Great movie (just not as good as the LOR trilogy)

I bought this as it had a great price and I love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I hadn't seen it yet but was very excited to see it. While it's definitely worth seeing and is a very very good movie, I would note that in my opinion the original trilogy is better than this movie is. Part of the reason for that I think is that the original trilogy they made one movie per book while this prequel trilogy is basically 3 movies made from one book being stretched out across all 3. The blu ray quality and sound was amazing and this was definitely worth it. I bought it online and picked it up at the store for free shipping. I would highly recommend.

I am a huge LOTR fan, so I loved this film. I am also a massive fan of special features/bonus content on DVD/Blu-Ray releases, the greatest of all time being the extended editions of the LOTR films, so I was very excited to find out they were going to be giving The Hobbit trilogy the same treatment. I was not disappointed at all after the long wait, there are over NINE HOURS of featurettes and documentaries about every aspect of the creation and design of the first Hobbit movie, even a few things dip into the second movie. There are also three commentary tracks for the film. What are you waiting for? Order a copy right now!

I recently bought a 3d tv on black friday and needed a 3d movie to test it out. After watching The Hobbit in 2d when my father in law rented it, I knew this was the movie to test the 3d tv. I went out and bought The 3d version of The Hobbit and it looks great, this movie was actually filmed with the latest 3d technologies instead of being post converted to make some extra bucks. The 3d is immersive, the action sequences seem to jump out of the screen and the soundtrack is great. The only issue with the movie may be pacing. This was split into 3 movies and the original book is under 200 pages so things are definitely stretched thin.

Nobody second guesses the TLC Peter JAckson puts into these extended editions. And I absolutely love that they kept the same exact tone/menus of the flawless LOTR EE editions even if they were 10 years ago (the golden age of DVD production really. The exhaustive nature of this release is really a throw back and it would probably take you about 2 days of undivided attention to consume everything on this blu ray. But the movie itself? Weak. Hobbit does not need to be 3 movies. Didnt even need to be 2. It oozes of cash grab and paper thin on narrative content. Tons of hot air. Only reason I think this movie is slightly better than the next 2 Hobbits is because Martin Freeman is amazing as usual and this is the most Bilbo centric movie of the trilogy before it all becomes a convoluted mess and Bilbo gets lost in the mix.

3D made this movie even better than it would have been in Bluray/HD!
Just like Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is a wonderful movie for everyone! The characters, plot and action are superb; and with 3D filming, you are virtually alongside the characters, experiencing everything as they do. The realism is breath-taking!!! It left me spell-bound and eager for more!!! The worst part about The Hobbit is having to wait for the next one to hit the shelves! I can hardly wait!!!

"The Hobbit" is undeniably beautiful to look at, and not just because of the meticulously crafted world Jackson and WETA created. The 3D nearly is perfect -- there are very few overt pop-outs and the depth seemed like an ideal representation of reality; not too deep and yet deep enough to remind me of its extra advantage over 2D. This is one of the first 3D films I've seen ("Hugo" is another) where the extra dimension drew me in and added to the experience and immersion, rather than detracting.

I really liked this movie and felt it was a good addition to the LOTR series. But it does have its critics who point out every little flaw. ( Here we go again, just like the Star Wars movies) The first 3 versus the last 3 movies. The Hobbit is just the first installment and does a good job in doing what it was meant to do and that is set up the next two installments while giving the background for the story. The Hobbit was meant to be enjoyed by a younger audience while the Lord of the Rings Trilogy by Tolkien was aimed more towards adults. I felt it was a great movie and I am looking forward to the next two installments.

The movie is of course fantastic. I am not going to sing it's praises once again, by now Peter Jackson's movie's have proven themselves to be great. The thing I am having trouble with is - this is the third time I've purchased this movie. I bought it when it first came out and was glad to have it. Then a collector's version came out with a real nice case that was like a book. This was a beautiful piece and as a collector I really wanted it so I bought it. Now here comes the "Extended" version with 25 minutes of unseen footage. Well....I HAVE to Have that so I buy it again. I am sure that after the third movie in the series is released there will be a box set and I will have to but that too! <sigh> O well, the price I have to pay for being a collector :) If you don't all ready have this movie, this is the version to get, or wait for the box set.

I love these movies. While many said that Tolkein's "The Hobbit" did not need to be split into 3 movies but I feel that Jackson did a great job in this first installment. The added scenes in the extended edition definitely helped to flesh out some parts of the story that were left either unexplained or poorly explained. The best example of this is the extended part at the beginning that detailed the relationship between the dwarves and the elves. Most of the other extra scenes are songs which I though was cool since that was always featured so prominently in his books.

This is a great story and the movie is fairly accurate to the book and entertaining. The cinematography is good and the 3D effects are average and really didn't add much to the viewing. I will probably rewatch in 2D.
I also didn't realize until after watching this movie that the ONE relatively short book will be split into THREE movies. Talk about a money grab. The first movie ended sort of in the middle of the story and really left me wanting to be able to insert the next movie to see what happens. Alas, I will need to wait another year and probably 3 more years to get the whole story.
I should have just waited and bought the whol set when it is completed.
One other complaint, the 3D version spans two discs so the movie stops abruptly and ask you ton insert another disc. Sort of a throw back to the days of laser discs and why people hated them.

I bought the second and third movies' extended disc sets at Walmart, but when I went to buy the first one they only had the two disc set in a cheap looking box for the same price. I'm glad I was able to get it at Best Buy and complete my collection, and the enclosing box is very nice looking. Plus, the digital copies are always a bonus for me. I wish I hadn't had to download apps or start accounts on Flixster or VUDU to get the digital copies (some places let you use iTunes instead), but that's not a real deal breaker.

Peter Jackson's LOTR team got better at set design, digital photography, CG, costume, choreography, sound design, directing, and story telling. It seemed a little heavy on contrived misfortune and good luck. The characters were well played but the dialog sometimes got thick with sentimentality. The script occasionally jerked at formulaic good versus evil character development. Realistically none of the 13 should be alive at the end but this is good ole fashioned fictional adventure done with vast resources and great skill. Take the trip and enjoy.

My family and I enjoyed this movie as far as both the plot and the special effects. It was definitely well worth the wait. If you liked the Lord of the Rings Trilogy you will like this first installment of this prequel trilogy. It goes back to the younger years and journeys of Bilbo Baggins. The only unreal things to me about prequels are that the special effects, make-up and just newer technology looks better than older movies that should in sense be lesser because they take place at an older date in time, like centuries! But, still a very good movie.

Being a fan of the LOTR trilogy, I was poised to be disappointed... How could they repeat the same caliber of movie magic? Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Amazing CG rendering - CHECK. The awe and wonder element - CHECK. The epic feel and power of cinematic synergy - CHECK. Flawless acting - CHECK. Obnoxiously good cliff hanger - CHECK. Gandalf - CHECK. Just watch it already! In 3D or bust....
On a side note, the second installment is much better. But you need to watch this one to truly appreciate "The Desolation of Smaug".

I've seen all of the LOTR movies and read Tolkien's books. Most of my family did not read the books and found the LOTR trilogy of movies somewhat confusing. With this movie, they did a good job of tying into the LOTR trilogy with the introduction but then focusing on the story. There seem to be some extra fluff to fill time that was not really needed (like the song when the dwarves are doing dishes), but this keeps it from being rushed and helps you get used to the characters. Overall we all enjoyed this movie.

Obviously, Tolkien's books are classics and Peter Jackson does an amazing job of bringing these works to life. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is more whimsical than The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and great in a more light hearted way.
I have watched almost all of the 9 (I think) hours of extras and they are very interesting and well done as well if you are the type that likes a look behind the scenes.
This is also the first time I have taken advantage of the Ultraviolet digital copy. Pretty cool and pretty easy.

After The Lord Of The Rings movies, there was a lot of expectation for a follow on based on The Hobbit. It was a long wait though, but worth it. It was a thrill to watch the references to the previous Lord Of The
Rings movies. It was great that they could get most of the key actors
from LOTR to re-create "younger" versions of their characters for this
pre-sequel. I was really impressed by the re-creation of The Shire countryside and Bilbo's house in this movie. Fans of the Lord Of The
Rings movies will definitely enjoy this movie. Too bad they had to make 3 movies out of one little book, while previously the 3 books of LOTR ( a much more complex and long story plot) was done in just 3 movies. Even so I'm waiting though for 2nd installment of this movie's
trilogy.

Bearing in mind that this represents only a fraction of the book it is taken from, and even with the book broken down into several movies, not all the details of the book were or could be put into the movies without increasing the length considerably and the boredom factor even more, this stayed close to the part of the book it was based on and did and excellent job with what it covered. I enjoyed it and the other Hobbit movies enough to recommend them without reservation.

"The Hobbit" is every bit as good as the first Lord of the Rings movie, "The Fellowship of the Ring." Like that movie, "The Hobbit" introduces the audience to the characters that will be portrayed in the Hobbit trilogy. There does seem to be more action in "The Hobbit" than in "Fellowship," but not nearly as much as the latter two LOTR movies (which I enjoy more). Basically, if you liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy, or are a fan of fantasy action films, you'll like the movie. Great film for the whole family!
