Wow!! I remember seeing parts of this as a kid and had no odea what was really going on lol. Seeing it on it's entirety as an adult I have a clear understanding of whats happening. This is a very well made "adult type" animated movie with beautiful animation. Writing is goid and the acting, though a bit corny in some scenes is still really good. A very nice flick to watch and i recommend it.

Based on the cult magazine of the same name, HEAVY METAL is a an animated anthology of 8 stories featuring characters from the not-for-children comic magazine. From producer Ivan Reitman, this animated film is every teenage boy's dream (well, from the 80's anyway) with sci-fi action, violence, and girls, girls, girls. Bored with Star Wars? Cartoons aren’t just for kids. Though that’s more widely accepted today, in 1981, when HEAVY METAL debuted, it wasn’t. With copious drug use, gratuitous nudity, and graphic violence, the film captured the hearts of genre fans. Based on the adult oriented comic magazine, and featuring work from comic legends (most prominently Moebius, Bernie Wrightson, and Richard Corben, but also Neal Adams, Mike Ploog, and Howard Chaykin), it’s a beautiful film perfect for late night viewing. The film is structured like an anthology, with a series of very different, though loosely connected, short stories, mostly of the sword and sorcery, horror, or sci fi variety. The framing sequence and interludes utilize a MacGuffin in the form of a supremely evil glowing green orb. Each story has the orb but some feature it more than others. Art styles and genres change drastically between segments and use different directors so it’s tonally all over the place. That doesn’t harm the film, though, as it adds to the charm. I didn’t immediately recognize any of the directors but the writers include Dan O’Bannon and Len Blum. There are some thrills to be found, and the film obviously aims to titillate (ahem), but stoner comedy is prevalent. Comedic actors, then, are appropriately the biggest names in the cast with John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis all doing significant work. Music is also an important element with druggy hard rock tracks providing an overt sonic landscape for the film. This brings me to my first nitpick, though. For a film titled “Heavy Metal,” the soundtrack features almost no Metal all at all. Black Sabbath’s track is the lone exception. Now, the music isn’t necessarily bad, it just strikes me as a little odd. Tonally, the music meshes with the visuals for the most part, but it’s deployed somewhat uniquely. Typically, you see tracks used to punctuate visual cues or as kind of a tool to inform editing. Here, it’s more reminiscent of music videos with the music just playing out over the visuals with a much looser connection to what’s happening on screen. Again, that’s not a bad thing. My second nitpick is the animation. While the artwork itself is outstanding, with faithful stylistic translations of singular artists, the animation is a little choppy. If you’re used to the fluid movements of Disney films or modern big budget cartoons, you might find the presentation here to be a little harsh. Neither of these issues ruin my appreciation of the film, though. HEAVY METAL is not for kids, though it might appeal to your inner stoned teenager. Some segments are stronger than others but I enjoy all of them, usually for different reasons. For this longtime comic fan, it’s an absolute blast to see the artwork of comic gods Moebius, Bernie Wrightson, and Richard Corben brought to life. Recommended for fans of UP IN SMOKE, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, CREEPSHOW, and THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

I was so happy to get my DVD of Heavy Metal in the mail, I ripped it from the packaging and put it in immediately. The audio was so crisp and clear and the visuals are updated to look clear on modern HDTVs. I have had such trouble finding this movie anywhere online, thank you so much Best Buy!!

Lots of fun, with some good animation from different artists. If you are aware of Heavy Metal magazine, then you know what to expect. This is an adult animated movie though. Lots of violence and nudity. So, definitely not for young children.

Heavy metal is an awesome movie!! Great soundtrack!!!

Excellent quality transition from HS to bluray. Classic blue plastic snap case with insert sleeve is nice, but nithing special to write home about. Overall, an amazing addition to any collection.

Most people don't realize how old the Heavy Metal movie is it was made produced and release back in 1979. I still have some of the old original magazines and part of the stories that were in this movie. It's a great for Storm movie but it's not for anybody under 18 years of age. Also the music is back from the 70s one of the biggest groups at that time was the up-and-coming journey. If your fan of the Heavy Metal magazine this is a definite must have any Buddies collection it's a great old animated film . it's a classic

If you love awesome stories and animation with great artistry this is the movie for you. Did i mention awesome rock music as well.

I hope BestBuy continues to carry physical copies in todays world of subscriptipn based entertaient renting. Heavy Metal is great btw

This is not a review of the movie itself, as it's an animation classic. For me, I had this on DVD for a long time. Then when a special offer was available, I made the jump to Blu-ray. Huge improvement in video & audio quality over the DVD version. Granted, the movie is old-school hand-drawn animation (not in the Disney style) so it will never been pristine. But I don't think it's supposed to be: it's rough, organic, raw. But still enjoyable.

Really good and entertaining we really liked it and it kept our interest through out the whole movie.

I adore this movie, especially when friends come to visit my age. It’s a show stopper. How can you not rock out?

This was a nostalgia buy. I read the graphic novel decades ago and rushed to the theater to se the movie. Happy to add it to my collection.

Heavy metal has always been one of my favorite movies and now the Blu-ray version makes it look so much cleaner and More beautiful

One of the best sify magazines with great stories and got to make a great movie with great artist to draw in all kind of imaginable ways. This is very old but still has that greatness of science fiction, fantasy, sex, music, all... glad to have it again for a great price.

Heavy Metal is one of my favorite movie. Heavy Metal Blu-ray is a must have for me.

Throw back to the 80s. Classic movies are always a great idea for movie night with friend and family.
