I have been using H&R Block tax preparation software for years and have been very pleased.

This is solid, reliable tax software that works as well as the web based sites I have used, with more privacy and less pushy sales tactic / advertisements for upgrades or other products. The software has a few quirks and I would avoid using some of the import tools (photo capture), but entering the data manually is pretty easy and the software walks you through each area. Pros - Local storage (privacy). Backup files can be stored on a flash drive or Google drive. - You don't need a user name for every return you file and passwords are optional. - Software is reusable making it a better value (with 5 free e-files). - Welcome screen previews pending tax code and software updates that may impact you and tells you when to expected the next update. - Tips and guided forms were helpful and thorough. - I felt that the premium software really focused on exploring and explaining deductions for small business owners and independent contractors. - Included in-person audit assistance when you e-file is reassuring. - Importing from a TurboTax .Tax file was easy and transferred 95% of last year's data. Things To Consider -Before filing you can print your return, but to just see it as a PDF is harder than it should be (you can you use the File Menu>Save As PDF... or download a third part PDF print driver provided HR Block). -E-File Status Check gave me an error on 2-3 separate occasions and then worked after refreshing - Photo Import / PDF Import Tools are slow and there was a significant amount of missing or improperly formatted data - Some options in the program are actually just short cuts or redirects to a website that opens in a new window -You can't back up your return file to the MyBlock website (but it is cool that you can store receipts and other documents on the website for audits or later use)

I wish this could also be used on all of my computers but it’s the best.

One of us is a member of the clergy and this software doesn't compute things correctly. This happened last year, too. I went to H and R Block Office this year and got things done right! If you are NOT self-employed, the lesser version would work fine, though.

It has been a while since I have used any tax software in the age of most things being available online through a website. Because of this, it was nice to conduct this review for the H&R Block Premium + Efile + State software. Getting directly to the point, tax season has just started and I feel the software is not yet complete as they are adding forms / interview questions as they are released. You might not want to file quickly if you have complex tax situations. If you have a simple 1040 you are probably good to go as of time of writing at the end of January. Installation: I installed the software on both my MacBook Pro and my Alienware desktop. I ultimately completed my taxes on the MacBook but the both versions of software for Mac and PC appeared to be fairly identical. Installation was a breeze on both platforms with your standard installation methods. I quickly received an update at time of installation and one toward the end of January. There is another expected update mid February on the Mac according to the software. Use: The basic interview questions are mainly straightforward. Enter your personnel info, enter your income documents, enter your mortgage info, etc. There were a few snags I noticed. I feel most of these issues come from doing my taxes early in the year but they are worth noting. -First, not all the interviews appear to be complete. For example, as of this date in late Jan, there is an interview question asking if you have held any crypto currency through the year. If you answer yes you should be directed toward an interview to fill out a Schedule D form to claim the holdings but it does not exist in the software. I reached out to the support page and it appears that it might come in the February update. If you wish to claim crypto currency now, you would have to manually fill out the form which kind of negates the purpose of having the software to simplify things. -Next, this is not so much the fault of the software but as of time of righting, there are a lot of forms unavailable at the moment. For example, interest forms and important from the employer or bank directly since most of these agencies do not make them available until middle February. -Last, the software does not appear to have a lot of baked in help options. Chatting with support is easy enough but chatting with a tax pro is not included with the software unless you pay another fee. There is a search feature to look up common topics but I had more success looking it up on the website instead. Getting around the software is easy enough with tabbed formats for every section. Federal and State are both very similar and filing taxes is extremely easy with very direct questions. There is a planning tab which helps you determine your withholdings for the 2020 tax year so this might come in handy for some. The interface is basic but useful. I noticed on my MacBook Pro 15 that the text is a little blurry, as if the designers did not plan for high DPI screens. It is not a huge deal but noticeable if you are looking for it. Summary: In all, the software is good. Most of the faults are not directly the fault of H&R Block but I highly advise waiting until the end of February to use this software if you have investments and cryptocurrency. It works well and is stable. I only take away points due to lack of polish. I think next year I will likely revert back to web interface tax software but if you have a need for offline use, this is a great option.

The H&R Block name has been around since the mid 50's , and is a common household name when people talk about taxes. They have always been on the forefront of all the current federal and state income tax laws. The company has been trying to make it just as easy to do your own taxes at home, as it would be for you to stop into one of their many locations available during tax seasons.  This year's program is very easy to navigate on your own, if you have some tax prep experience. It took me approximately 10 to 30 minutes per person to run through the software and finish both Federal and State taxes. I did simple returns (single, no dependentants, regular W-2) in about 10mins. Head of household with dependents in 20 to 30 mis, and self employed returns in 30 to 45mins.  The program is pretty self explanatory, and even includes "GUIDED" help in all the tricky areas, and quick explanation links for every question. It really does a good job at relieving the stress factor of filing your own taxes, plus they have an accuracy check, that runs at the end of the federal and state forms, to see if you accidentally entered something that doesn't make sense, or inaccurately based on your other entries. The program lets you import important documents like W-2's by either pulling them electronically from your employer's Federal database( not all companies use this), or by dragging a .pdf file into the app, or even by taking a picture with your smartphone. The smartphone entry is pretty neat and painless, when selecting this option in the program, it asks you for your phone number. It then sends you a text, with a link for the process. after you click the link, your camera opens up, and you take a pic of the form. (try to be as close, and in focus as possible), the picture is processed by H&R Block's online software, and then is automatically entered into the program on your computer. It's that simple. Of course, you will have to verify all the entries to make sure everything was processed correctly, but quite a convenient trick. Other documents can be imported by the drag and drop feature, or through manual entries.  Most everything you need to do in this program is pretty easy and explained along the way. However, there are exceptions to every rule, and if you feel you need a more detailed response to anything, they still have you covered. The program has a Help Center where you can search a database for tax questions, or you can buy chat support by a professional tax advisor for the current tax year at $29.99, with unlimited questions. either way they have you covered. This program allows you to file both Federal and State taxes through e-file or printed forms, for 5 individual returns, with no additional fees. The H&R Block programs have been saving me time and money for years, and they even guarantee a maximum refund using their program and free audit representation if needed.

Tax season can feel like a burden. Having an accountant or preparer can make a huge difference, but definitely hits the wallet significantly. A good tax software is an option that can supplement having a preparer. H&R Block offers a great opportunity to get a preparer’s expertise and touch while doing your own taxes. Installation is simple and follows standard fare, and the software functions smoothly. As someone who has used tax preparation software often, I find the H&R Block software to pretty much follow suit. It guides you through the preparation process using a guided questionnaire, capturing your data and seamlessly preparing the tax return. When you run into the more wordy line items on your return, H&R Block provides detailed explanations to bring clarity and somewhat educate the user. The state return incurred an additional cost, serving as the only surprise during use. I recommend H&R Block tax prep software for simple and somewhat complex returns. It’s very easy to use and gives a sense of confidence in the preparation process.

program did not work. H&R Block rep said to return it to the store. But best buy management accuse me of being dishonest

States that it works for inputting Schedule K-1 information. However, it says on the K-1 input screen that it does not support K-1 entry. In reality, you can input K-1 information but not all of it. Had to research of lot of IRS documents to figure out what needed to be manually entered. Also, there was no screen for entering K-1 information for the AL state return. Had to research state documents to figure out what information to enter manually. Very disappointing.

I've used several tax software packages over the years and have settled on H&R as the best. It is easy to use, imports data from various sources and makes your return accurate with the piece of mind that you are taking advantage of any tax benefits due.
