- not too many apps properly sized but all the Google ones are unsurprisingly excellent- offering web apps/extensions. Regardless, it’s imperative to get the 128 GB version or you WILL run out of space. Unlike my beloved MacBook Air- the Pixelbook Go is much more sturdy- no case required- just a light sleeve for transport. Lightning fast and high def screen. Couldn’t be happier and feel much more confident taking this out with me on the go- than the MacBook Air 2020 M1. Both are excellent however and you get what you pay for in each case.

Great for Google apps users. Pairs well with our Google Pixel 5 phone. First time get to text and not need the phone. Performance and battery life is excellent. Design and keys look sleek and simple, does not look messy like others. Very lightweight. There is no USB port if you do need it, this is not for you. Touchscreen is great but always forget it's touchscreen so I barely use it. Looks like a big Pixel 5 with the nice matte finish and round edges.

While the Pixelbook Go might be more expensive then other Chromebooks, the price premium is definitely explainable. It's impressively light and works well on any surfaces - the two rubber strips on the base make sure it wouldn't slide around. It's battery is extremely long lasting and I'm always surprised to see how little battery it has used whenever I check it. This is still the case after 4 months of use and I hope it will stay the same for years to come!

Pixelbook Go is everything I need in a computer. It's just the right size and performs well. It's got a really nice screen and the best speakers I've had in a laptop. It's what I use most of the time to stream Disney Plus. Also, it has a really nice backlit keyboard and extra large trackpad.

    A Charm To Use

After a lot of research, I made the jump from PC to the Pixelbook Go. I retired a few years ago and was doing all my document and spreadsheet work in Google Docs and Sheets after decades of loving Excel and hating Word. Anyway, the Google apps open more smoothly and promptly now compared to my 4 year old Yoga 720. Overall, I love the simplicity and ease of Chrome OS. The Pixelbook Go is just a charm to use. All the positive reviews are totally justified. I narrowed my shopping down to this or the HP 14C, but once I tried them out in person there was no competition. The Go was superior in screen brightness, keyboard, weight, etc. It just has a special feel to it that sets it apart from all the other Chromebooks. Though it cost more it was worth it to me. No regrets after several weeks of use.

This is a great little device! I bought it because it’s aesthetically pleasing. However, it exceeds my expectations of a chrome book. I like the touch screen, but it would be more beneficial if you could flip it around to use it as a tablet. Wish it was slightly bigger, but that’s a vanity thing. It’s quick to load, has better storage than my old one. Holds a great charge. It’s definitely pink. Which is why I love it, but it is pink. Overall, I love it. Perfect for my needs.

2 years later and the Pixelbook is still one of the best Chromebooks in the market. Nice design, great speakers, an awesome keyboard and descent display. They're plenty of newer Chromebooks out there but this is the one I prefer.

This computer is very sleek, compact, and lightweight. Keyboard feels great, everything operates very smoothly. Battery life is excellent--I can work for many hours before having to plug in. My main issue is the matte black gets smeared/greasy very easily which makes it look less-than-beautiful.

I paid over $600 for this laptop and it was pretty frustrating trying to get accustomed to it. The device is essentially set up like a large android device. Not your typical Windows computer. However I did like how lightweight it was. Was only compatible with android phones and doesn't have a caps lock button at all.

This was my first time purchasing and owning a Chromebook and I have really enjoyed it! I already owned a Google Pixel phone so that made it really easy to already be engaged within the Android atmosphere. This computer starts up extremely quickly, works well, and I have had no issues with it at all. If you are looking for a computer that is simple, reliable, and mainly used for using the internet and doing a quick few things then here is the one!
