I was told this movie was considered scary but I found it tolerable to just watch it.

This is one of the better ones, and I'm a huge fan of Wes Craven's original.

This movie was so-so when it came out. Now it just feels terrible. It’s not shot well (annoying camera angles) and the soundtrack is just bad. So many plot holes...

Following the very impressive "High Tension," Alexandre Aja directs the remake of Wes Craven's "The Hills Have Eyes." Unlike the recent remakes of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Dawn of the Dead," the original "The Hills Have Eyes" actually had room for improvement and its remake wasn't only made to capitalize on the name recognition of the original.
The film is about the Carter family and their cross-country vacation that is hindered by a group of mutants.
Aja did an excellent job with the remake. The tension is very high -- especially at the end of the film during the scenes in the mutants' town. The Carter family are likable, and it's hard watching them die in front of each other.
This film is very violent, and the unrated version includes an extra minute of violence. However, the extra minute doesn't change the tone of the film drastically because it's made up of so many small additions that are barely noticeable. The unrated version is still recommended because the R-rated cut comes on a double-sided DVD and contains widescreen and fullscreen versions of the film. In addition to excising the gore, the R-rated DVD excises some special features as well.
The main special feature on the unrated DVD is a 50-minute making-of, which is very informative. There are also two commentaries and a handful of production diaries. Highly recommended.

This was a great remake, my wife and I loved! Brilliantly directed by Alexandre Aja (High Tension, Mirrors), and a great cast. I love all the remakes we are doing these days, because we can make them with better acting and special effects than the old ones. If you're a fan of the old one, you'll love this one. I highly recommend it! Also, some other good remakes are Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, Black X-mas, and The Hitcher.

This is the only recent horror remake I've seen that I've found has surpassed the original. Wes Craven's film was good but had room for improvement. Aja directs a great horror survival film here. The documentary is lengthy and good. Highly recommended.

A disgusting gore fest

I didnt enjoy this movie at all. I like a good horror movie but this was just a blood and guts fest. At first this movie seemed like a great film and then it just got worse and worse. After one particular scene in which a women is "assaulted" in a... bedroom manner by a mutant i just walked away and came back later when the movie had around 45 minutes left.
If you are into Blood and Guts and cheap attempts at Shock Value this is probably your type of movie. If however you are looking for a True Horror Experiance i would suggest something along the lines of "The Strangers"

Like all other remakes these days, we get a lesser but more violent/bloodier film. This movie is still enjoyable especially if you didnt see the original Wes Craven version. Great extras on the dvd though.
