This television series is Genius!!! It's set in a slightly ambiguous period of time following the rise of young police detective James Gordon, and the machinations of a very somber and surly teenage Bruce Wayne. The root of all evil remains politics, religious frivolity, and greed. It resolves the goofier aspects of Gotham's criminals into personality quirks, and various psychological and physical traumas. Meta-humans have a theoretical reality, always on the verge of being discovered yet get overlooked because of egocentricity, emotional turmoil, and personal dramas. Like I said... genius!!!
Now... based on a few visual clues and story arc tidbits, it could be interpreted during the time frame of Bruce Wayne's early teenage years as part of the latest movie franchise series involving the Justice League, kicked off by 'Man of Steel' (2013) And 'Batman vs. Superman' (2016) and 'Suicide Squad' (2016).
There's much more going on here than what's being seen at face value. Words like... multiverse and crossover and alternate realities and paralleling universes, come to mind.

This was one of the best new shows on TV last year. (I know it doesn't exactly match the comic books. I don't care.)
(Nothing below is a spoiler. It's either stuff you know from season 1 or stuff that gets shown to you in the first 10 minutes of season 2)
Season two kicks off with Jim Gordon being on unfriendly terms with the GCPD and having to make tough decisions about it. The series still centers around Gordon as the main character.
Young Bruce Wayne and Alfred are exploring what's down that creepy stairway behind the fireplace that they discovered in the final scene of season 1. (Gee...you think maybe it'll end up being a big cave that could be used as some kind of secret base of operations for a vigilante crime fighter? I dunno...I might be reaching on this one...)
Penguin continues to be seriously creepy, even more so than in season 1. It's still strange that The Penguin is played by the skinniest actor on the show. I mean The Penguin has always been the little fat villain. But at least he's short. Maybe they will have him become a big eater in later seasons.
The production value on the series continues to be really high. The sets are elaborate. The costuming and make up are great. The acting is fantastic. All the villains are wonderfully acted. It's got a very realistic look while maintaining the dingy comic book vibe of Gotham.

Season 2 of "Gotham" takes up where Season 1 ended. This show is intended to be the 'back story' of the villains and heroes(besides Batman) of Gotham City. I was not aware of just how corrupt it was. Now I, and, you, know better. A TV reviewer(whose name escapes me) stated that the story(ies) of the villains are more interesting than the heroes. I can't disagree. When it was being broadcast; the season's theme was "Wrath of the Villains". The producers did a good job of fulfilling that theme. A good number of the villains who will face off Batman in the future are featured; and Dr. Hugo Strange also makes his appearance. Bruce Wayne comes closer to finding out who killed his parents and why. The program goes from strength to strength. Jim Gordon's past is shown. Even Harvey Bullock gets a lot of time in the light(and is coming out as a very good cop). I cannot recommend this show and this season enough. There are also a LOT of special/bonus features with this season. Some are only a minute or two; some are up to 20-30 minutes or more. There is a lot to explore beyond the episodes; take the time to do so; you won't regret it.

Talk about a nail biter season! Ok when I watch films I do so on a 180" movie theater screen with full 7.1 surround sound and the Buttkicker transducer system. This is not to Boast but to give an idea of the clarity that I rate both 4k and 1080p films. 1st off regardless if you are huge into 4k or still collect Blu-ray; I will add that with today's (Oppo) upscaling technology along with upscaling technology on theater projectors that the difference between Blu-ray & 4k is minimal. I will say that going over 180" that you will likely see a difference and recommend 4k for 150"+ screens. I found the season to be worth ever penny and look forward to buying all of them now. Sound & visuals are of bluray quality. No real extras but loved it!

If you're a Batman fan or just a fan of good tv, this is a great series to pick up. Love seeing the new takes on characters, especially the more obscure ones. Gotham is all about the city itself and what events have made it become the city of crime that it is today. You won't find Batman here, but instead a very young Bruce Wayne. You see his transformation very slowly over time as well as the villains (which is the most fun part, let's be honest). That process of evolution of the heroes, villains, and the city is what makes this show so great. Everyone loves a good origin story in movies and you can look at this series like one huge origin story that takes place over several seasons of hour-long episodes.

I wasn't too excited when I found out they were doing a TV series about Bruce Wayne before he becomes Batman, but after finally giving it a chance on Blu-ray (I also have season 1, which I also bought at Best Buy if I remember correctly) I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Now obviously I would still prefer a show about Batman, but for what it is I love it!
The second season looks great on Blu-ray, and I would definitely recommend picking it up if you're on the fence about buying it! I can't wait to pick up the season 3 Blu-ray, I'm just hoping Best Buy (or anyone) has it on sale for Thanksgiving or Black Friday.

I've only watched the first episode so far, and it's great, but I bought the new set based on the excellence of the First Season. The entire cast is xlnt. Jada Pinkett Smith creeps me out even worse than Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), and Robin Lord Taylor is riveting as The Penguin, a phenom. The series is dark, gritty, and nasty in the way it was when it started with Bob Kane and then resurrected under Neal Adams in the comics. I hope this one stays on-air for a very long time; GREAT comix-turned-TV! I can't wait to dig into this season.

While I have never claimed to be a big Batman fan, this television series is one of the best shows ever created on TV. The choices for each of these characters was 1st rate and the performance by each is outstanding. This is one show on TV I do not miss any episodes of, and owning the series on Blu Ray is a great opportunity to see the performances once again. I don't get "hooked" on many TV shows, but this series is outstanding. If you like action, great story lines, and great performances, I would highly recommend this series.

Despite what I am sure some would think of this concept, I was curious about Season one. The idea of going into a world long before Bruce Wayne becomes Batman seemed a bit odd. Yet to see some of the Dark Knight's villains start to evolve slowly into how we know them today (Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman), was actually pretty interesting. Also interesting to see a young Jim Gordon start to deal with the corruption of the city before rising to the ranks of being the Commissioner. Looking forward to more and hope for future seasons.

Hahaha in fact, batman does not yet exist in this dark, edgy version of our favorite night cowled crusader! All the villains are introduced BEFORE becoming an arch nemesis of the "BAT" and we watch their transformations into what we love/hate about each one. We also watch a young Bruce Wayne struggling with his life and the path that he will ultimately choose! I for one cannot wait for his final transformation into Batman!

I really love Monday nights now. GOTHAM has very quickly become one of my fave shows on tv. Robin Lord Taylor steals every scene that he is in. He has made Penguin a very sympathetic character, You really do want to see him win! Any screen time with him and Cory Michael Smith is tv gold! The addition on Dr Strange & Ms. Peobody is another casting home run. You will not be let down with GOTHAM season 2!

I love love love what they did with the first season! What a feast for those who know all the little facts and expansive characters from Batman's city! But... they brought back a character that didn't need to return. Things are starting to go a little crazy with the usage of Bat's characters, not sure where they are headed. I understand that they took some liberties with the characters to fit into the story they are trying to tell, but with the latest events from "Indian Hill" I'm not sure I like where this is going. Let's hope the next season continues Bat's history, and not something we Bat-fans don't recognize.

This show just keeps getting better and better. Out of it's two season run, there is not a single bad episode. The characters are complex and compelling. The story lines illuminate and challenge what you thought you knew. You cheer for both hero and villain. You couldn't ask for a better show. It is a little more carnage based then other shows, but that is to be expect in Gotham City.

The show was intended to be a prequel of Bruce Wayne's journey to being the Batman, the way Smallville was for Superman, but it seems to focus more on Gotham's villains and their rise in the crime syndicate and Commissioner Gordon's battle to bring them down. For those who wish to see Batman, you will be disappointed as Bruce Wayne is not yet in his teens. Hopefully, a few more years down the road, however we do get a flavor of Batman's rogue's gallery of villains to come in the future. Batman fans just have to be patient. Remember there was ten seasons of Smallville.

To me, this show is worth watching once. So typically I would not recommend buying it but if you or someone in your household likes to watch things multiple times it is definitely worth the buy. It is a great show that like Smallville goes too far into the heroes/villains surrounding the superhero the show is centered around to make sense but just throw your superhero logic (superheros being logical is funny I know but bear with me), out the window and enjoy the show for what it is, entertainment with elements of things you probably like about Batman.
