Heavy Metal is ugly, violent and crude...but I loved every minute of it. The movie has a killer soundtrack, amazing animation for its time and a great selection of stories that range from creative to satirical. The only flaw of Heavy Metal is the framing device to how these stories are told, but I can overlook that for how enjoyable these stories are. Truly this is the only time you get to see John Candy do John Carter right! Also, the blu-ray boasts a decent trasnfer with a wealth of extras to keep any fan at bay. From an in-depth documentary to deleted scenes (some in rough animation), the biggest crown jewel is an early workprint that shows Heavy Metal from a different stage, with the exception of a deleted sequence added back in. The commentary on the workprint is very informative, but it leaves my curious to know why there is no audio commentary on the actual final cut itself. In some case, you are left wanting more with this Blu-Ray release, but I feel there is enough justice here to make it a must for any collector!

    A teenage boy's dream

Heavy Metal is a tribute to a now defunct magazine. The movie is broken up into little vignettes like a magazine. It is a teenage boy's dream of violence, bare breasts and rock n' roll. Rather than judge it by today's standards, I chose to accept it on its own terms. My main criticism is about the music. While the sound effects, explosions and screaming were quite loud, the rock and roll sound track seemed to be playing in the next room. The songs needed to be much louder. The soundtrack features Black Sabbath, Journey, Sammy Hagar and Don Felder. I didn't even remember Felder had a solo post-Eagles project. I'm now looking for the CD.

To those of you who saw this movie when it came out in the early 80's, it was amazing on the big screen. When I saw it on sale, I had to buy it. It has one of the all-time BEST soundtracks of ALL time. The bands that were featured are all classics. And the movie itself is creative genius. The animations for a movie - now 40 years old - are spectacular. A welcome addition to my library!

This movie would not get made today. It is not remotely politically correct. It is also not at all appropriate for children. It's rated R for a reason. Now that we have that out of the way... I love this movie. Animated violence, drug use, and enormous breasts. All that and a cool story, too. The music is a fantastic slice of early 1980's hard rock. One might even say, Heavy Metal. If any of the above sounds fun to you, check out this movie!

If you haven’t seen Heavy Metal the I don’t now what to tell you to expect. It’s a wild ride. Does it make sense? No. Is it compelling? Also no. Is the art style great? Occasionally? It’s a strange and mixed bag but for me that is why it’s enjoyable. A great copy of the blu ray transfer. Looks nice and sharp.

Full animation cartoons are the best. This movie from 1981 is multiple short stories that revolve around the Loknar Orb that brings evil and destruction and the chosen one that wards off it's evil powers. Many of the voices for the characters are from the SNL actors and the Second City actors. The sound track to the movie has many great songs and could be it's own greatest hits album.

Heavy Metal is a 1981 adult cartoon base on the graphical novel. The animation was at one time some on the best work, beside other companies. The Blue-Ray has extras and shows how they made the cartoon, it seem they used live actors so they could get the right animated scenes. Even though it had a lot of graphical issues and is rate "R" older adults could study this for works of art and maybe help people who are studying this type of work do better in animation.

I saw this film in the theater in 1981 on my 17th birthday. I was blown away then and it still blows me away in 2019. The music and soundtrack is awesome, the stories are excellent and often quirky and even funny, the voice acting is superb with actors like John Candy playing several roles.

Juvenile, gory, out of date and a blast to watch!

Let me start by saying the first time I saw this movie, I was maybe 12 years old. This opened my eyes to the fact that "cartoons" could very much be not for children. Watching it over two decades later it's just as campy, just as juvenile, but holds up to the test of time well. Sure, we're not dropping Corvettes from the Space Shuttle any longer (ok, we never did, but work with me), but the story telling and visuals are still enjoyable as an adult. And I'm not letting my 12 year old watch it.
