The blu-ray provides an excellent picture and sound. Paul Newman plays the title role as private detective Harper. He is hired by Lauren Bacall to find her rich husband. This movie has several well known supporting characters including Robert Wagner and Shelley Winters. It is fun to watch Harper try to figure out exactly what is going on and who the villains are.

A fantastic private eye story filled with a who’s who of film and television stars. Paul Newman leads the way with his charisma on full display.

The genius of The Big Sleep (1946) is that it provides its audience so much joy following Humphrey Bogart for two hours as private detective Philip Marlowe that any shortcomings of its overly intricate plot are immediately forgotten. With that in mind, Paul Newman brings you two hours as private investigator Lew Harper. His journey is much like that of Bogie twenty years earlier, crossing paths with his fair share of beautiful women and a quirky rogue's gallery of suspects along the way. And, as with The Big Sleep, good luck deciphering (or even remembering) some of the plot intricacies as the credits roll in front of your smiling face. Harper's incredible excess of charm can cross the border into becoming laborious at times, making the film potentially hard to love for some, but almost impossible not to like. DVD special features are scant but include a wonderfully interesting audio commentary with writer William Goldman.
