Definitely not just a love story, as one can imagine from the the title of the movie.
On the contrary, a very good (and useful) introduction to the BACKGROUND events, facts and characters that can help and facilitate a correct understanding of one of the classic of Western world Literature, the “Iliad”. As a matter of facts, the Iliad covers just the events related to the last year of a 10 year war between the Trojans and the Achaeans (Greeks). What caused the war, the relation among the key heroes, Agamemnon’s role, Cassandra’s premonitions, Clitemnestra, Iphigenia etc. are all well explained and truly useful starting points for some serious studies of the Greek Classics.
Two weak points: 1) the role of the Olympus Gods/Goddesses in the whole events is not adequately stressed and therefore needs to be searched separately; 2) the rendition of the hero Achilles is totally inadequate, both in terms of acting time (too short) and in terms of content, entrusted as it to a not-so-great actor, depicting Achilles as a vulgar bloodthirsty thug. To understand Achilles well enough, I suggest to watch the movie “Troy”: the level of this movie (as a whole) is not so high but, at least, the Brad Pitt acting of Achilles restores some humanity and true heroism to the Greek hero.
All in all, a useful, instructive must see movie...
I would recommend this to a friend
