Saw this in the store last week and had to do a retake. Foreign film with a tentacle on the front..."I've seen enough hentai to know where this is headed!" That little meme popped into my head but after reading the back and a couple reviews of the movie, I figured that for only $5 it was a pretty good buy.
Sadly, the first one I got was a defective disc. PS3 and XBOX couldn't read it and it took my PC 5 minutes to play 2 seconds. Had a horrible feeling that they sent the store Region 2 DVDs or something. Took it back and had it exchanged for a new one which played just fine.
Basic synopsis for the movie is already posted but there's a bit more to it than that. You can definitely feel the American influence on the film and with it there's a bit of anti-American sentiment. The more you watch Korean/Japanese films, the more you'll notice it. The story was decent but I wouldn't call it amazing. It didn't flow really well in my opinion. The characters were all a wreck which I suppose is what makes them such a dysfunctional family. Was never really sure which part of the movie was supposed to be a comedy, drama, or horror scene.
That being said, the movie is definitely rewatchable. I found myself rewinding at points to see if I had missed something in prior scenes. I even went ahead and ordered a copy of the Blu-ray to see it in higher quality.
CG was done pretty well throughout the movie, too. Can tell that they had a decent budget to work with. Also, I enjoyed the English voicing and I think I recognized a voice or two from various anime series.

Quite a bit of Extras included in this one including some director/cast commentaries, gag reels, trailers, and more. Watched through about half of them and found them entertaining.

Not your usual monster movie

The Host is a very unusual monster movie. The monster is awesome. The scene when it first appears is one of the best entrances I have ever seen. However, this movie is really about a dysfunctional family that gets hooked in with the monster. The direction, action, special effects and script are all outstanding. When you watch it you can decide if the monster represents the Iraq War. The movie is from South Korea and you can view it dubbed or subtitled in English (which I think is the way to go). This movie is surprisingly deep and will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the end. This is definitely a five star film and the best monster movie in years.

Outstanding Monster Movie (and More)

This movie has been defined "Little Miss Sunshine" meets "Godzilla," and it is the best way to describe it: "The Host" is a great, scary, humorous, sweet-and-sour misadventure of a dysfunctional family who go on a quest to find a huge monster that has snatched the little daughter of the protagonist, whom everyone believes is still alive. But there's so much more to it, that you really have to watch the movie to appreciate all of the nuances of this Korean masterpiece. I recommend to watch it with the Korean audio track -- it adds much more to its charm. A real gem, who will surprise everyone who will watch it.

This was a great Blu-ray purchase. The film, extras and everything was above average. I would say that if you don'y like subtitles you will have to sit through the dub track which isn't very good.

A similar movie to cloverfield except this movie has a well-planned plot. The beginning is not quite the best intro, as it almost made me stop the movie and return it. However, the middle and ending are entertaining and worth it's while.

I really enjoyed this movie. Nomally reading subtitles gets old but this movie was worth it. The CGI is pretty good, and I found parts very humorus. It is like Colverfield meets Kungfu Hustle.

As a fan of sci-fi/fantasy and horror, I tend to ignore most reviews of movies in these genres. The reviewer who wrote the review that appears on the movie must have been payed alot. The plot is bad by karate movie standards, it has no funny moments, and when it tries to deliver a heart felt moment it completely misses. A total waste of time and money.
