Cant believe i waited this long to get the series...incredible

For those of us who read the books, the wait is finally over and we have the adaptation we wanted! Don't get me wrong, "The Golden Compass" was a great movie, but it wasn't the book to media adaptation readers wanted. The series is titled the same as the book trilogy and the series provides more backstory to some of the main characters, which flesh them out even more than we could ever hope for! Even if you haven't or are not interested in reading the books, then you should still watch this mini-series for an intriguing blend of fantasy, science, religion and reality.

I've read HDM several times. I loved the 2007 movie, even if imperfect and not exactly story-accurate. Here you have a much more accurate adaptation, even if imperfect too. I just don't like some of the casting choices. Lyra, Coulter, Asriel are all ok. Scoresby is a no. Maybe it's just because Sam Elliott played him to perfection that nobody else could ever play that part. Another miscast was Lord John Faa, the Gyptian boss. Does not have anywhere near the commanding presence of the movie portrayal.

I just started viewing the 1st season and I like it. Unlike the Golden Compass movie, it takes a more leisurely pace. There are some small but significant differences from the movie which puts a slightly different perspective on the plot. But it also shows in a flashback how Lyra arrived at Oxford, a detail from the Book of Dust. Also no mention of the unique power source highlighted in the movie, at least so far. Great visuals. Highly recommended production.

Bought this season to add to my collection and re-watch before season 2 started. The stories are interwoven at a nice pace with appropriate character reveals and end of episode AHA moments. Each episode keeps you interested in what is coming next and the season's climax. Loved the witches and was excited for more in season 2. Great price allowed me to purchase (even with HBO MAX I like to have complete sets)

If you have bad memories of the movie still grating around your brain, you're going to have a therapeutic time watching this. Quick note on the packaging, I was initially hesitant to purchase because BB lists only bluray, whereas other stores list bluray + digital, and I've been burned before. When I got my copy it did include a slipcover that verified bluray + digital.

Based on Pullman's novels, this season adapts the first book in the trilogy, "The Golden Compass". Unique world, excellent characters. The movie (which came out in 2007), had a lot to cover in its 2 hour run time, making it almost incomprehensible. As a series, the material is much easier to digest. Visual effects are top notch.

I am a big fan of the Golden Compass, have read the books and watched the movie, now I can add the HBO series to that list. This adaptation is a bit darker than what I had seen before but the world and atmosphere are still amazing. Looking forward to season 2 as season 1 was a great deal of fun to watch.

I liked the Golden Compass movie and was disappointed they did not continue with the sequels. Showed it to my sister as well and she enjoyed it. This TV series is much better, can't wait for the next season. Purchased several copies to give as gifts as well. Highly recommended - A+++++

Excellent production, storyline, casting and visuals. Love this series and loved the second as well. Disappointed we will only get one more series. Hope they finish it off by giving it a great conclusion worthy of its creators.

We loved the movie Golden Compass and were crushed when it did not come out with the last half. This series is also magical, good story line but nice differences to the movie referenced. Can't wait for season 2!!

It’s been an amazing the story and now I’m waiting for the next season, love the characters and how it’s has been developing the store , love it and hope everyone will enjoy it too.

Really like this DVD. The animals are fantastic and the story line is great. I will have to see this more than once to view all the special effects. Have to buy one 4 my twin sister.

Excellent retelling of the book series - TV has the ability to tell the story in more detail than the two hour Golden Compass movie could. Additional seasons will allow exploration into the stories of the later books. Great production values and quality writing/acting.

Starts off slow but it gets better. Hold on to your seat it's an adventure. Never saw this on HBO, I heard good things. So I bought it for a good price at best buy. lots of CGI in this show. It keeps you hanging on for more after each episode excited for season 2.

So far the story is very close to the book. And just like the book, I like the bear the best. This does a better job than the previous movie, as well.

Loved watching it on HBO and by the time the season ended I knew I just had to have it. Such a great adaptation of a wonderful book. Can't wait for season two.

Love this series. I read the books a loooong time ago, but from what I can remember, it follows the stories very closely.

Very entertaining! Great blu ray at a very good price. Allows me to catch up on Season 1 and view Season 2 during holidays.
