My Game-Changing Lawnmower Experience!

After years of apartment living where yard maintenance was handled for me, buying my first home meant facing the reality of lawn care. As a single mom, I initially hired services, but finding reliable, quality work at a fair price became increasingly frustrating over the past year. That’s when I decided my kids and I would tackle our own yard maintenance – and wow, am I glad we did!
I’ll be honest – gas-powered equipment and I have never been friends. The struggle to get them started, running out of fuel at the worst moments… it was always a headache. But this electric mower has completely changed my perspective on yard work!
The self-propel feature is brilliantly designed. You can toggle it on and off, which I love because sometimes I want full control for detailed work around flower beds. Sure, even on the slowest setting it can feel zippy for precision work, but for those long stretches across the yard? It’s absolutely fantastic – and trust me, in California’s Central Valley summer heat, any help is welcome!
What really impressed me was how practical this mower is for storage. The handlebars fold down completely, and it stores upright in such a compact footprint. Plus, it’s surprisingly lightweight once you get it out of the box – no more wrestling with heavy equipment.
The battery life exceeded my expectations. I mowed both front and backyard (decent-sized lots) and still had charge remaining. No more mid-mow gas station runs or keeping extra fuel around!
This purchase has inspired me to gradually replace all my yard tools with similar quality equipment. The reliability and convenience have been such a relief – no more Craigslist searches for yard services or dealing with no-shows.
If you’re on the fence about making the switch to electric or taking on your own yard maintenance, I genuinely recommend giving this a try. It’s made what I thought would be a chore into something actually manageable and even a bit satisfying!

A good mower with a solid ecosystem behind it.

The first thing to know about getting any battery-powered tools like this is that you are probably buying into an entire ecosystem of tools. It is a definite bonus to be able to have a bunch of tools that share the same batteries. This mower uses 80V batteries, so what other tools can you get that also use these same batteries? Well, Greenworks also has string trimmers, blowers, snow blowers, trimmers, and even chain saws. So potentially, if you buy more than one product, you can have more than one battery on hand to run everything. Or, if you have enough batteries, you can buy the tool only and save some money. This is why, when buying a tool like this, sticking with one brand can pay dividends.
With that out of the way, this is my first time venturing into a battery-powered mower. My old gas-powered one was starting to break. The first impressions are that the quality is quite good. The body is plastic, and not metal like mowers of yore, but that seems to be the standard these days. This mower features a head light! I have never had a desire to mow at night, but I guess it is there if you need it. It does not cost much to add, and it takes very little battery power, so no harm. The motor is advertised as being brushless, which is a big bonus. Brushes are a major wear point on electric motors, so this should mean a longer service life. There is a safety key under the housing that covers the battery bay. Removing this means that the mower will not operate, which is a useful safety feature. Archaic mowers require a hard yank on a pull cord to get them to start, but electric ones can start with just the press of a button, so extra safety is good. The controls are easy and obvious. You pull on the safety handle and press the start button, starting up the mower. It shuts off as soon as you let go of the handle. Note that only one side needs to be held down, so you don’t need both hands. When hitting extra-thick grass, there is a turbo button. This model is also self-propelled! There are two paddles that, when one of them is activated, the unit drives itself. There is a slider that lets you adjust the speed. The battery claims up to 0.2 acres, which should be plenty for a quarter-acre lot suburban house. Recharges take about an hour, but you only get one battery. It also features the ability to fold the handle which allows the unit to sit vertically, only taking up around 18” of space. This is a nice touch. Note that the packaging also advertises that the unit produces a lot of torque even when the grass is thick. I didn’t have grass thick enough to test this out, but it makes sense. Gas mowers can get bogged down, and if the blade stops turning, you lose all power. But electric motors can output torque even when not moving. This is why a Tesla car only needs a single-speed gearbox and no torque converter. The height adjustment was also convenient, with only one lever that needed to be moved to adjust all four wheels.
There are some things that are not quite flaws, but that I feel that I should mention. The first is that when storing the mower vertically, it takes up 18” only when in “mulch” mode. If you use the included rear bag to catch the clippings, then the bag sticks out when stored which takes up 30”. If space is at a premium, then stick to mulching. The only other complaint was that the included user manual was printed in some of the smallest text that I have seen. For people with aging eye, a larger manual would have been appreciated. When comparing the self-propelled feature to my previous gas-powered mower, my old mower had a “sliding” arrangement of the handle. The more the handle was pushed, the faster the wheels would spin. This means that the mower just kind of kept up with you. If you walk slow, it moves slow. If you stop, it stops. There was no need to think about how fast to set the speed, it just kept up with you. This mower, on the other hand, has paddles that need to be pulled in, and there is a separate speed control. So you have to manually adjust the speed to fit your needs. It still works and is a VERY appreciated feature, but it could have been implemented in an easier-to-use fashion. Still, this is a minor complaint. Overall, I am pleased.

This is the best lawnmower. My brother originally purchased one for himself and one for my mother. I really like the idea of no gas, so when our mower stopped working after 20yrs I purchased one for my husband. 3 of our neighbors have also now purchased this mower. The 80V battery will last my husband almost the entire cut, but we do have a large yard. He swaps the battery with another battery from one of the many other Greenworks products we’ve purchased. This mower is also less quiet then gas mowers which is a plus. I wish the rest of my neighbors would purchase so I didn’t have to hear them mowing lol My husband also likes that you can stand this up to save space. He thought this was irrelevant when I brought it to his attention at first, but that’s one of the first things he tells anyone when talking about it. ha

Time will tell but so far this mower has done a great job for me. It’s lightweight, cuts fantastic, doesn’t bog down in thicker patches, and I really like that it has adjustable speeds when using the self propelled feature. The highest speed seems pretty quick to me. Some people have mentioned that you can’t back up and have to lift the rear wheels off the ground and pull it back after releasing the self propelled handle. If you roll it forward a little after releasing the handle, the rear wheels are unlocked and you can roll back and forth with no issues. If you don’t do this, the rear wheels do not roll backwards. Once I figured that out, it was smooth sailing. It’s a minor adjustment and one you probably won’t notice after you do it a few times. Battery life is as advertised. My lawn is 1/3 acre and I will most likely purchase an additional battery. I really like the idea of not having to winterize this mower or go buy gas, fuel additives, etc. Pushing a button instead of a pull start is nice too.

So far, no issues. Has plenty of power and good battery life. I wouldn't try to mow through high thick weeds or rough brush. It's easy to set up and once your battery is charged, you're ready to go. It may seem like a plastic devise, but it is heavy. Very easy to store in a small space

Amazing power. Amazing features. Ultra light at 40 pounds and easy to hang on a wall in the garage or shed. First cut I made with the lawn mower, the grass was about a 12 inches tall. It cut through it like butter. Never bogged. Turbo mode automatically kicks in when the lawn mower detects a load or slow down on cutting. It also has a power mode which allows the lawn mower to move slow to fast. The fast mode, I had to laugh. I was practically jogging to keep up to it. And again, no bogging or slowing of the cut. The 80v battery lasts a good length of time without having to recharge. I have a 1/4 acre yard, and the battery level still had 2 power bars left. I am extremely happy with my purchase of the Yardworks 80v rear drive powered lawn mower and recommend to anyone looking to go ECO friendly.

This is one of my best decisions ever! I wanted a new mower that I could manage easily when caring for my yard myself! Great battery life, speed, ease of machine care and storage. I have a medium sized yard can do both front and back on one charge. Battery charges quickly and I really appreciate the self propelled variable speed.

This mower is really amazing. The first thing I did when I put it together was go to the highest grass area, which was above my ankles. There were a couple of very dense areas which would have choked my old gas mower out. Instead, I could hear the engine rev into turbo mode and it made short work out of it without choking even once. I didn't bag it because I wanted to see how well it mulched that tall grass and I was not disappointed. It was very well mulched. I had to do my yard (1/2 acre) in sections for the first mow and the battery did the first half on one charge and the second half on one charge. Once I got the grass under control, between my 2 amp and my 4 amp batteries I can get the whole yard done with battery to spare. The self propel is amazing. I have a steep hill that is always like doing push ups with my gas mower. Whatever part of the hill I can walk, the mower can too. It takes a little getting used to getting the speed where it is a comfortable walk without jogging, hah! Also, if you take it out of self propel, you need to push it a couple of inches forward and that disengages it. Then it walks like a regular mower. I thought it was getting stuck when I pulled it back until I learned that neat little step. My only issue with it is that the nuts and bolts that secure the handle on have come off after 4 uses. I did not realize it until 2 days ago. I am handy with tools and I did secure them tightly. I do not have either of them, so I called Greenworks and unfortunately they are out of stock with no ETA of when they will be back in stock. It will be a pain in the rear to go to a hardware store and try to figure out exactly what size they are. I am a Totaltech member, and I would hate to have to bring this whole unit back because the nuts and bolts malfunctioned. We are getting into warm weather now, so I cannot wait weeks for the parts to come in. If I had been able to easily replace them I would have given this mower an easy 5 star rating. It is a total beast in the yard, I can't say enough about the power and ease there is using this mower. It exceeded my expectations, I just need 2 nuts and 2 bolts to get back into my mowing routine.

I needed a new mower for a small area ,so I gave the battery powered mower a shot.I have used it 3 times and it can mow the space I needed on one charge....I would say about 40-45 minutes worth. It does a great job in terms of cutting. The self propelled aspect is great...I cannot keep up when it is on high.It takes a little getting used to when pulling the mower backwards as it must first disengage. It is quiet and lightweight..Overall,I like my purchase.

This is a perfect lawnmower for an old woman like me. LOL. Easy to use and I can mow the back yard and front yard on one battery charge pretty quickly. It is self propelled and I don’t have to push it. No messy gas to deal with either. I even have time to make myself a cold margarita after I finish. I am very happy with my purchase. Easy storage. I Had to replace my Honda mower after 20 yrs. Got this Greenworks battery powered mower on a Deal of the Day for $399. The mower is so well designed and depending on how big the yard is and how much you use the self propelled unit and can finish it on one charged battery. The mower is so easy to push that I sometimes only use the self propelled unit only 40% of the time, just to get a little exercise, besides just walking behind it. I just turn 70 yrs old so exercise is important to keep moving. I figured if the battery runs out, I can start on weed eating the area I just mowed, while the battery does it’s quick charge or take a 20 min break which showed give me enough charge to finish. It is so much easier to use (no gas, no oil, no load exhaust, no pulling a rope to get it started.) that the battery is such a welcome change when going out to mow. This mower almost makes it fun to mow because it is so much less loud and so much lighter to push, even though it has a nice sturdy metal deck. The handle is very easy to fold down and store the unit upright against a wall. If you are worried about a battery mower, rest assured you will love this mower for how well it starts, cuts and stores away.

I’ve mowed my lawn 4 x times since purchasing this mower and I am very impressed. Not having to worry about gas anymore for my lawn mower is a huge plus. The power is plentiful, it’s relatively light (my 11 year old son has no problem driving this mower) and I can mow my entire lawn on one charge. I should point out I have a small yard, but even if my yard were bigger I would just get another battery to switch out when the first died. I’m impressed. Very happy with this purchase. The way it folds up to store is a really nice benefit too as it takes up very little space.

Surprised by how long battery lasted. It takes me 45 minutes to cut the grass and I thought this might not make it to our backyard, but surprisingly, it lasted and still had 2 bars left on battery once completed. Mower works well. Not loud and nice to not breathe in any fumes.

Better For Smaller Yards

The Greenworks 80-Volt 21-Inch Self-propelled Lawn Mower is one of the higher-powered Greenworks mowers currently available. I gave this mower a shot to see if I could replace my 8-year old gas-powered Toro mower. My experience wasn’t perfect as I am super-picky about my yard and yard equipment. Overall, I think that this mower may work well for most folks with smaller yards.
Contents, Assembly, and Adjustments
Everything arrived in one box. It is a little heavy (60 pounds), so you should take this in account since you will need to lift the mower out of the box.
There aren’t too many pieces: collection bag, side chute, battery, charger, screws for the handle, and the main assembly. Most everything else was preassembled. The mulch plug and safety key were in their installed locations prior to shipping.
Assembly wasn’t very difficult. First, you’ll want to charge the battery. This takes about an hour to reach a full charge. While that’s charging you can assemble the rest. The handles are already attached, so you raise them up until they snap into place. There’s a bunch of protective plastic on the handles to remove. Insert the upper handle into the lower handle and screw it in. You’ll need a thicker Phillips head screw driver for this. Install the charged battery and you are finished.
There are two height levels for the handles. Just pick the one that works better for you. To adjust the cutting height simply move the handle at the wheel to the rear to select a higher cut or toward the front for a lower cut. Both of the adjustments were super-easy (unlike my current mower).
Storing the mower isn’t difficult. You can fold down the handles and turn the mower upright to take up less room. This is one benefit to having a mower without gas or oil.

Conditions Tested and Current Mower Info
When testing and comparing a lawnmower, there are several external variables that can affect your performance. For a reference, I will give some conditions and comparison information about my yard conditions and what I am used to with my current lawnmower.
Yard Conditions – My lawn is usually kept mowed at a tall setting, around 4” to promote root shading. The grass is thick and is made of a blend of different grass types. Weeds are kept to a minimum (as possible). On the days tested our area had been under drought conditions for the month, so the grass was very dry, thinner than usual, and starting to brown some. My lot size is around 9200 SF (1/5 acre).
Mower – I have used the same mid-level walk-behind Toro gas mower for the past 8 years. It has a powerful engine, and doesn’t bog down under many conditions (maybe extremely tall grass or wet conditions). It has the same mulching, side discharge, and bagging options as the Greenworks mower.
Power / Charge
One of my biggest concerns was “Am I going to be able to mow my entire yard before the battery dies?” The answer was just barely. There are 4 bars shown on the battery indicator. I mowed my front and side yards with 3 of 4 power bars left. I was able to finish the rest, but I could not start the mower to return it to the garage. So, this electric mower will barely cover my 9200 SF lot.
For comparison to the gas mower, I usually am close to using the full tank of gas.
I was a little disappointed with the life of the battery. The other disappointment is that there is only one battery with this mower. If it dies, I have to stop mowing altogether. I would like to see this mower come with a second battery.
Cut Quality
I am very picky about how my yard looks. I expect a nice even cut without “stragglers” or “shark fins” when I am finished. Under the dry conditions that we had, this should be an easy task for any mower.
What I found with the Greenworks mower was that the cut was not as good as what I am used to. It did an okay job, but not a great job. There were both some “stragglers” and “shark fins”. I could correlate it to the use of the walk-behind setting. If I used the walk-behind feature, the mower seemed to mow “higher”. I could push-mow the same stripe again (with the walk behind turned off) and noticed that it mowed lower and more effectively.
Cutting power itself is another topic. Switching to the electric mower was very different than the gas mower. It did not feel as powerful (think moped vs motorcycle), but the end result was somewhat similar. For the most part, the electric mower did not sound like it struggled. Only when I got to some taller grass did I notice it having a hard time. I tried to see if switching from mulching to side discharge would alleviate this, but it didn’t really have an effect. What the Greenworks mower struggled with, my gas mower wouldn’t have much trouble passing over.
Walk-Behind
There is an optional walk-behind feature on the mower. If you want to push-mow and not use this feature, you can. It may save some battery life doing so. To use the walk-behind feature you engage a second lever behind the main handle. If you don’t want to use it, you can just not squeeze the handle and push the mower around.
The walk-behind feature has a speed control. There’s a lever that you can adjust left to right (turtle to hare) to increase or slow the speed of the walk-behind. If I used it, I selected the right half (faster side) due to my walking stride. The fastest setting can be a little uncomfortable in certain conditions.
Control with the walk-behind feature was a little difficult. The feature is either on or off. There’s no transition. With my Toro, the walk behind speed is tied to me pushing down the bar. Push down further, it goes faster. If I want to slow up, ease back on the bar. The Greenworks mower is either engaged or not. If I get to the fence edge or street, I have to let the lever go or I will hit the fence or get pulled into the street. It takes some getting used to.
The walk-behind feature does work, but it could use some refining. I’d like to see this be a little more intuitive, and not as much of an all or nothing feature.
Other Impressions
The Greenworks mower is very different than the gas-powered Toro that I have been using for years. Here are a few other points that I’d like to mention.
The build quality of the deck seems good. It’s metal, not plastic like some other electric mowers.
I like the upright storage feature.
No gas, oil, filters, or spark plugs to maintain. If you have a hard time remembering to maintain things, this mower may be a much easier option than the gas-powered.
The tires are 10” on the back and 8” at the front. The larger tires seem to make pushing easier.
The engine is much quieter than my gas mower. My ears like that, and my neighbors do too.
The push-button start is easier than pulling the cord on the gas mower.
Overall, I think that this mower may be a good option for most people with smaller yards. I highlighted a few things above that didn’t meet my expectations, but like I said, I am really picky when it comes to this type of product. Not having so much equipment maintenance is a great. I enjoy how quiet it is. Things such as battery life, having one battery, cut quality, and walk-behind implementation could all be better. The easiest upgrade that Greenworks could make is simply including a second battery with this mower. With most people that I have talked to, the power/charge is the number one concern. I am giving this electric mower 3.5 stars officially. Since I cannot select a half-star option I am dropping it down to 3 stars.

I am a 58 year old female who assembled my 80 volt Greenworks mower, charged, and cut my entire lawn in the same afternoon! The instructions were easy to understand and I had it all put together in a matter of minutes. Taking off the protective plastic was the hardest part. Initial charging was faster than anticipated because the battery came with a charge. The mower was easy to use and the self-propel was strong, especially up hills. The mower cut my grass evenly and my lawn looked great! I was proud to show off my new mower to my neighbor. I actually had fun cutting my grass! Best part is the price was good and I feel I got a great deal. I’ve since bought a 80 volt Greenworks hedger and I cant wait to try it!

I bought this mower on sale with a free second 2A battery. I have a standard 1/4 acre lot in a subdivision. It doesn’t cut the entire lot on one battery. I was able to pick up a second battery 2ah which allows me to cut the whole yard using both. It’s quieter than a gas mower, easy to assemble, start, and store. It folds in half and stands upright which is a great feature! It comes with a bagger, side chute, and a mulcher chute blocker. The handle has 2 height locations, one for taller people and one for shorter. I was able to change the height of the cut with one lever instead of individually adjusting the front and back wheels which is nice. Overall I would recommend this mower if you have a small yard and you want to free up some space in the garage, as well as preform less maintenance on your mower.

Starting off, we were in the market for an electric mower because our push gas mower was about eight years old, and after a few years of maintenance, we decided it was better to get something a bit more "green" and wouldn't require oil drainage at the end of each season before storage.
These electric mowers are great! The added self-propelled system is a nice added bonus, especially when this model is on sale. It is easy to steer and does not require much assistance, even when mowing uphill. My entire end-unit townhome lot and my neighbor's yard can be mowed on a single charge without a problem. This mower holds a charge well, the battery charges quickly for the size, and the mower itself is easy to put together out of the box.

Though I'm a petrol head with cars, ICE mowers are very inconvenient. I'm always outta gas when i need to mow, requiring a trip to the pump. ICE mowers ate loud, and require pil, plugs, filrers, etc. maintenance time i could spend wrenching on cars. The mower fixes it all. Charges quickly enough, is light enough to store hanging on the wall and is so very much quieter. It mows great and kicks up the power in the thicker grass. The self-propelled feature could use some work, as the accle and deceleration curves feel odd. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again.
