Better than you might think

I think this film is actually much better than its reputation. After hearing so many bad things I expected to hate it, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found it had a lot to offer. I'm surprised how often it gets lambasted as being a brainless film, as I actually consider it to be one of the more intellectual horror films to come out in quite some time. Thematically, it addresses such pertinent and interesting topics as exploitation, the evolution of prostitution, and the relationship between pleasure and pain. It offers up some pretty thought provoking material if you look for it.
However, I must admit that although the ideas in the film are worth pursuing, the execution does indeed leave a little to be desired. The narrative isn't the most exciting thing in the world, and the torture elements of the film are going to alienate a lot of viewers with their greusome presentation.
No matter what you may think of the film, you can't deny the wealth of information provided by the special features. The majority of the enlightening bonus material comes in the form of five (count 'em, FIVE) audio commentaries. This is the most commentaries I've witness on any DVD to date, aside from Eli Roth's first outing, Cabin Fever. Not only are there five feature length commentaries to check out, but they're all worth listening to. I would be happy with just one audio commentary of this caliber, but across the board, all five of them are a wealth of information, with little to no overlap. Eli Roth (who participates in every single one) has oodles to say about his film and filmmaking and
general, and he is just a joy to listen to.
If you didn't like the film on a first go around, I would recommend giving another try and looking a little deeper. If you still don't see any deeper thematic elements at play then give Eli Roth's commentary a
spin and see if he persuades you at all.
All in all, this is an intellectually stimulating horror movie with a wonderful DVD presentation.

While this one is pretty disgusting at times, it has its perks. The story is very original (and events like these have been rumored to be true - which adds to the curiosity and desire to watch) as are the visual effects. As you watch, you find yourself plunging into it as the madness deepens. You'll wince, cringe, laugh, and cheer (not necessarily in that order) as the movie unfolds. This movie is a definite attention-getter that will keep you watching - whether you want to or not.

Eli Roth is a great director. You can tell he grew up watching movies like Dead alive and Susperia through his work.I also really like how he gave Takashi Miike a part in the movie. Some people might be turned off by the violence and gore, but if you like movies like Ichi the killer you will appreciate this film.

This is an excellent horror film that pulls no punches. Entertaining and unnerving, and for those who look close enough there is even a deeper meaning behind the gore that splashes across the screen.

Torture is disgusting

I dislike this movie because the main basis of this horror is 3 American guys stay at the Hostel that tortures people. It is very graphic and I feel like torture is not very horror like... and is more grotesque/disgusting to me. If you like to see torture, this is your movie, but if you can't take graphic violence, pass on this one.

The first one was the best. After that they just seemed to rehash the same story line and try to add more gore. This one was original and scary and well made.

Positively the worst thing I've ever seen on film. I have nothing against sick or gross movies but this is so far overboard it's not funny. 15 minutes into it I was ready to walk out and regret not doing so. Please, I'm begging you - don't give the filmmaker another penny for his pathetic efforts.
