I had moved and was having issues getting cable and internet hooked up, for like two months, so on Black Friday last year I went to Best Buy and bought a bunch of movies to keep myself entertained (I’d switched to digital over the years, and not having internet meant I couldn’t watch any of them). I picked out some of my favorite movies and made it through the dark times lol.

A classic crime drama with an engaging script and an excellent cast.
The digital code redeems for 4K with iTunes off and on when iTunes is selling the film in 4K. Perhaps some rights/contracts disputes are in play, so if you wait until you see you can purchase Heat in 4K on iTunes, then the code from this Blu-ray will redeem on iTunes for the 4K version of the film.

Okay, Heat (as a movie) is simply amazing. If you're reading this review and you haven't watched the movie yet, just do it any way you can! Pacino vs De Niro is truly a sight to see, and the allstar ensemble cast is stellar. But I'm not here to review the movie, I'm going to review this particular bluray release of the movie. So without further ado...
The long (and somewhat pretentious) superlative for this version, the "Director's Definitive Edition", is so named because it is a a new transfer and restoration supervised by the director himself. If you can't tell by the cover, Mann likes to use darkness to great effect in his films, and Heat is no different. This new transfer brings out many details (particularly in those dark night scenes) which were lost in previous releases and it looks amazing. Unless they do a new transfer for a 4K UHD release, I don't see how they could get much more out of the original film on which this was recorded. The sound is likewise supposedly an upgrade from the previous bluray release, with DTS-HD Master Audio in 5.1 in this new version; however, I couldn't tell a difference as my receiver cannot decode DTS, so I got the same standard 5.1 and it still sounded great. Dialog was clear and easily intelligible, with sound effects (gunfire!) spanning all the surround space nicely. As for extras, this is actually a 2-disc set: the first disc contains the movie with an optional commentary from the director (Michael Mann) and the second disc contains a bunch of extras, including a couple panels and a "making of" featurette -- those three features alone total more than two-and-a-half hours! And some of these extras have not been released previously, so that's an extra bonus.
When taking into account all of the above, I can honestly say that "Heat, the Director's Definitive Edition" is definitely one bluray release which lives up to it's name!

HEAT is a fantastic film.
Directed by Michael Mann and starring 2 of the most influential and recognized actors of this century (Pacino and DeNiro) locked in conflict, on opposite sides of the law.
Pacino is a hardened detective.
DeNiro is the leader of a professional heist crew, being pursued by him.
That's all you need to know.
Go watch this film NOW.

Heat is a great movie featuring two icons of cinema (Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro) in a rare collaboration. Both actors have had disappointing performances and perhaps poor choices over the past two decades, including another collaboration in "Righeous Kill" but their performances in Heat are what I would like to remember them for.

This is said to be the definitive edition. The pace seems to have picked up from the theatrical - although there is still that long airport scene that could have been shortened. Pacino is near over-the-top, and a lot of fun to watch. the film as a whole is a great crime thriller and has risen to cult status. Worth adding to the library.

Have to say after purchasing this 1995 crime drama on blu-Ray this is one that keeps you watching till the end just have to make sure either you live out in the sticks or not watch this after 9pm at good volume because of the sounds of gunfire. Overall great movie and one to have for your home video collection.

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro finally share the same screen in this classic crime film from writer and director Michael Mann. The movie is an almost perfect game of cat and mouse as a dedicated cop and a career thief find themselves on a collision course that could only ever end with one of them as the victor!

I rate it as Mann's best. It's his most kinetic, vibrant and brilliant film. I just goes to show how powerful a simple, straight story can be. This is a film about men - strong men - and the supporting role that he women of the film have on them for better or worse. Take Pacino as good cop Vincent Hanna: one of the most intense characterizations of the tragic hero that I have ever witnessed, as he laments the demise of his third marriage to a looser wife. A fact which he discusses with his archnemesis (De Niro) in what history will regard as one of the most frenetic scenes in the history of film. The dialogue in this scene (at the very end of the first tape, if you own the VHS version) sets up the last half of the film beautifully, as our two rivals come to the joint realization that they have no hand in choosing the paths that will lead them to their ultimate confrontation: their very natures so define their respective actions that any attempt to do otherwise would simply be a waste of time. While I have heard others say that Heat drags in places, I will concede that there are moments in the film that require more than the cursory attention. There are poignant developments of character in Heat that many would casually disregard. I am thinking of the interaction between the ex-con who finds conditional employment in a diner with an opportunistic scum of a boss, and whose girlfriend is so proud of him for swallowing his pride and not simply giving the crum a good pummeling. But there is a catharsis that I felt for that same ex-con when De Niro's character presents him with the opportunity to take just one more score, for old time's sake. Who doesn't feel for this guy - this minor character in a film with big-time heavyweights who gets to shine for a few brief moments. That's what Heat is really: a series of brief moments, some touching, others traumatic, and still others incredibly horrifying in the feelings that they inspire in the romantic who, like me sees not black or white portrayals of protagonist and villain, but a montage of grays that combine to create a vivid spectrum of film characterization that could not be found in hundreds of films combined. One of my five favorite films of all time, Heat is a cinematic banquet of intense imagery and pulse-pounding action.

This is a great film! This movie has a little bit of everything and a ton of action. A bit of romance, comedy, mystery, and of course action! This movie gives a bad guy in-depth perspective and the good guy in-depth perspective as well! Great film overall; and my personal favorite of all time!

. An intense horror movie! Redefines the genre by delivering a solid plot with a scary lead actor and multiple chilling moments. A little bit of pacing issues could've been handled well but the end takes the viewer by surprise. Christian Bale is effective. I first saw him as Batman and now as Bateman...His performance is outstanding! It's hard to decide which genre it actually comes under because it blends multiple genres: horror, drama, crime, thriller etc. But I would classify it as horror because even without the chills, the lead character still is pretty menacing.

The SOUNDS -- Enjoy

The overwhelming draw, IMHO, is the tempo beat and sounds of the climatic gunfight. The beat is crisp, the gunshots sharp, explosive, authentic. DTS-HD 5.1 which some argue is better than Dolby Digital because of its higher bit rate. Whatever. The sound is excellent. Enjoy.
