Doesn't even do this series justice. I have no idea how this passed for network television. There's full blown mutilation in this show, blood splatters nearly every ten minutes, so much gore and dismembered body parts. Ironic because not one nipple or full on buttocks shot was OKed by Standards and Practices. And yet, it's gorgeous. The cinematography and direction of this show is something I've yet to see in a series. Think House and True Detective, on speed. OK, the good first. Beautiful, on point, eye popping, deeply thought out, tons of foreshadowing. This season has a clear direction and it doesn't dither one minute. We watch several characters and their decent into the dark side. Obviously Hannibal is going to be the character most hate to love (and Mads delivers in spades), but the true breakout character is Hugh Graham (played by Hugh Dancy). The picture pops on Blu-ray, the sound is perfect, voices are clear, the menu and it's sounds are subtle and spot on. Every time you press OK on the remote, a single deep heartbeat bass thump pulses, gloriously! The music is scored perfectly for the series, and there's an extensive special features vignette of the composer, along with the great deal of special FX added to Hannibal. Hannibal must have cost an absolute fortune to make because the quality is unreal for network television. Now the Bad. It can get a little too dramatic. We see Will fight the decent and reality all through out the season. We see Hannibal fight his own personal demons, he is not impervious to his actions or the actions of others. And we see Graham's boss Jack Crawford (good ol' Lawrence Fishburne) get overwhelmed with everybody else around him stumbling on their inner demons. The result is a lot of exposition and overly done dramatic dialogues which somehow manage to stay mellow dramatic at the same time. Tempers, outside of Fishburne's character Agent Crawford, rarely elevate. Speaking of dialogue, this show commands your full attention. It's one of those shows, where previous instances dictate what happens next. It is not a show that you can flip on and just watch whenever. Jump ahead one episode, and suddenly flashbacks and sequences that you haven't witness will completely spoil what happens next. In short, it's a marathon show. Now the Ugly. People are dying left and right. This is a fault a lot of series stumble into; the type of series it is winds-up being over-dominates what occurs throughout it's run. In an analogy with House, medical issues pop-up more than they would in real life. In Hannibal, people die left and right, there one minute, dead the next. The problem with this is that it desensitizes ACTUAL death in the show. The result is characters who become mellow dramatic when any character suddenly disappears from the series. Also, this series is NOT a mood elevator. It will leave you emotionally drained due to the gore, the darkness, the depressing nature of what's happening to the characters, and the overall mood of the series. The few characters who are comic relief see very little screen time, and even when they're on it's a little too campy to make up for the large amounts of carnage just witnessed. Like True Detective and other darker series, do not watch when you want a feel good heart warming sensation. Further exasperating this is that you need to remember what previously happened, which means you'll be watching A LOT of horror, for long stretches of time (each episode in the 1st season is ~45 minutes). That's a lot of commitment for something very dark, with very little humor, and commands a lot of time and attention. The payoff is one of the best television series to grace the airwaves since Twin Peaks. Highly recommended, but you need to be in the right mindset for viewings.

Brilliantly done with a cast of characters whose acting talents are far superior to nearly every other on network television. You cannot surpass the level of depth of character development, the writing, where as they discuss real theories of psychology; build up, and character development between Will Graham and Dr. Lecter is unlike anything else on television and cannot be done with a movie. Eventually we will view shows like this one not to be just a show, but rather a series of movies, each telling a story, where at one point a 2 hour movie will not be enough anymore to satisfy our palate for something as savory as this series. Die hard horror fans will love the special effects and gore. This will become a classic.

Ok. I wanted to hate this! A TV show after the movie has been done, always felt like a very bad idea to me. I must admit, this surprised me greatly. From the very first episode, I was shooting it straight into the vein! To compete with films, TV has really stepped up its game and this is a great example. From the acting, sets and cinematography, this is a new standard for not only cable, but commercial TV. This all takes place before the "Hannibal" films, including the not much seen, "Manhunter" film. This series fills in a lot of un-answered questions if you haven't read the book(s). Oh, and by the way, season 2 is even better. Nothing like dinner with a friend (he,he,he!) and a couple of guests for existential conversation!

This is one of the best shows on TV. Great cast & writing. The special effects are the best there is. This is not a series for children. This is NOT a family show. It is for adults period. I have heard lame parents complain that the series is not family friendly... DUH!!!! It is Hannibal! It is not a show about rainbows and unicorns. This is strictly adult TV. Intelligent, well developed stories and characters. It is a series that knows what it is and exceeds audience members expectations. If you like shiny vampire TV this also may not be for you, because the characters aren't bed hopping blood suckers. Hannibal's characters are actually interesting and they actually have depth.

Initially when I heard that they were doing a serialized Hannibal series, my first thought was 'This is going to be horrible'! But i was far from right. This series is great! Highly recommend this series to anyone! Trust me its worth it. I am all in wait for the second season to he released on blu-ray as well. Ive told many people they need to watch this series, but it seems that not to many people really want to give it a chance. Its a series that you need to watch from the first episode and stick with it all the way through, because they keep building stuff up and breaking it down as they go.

One of the best shows to come out in recent years, Hannibal is incredibly well written with a cast that fill the roles beautifully. Those familiar with the Hannibal universe should recognize the characters Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham who the show revolves around. Their relationship which we first saw in Manhunter followed by the remake Red Dragon was certainly interesting, but the series Hannibal places us there as the two come together and lets us see the relationship bloom. Overall Hannibal is a fantastic show that captivates from the beginning.

Hannibal (NBC) manages to take an established icon of pop culture and recreate it in a way that makes it its own, rather than trying to duplicate/supplant the movie "The Silence of the Lambs." It manages to perform its own "riff" so to speak on the characters from the books and do so in an originally unsettling way, visually and characterization-wise. Mikkelsen puts his own chilling spin on the Lecter character, while Dancy manages to create a sympathetic yet eccentric lead. Also, food has never been so sexy.

One of the best shows ever based on one of the most infamous fictional character of all time. Like a reverse super hero, Hannibal Lecter plays a mild mannered criminal psychologist in the light but his darker side has a craving for something most of us would not even to think have on the a menu. Hannibal is approached by the FBI to assist with solving grizzly murders. Some of which Hannibal may or may not have been involved with. A bloody, intense and very beautiful show.

I was aware that there was a network show regarding Hannibal Lecter. I didn't check the show out until Black Friday, when the first season on Blu-Ray was available for $4.99 at Best Buy. What a great purchase. Mads Mikkelsen adds to the legacy set forth by Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins, who played Hannibal Lector before him. Mikkelsen is charming but very subtle and quiet. We see Lecter as a master puppeteer, manipulating all of those around him. Hugh Dancy as a vulnerable, tormented Will Graham, is the perfect complement to Mikkelsen's conniving Lector. Laurence Fishburne as the FBI boss, Jack Crawford, does a fantastic job as both mentor and manipulator of Will. I definitely recommend this series to any Lector fans out there.

What a pleasant surprise this show turned out to be! Not for those with short attention spans or who doze off if there's extended points of conversation coming from the TV! Yes there's parts that are a little more fast-paced and all but I like to call this a more "sophisticated" Dexter (btw Dexter is my all-time favorite show). DVD comes with an UV code too!

I was skeptical when I heard that NBC was going to do a series based on Hannibal. First, how do you top Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs. Second, NBC is not cable TV. After much coaxing I started the series with an open mind. This is the best show on tv, period! How they get away with what they do on NBC is nothing short of a miracle. I would match this with the best shows on AMC, HBO and FX. For $20 it's a steal. Looking forward to Season 3!

Madds Milkenson is a terrific actor, here he plays one of cinemas all time bad guys. Starting out way before Silence Of the Lambs this season tells how Will Grahme comes to rely on and befriend the man he will eventually hunt down and capture. Lauren e Fishburne plays Grahme boss to perfection. Seeing as this show has also been cancelled having the blu rays on hand will easend the pain of losing another great show.

Hannibal season 1 is amazing. The plot, the cinematography, the acting...there isn't any weak spots in this show. It is highly recommended that a person be in a good head space; watching this show can be triggering to those who live with mental illness. There is also blood, some violence, and of course, Hannibal eating choice bits of his victims. On the other hand, there is Will's dogs. Winston! Enjoy this amazing series.

Like anything, it all depends on preference. I'm a horror and suspense lover and this series does not disappoint!! I also love the fact that it came at such a great price and a HUGE plus for me was the Ultraviolet copy of the entire season!! Also the order online and pick up in store always makes it so easy to get what you wanted at your local store right when you get there!! Thanks!!

What an amazing debut season--I don't think anyone was expecting the kind of thrills and excitement this show delivered on a consistent basis. Everything here is exemplary--the cinematography is stunning, the design is breathtaking, and the acting is universal top-notch. I highly recommend this series--believe me, it's so much better than even I was expecting.

I have almost finished watching this series and overall I will say that I like it. I am a huge fan of most things to do with Silence of the Lambs. I have read all of the books, and own of the movies so I really thought I would like this. It may seem strange, considering the original subject matter, but I find this series to be very dark. Dark, grisly murders, dark sets, on and on. I don't really feel the same about the movies. That being said, it is a quality show and considering the legacy Anthony Hopkins has for the character, I feel that this was a good effort.

Just trust me and buy this (and Season Two and Three). This series is incredible. The cinematography, the makeup effects, the acting, and everything else about this show is top notch. It's very close to the Thomas Harris novels, while adding its own unique twists and new ideas to the storyline. You will love it!
