I was shocked to see all these musicians with how they have to live when joining an established band. Very good documentary.

If you're not a musician, this film may not interest you. In spite of that, the movie does offer a glimpse into the lives of session/touring musicians (aka "hired guns"). But it's just a glimpse. One gets the sense that there is a lot left out; that there is more story to tell, but couldn't find more hired guns to interview. The low point of the film is when it spends an inordinate amount of time slamming Billy Joel. One gets the sense that this is a hit piece on Joel. Even if the dirt they dish on Joel is true, it still doesn't belong in this movie. In spite of this, I would give "Hired Gun" a thumbs up - especially if you are a musician.

I saw it in theaters when Fathom Events showed it! Such a well made documentary that really takes you further into the life of hired guns, you really learn a lot about what that term means, and the struggles that can really come with it. As well as the successes that can come with it and the risks that have to sometimes be taken. I thought it was awesome seeing all the different people that were a part of Hired Gun, I really enjoyed learning more about people such as Jason Hook, Rudy Sarzo, Nita Strauss, and many more! Very well rounded story telling as well with both sides being told; the hired guns themselves and also interviews from people such as Alice Cooper, telling their experiences of working with hired guns. I love this documentary and preordered it as soon as it went on sale! Excited to watch it again! I'd like to give a shout out to Jason Hook, since he is the one I learned about the documentary from!
