I use H&R Block software every year. I only import the previous year's data, update the numbers, and I'm done. I use the free state download to do state return. However, I go to state's site to e-file for free.

Supposedly it comes with a link to download the software for those of us who don’t have computers with CD drives. However the link they provided was dead! I went to the website to see if they had a link to download. However the only way to download the software from the site is to buy it. But I already paid for it!!! The phone support was able to provide me the proper link to download the software without paying again but I shouldn’t have had to go through that. Once I got the software installed it worked fine. It’s tax software so what can you say about it. It did my taxes!!

I've always used H&R Block for taxes to my satisfaction. This year the program closes intermittently when I try to edit entries. A definite flaw.

My wife does our taxes usually by hand. This was the first time she used a software to do our taxes. We apply SE so at first, it was a little difficult but she figured it out.

I've used both of the current leading tax packages over the years and have found that H&R Block Premium is a sweet spot for me. The 2019 version is no exception and generally does a solid job walking through the myriad of questions and dependencies that one needs to deal with to file even a relatively simple tax return these days. This Premium package comes with some additional modules to help handle rental real estate and includes one state tax package as a download at no additional charge. Pros: - Easy to use interview format - State package included at no additional charge - Software automatically keeps state and federal returns synchronized - Robust federal e-file option is included in the price - Lots of online reference and access to H&R Block experts if you need tax advice. Cons: - State e-file is an additional charge - Some state specific items could be handled better - Some interview forms assume a higher level of knowledge about the tax issues being covered and amount to long lists of amounts to enter if applicable. In fairness, most of these items are rarely needed. H&R Block adopts the now standard interface model of walking the user through a guided interview. As you answer each set of questions, the program determines which forms are required and fills them in for you, helping to ensure that math is correct and that you don't inadvertently omit a required backup form. In general I think this approach works well and helps to triage the amount of information you need to provide to only the relevant items. Some of the less common items have much less hand holding in the interview, amounting to long lists of numbers to fill in if applicable. In general, these items are things of which you would probably be aware should they apply, but it would still be nice to see Block develop this a little further. I've used the included rental real estate module for several years now and appreciate the way it correctly handles segmenting income and expenses for the rental along with a depreciation schedule which correctly tracks improvements to your rental over the years and applies the correct depreciation calculations for each new improvement or upgrade you make. It also does a good job of helping you understand your options at each stage. Less helpful is the integration with the state package, which while generally very solid falls down a little in the rental real estate section. For several years I've had to manually override entries on the state forms as my state requires different depreciation schedules than those used for federal returns. To its credit, the program does flag these differences, but it does not calculate them for you or even provide the form required to do so. That said, this issue is unlikely to be a concern for most taxpayers. The above mentioned depreciation issues aside, H&R Block does do a good job keeping the federal and state returns in sync as you go and also helps to ensure that you receive the best state specific deductions and advice along the way. Fortunately, I've never needed the H&R Block audit support, but its good to know that the software output is backed by support from a company that specializes in tax matters. Overall, this is a solid package. It has seen relatively little enhancement over the years from an interface perspective, but in my experience the results are reliable and the H&R Block support provides some additional peace of mind.

I have used H & R Block Deluxe version since 2016, when I switched from Turbo Tax (used from 2008 to 2015) due to Turbo Tax moving some investment components to a pricier version, which I felt was not worth the added cost. I have been very happy with H & R Block over the years but I have run into one or two issues where it didn’t work correctly but there was always an update that fixed the problem. I never felt the need to use this Premium version but since I was afforded this opportunity, I wanted to compare it to the Deluxe (which I had already purchased and filled out). Both came out with exactly the same figures for federal and state (AZ) While this Premium version worked great it was overkill for me but would highly recommend if you are self-employed or have rental property. Once software is installed you just start it and it will walk you thru authorizing it, etc. Since I had used H & R block previously it was easy to import the prior year’s tax info. When I switched from Turbo Tax 2016 it also imported my TT tax info from prior year with no issues – so if you are looking to switch it should be pretty painless. You can have the software import your W-2’s and financial info – which I have tried in prior years with varying degrees of success. I have found that just typing in manually works better for me. The software walks you thru every part of the tax form – asking you questions as you go as to what may or may not apply to you. While this can get tedious it has made me remember some things I had forgotten about to be included. It will give you a running total of your federal tax amount as you fill out the forms. Once completed it will go over everything and highlight any areas of concern that may need more info. Once that is all good it will run a “test” as to completeness and your audit chances. Once all is good it will ask you to indicate your state to be downloaded and once selected/installed it walks you thru your states return in same fashion as federal. Once state is completed it runs one more completeness and audit check. If all is good you have the option to e-file federal and/or state. What you may not be aware of if you have never e-filled before, is you can pick the date to pay if you owe. If you file in February you can set a date for funds to come directly from your account anytime from then until 4/15. Overall, I would recommend H & R Block software especially in a price comparison with competitor options. Just be sure you get the version that fits your financial needs.

Compared to other retailers, the price was right. I always compare prices. Best Buy always had a good price.

Best tax software available, very easy to use, highly recommend this brand
