This was everything 1883 wished it could be. And much more concise. (Photo: me putting the blu-ray in front of half of my face)

This film presents an interesting take on the conflicts of native Americans and basically the calvary in the 1800's West. Rosamund Pike plays a woman whose whole family is killed by Indians. She does a good job of presenting the mental stages that a person most likely would go through given this situation. For example, she screams and no sound is heard. (Interestingly, Christian Bale, the cavalry captain, is in a different situation in the film and has the same thing happen to him.) The film has an edginess to it and a sense of realism as the group of calvary soldiers, Rosamund and the Indian prisoners travel to Montana. The Indians, led by their dying chief, excellently played by Wes Studi, are being escorted back to their lands in Montana as per a U.S. presidential directive. It is a physical journey but also a mental and emotional journey for all involved. The film is basically showing how people who hate each other in the beginning of the film come to understand, help and respect one another in the end. It is an interesting transformation for all three main characters. While the film has action scenes, the director also slows the people down giving them a chance to move forward in many different human ways. There is realistic brutality (not for the squeamish nor children). I enjoyed the film. It has excellent acting, directing and cinematography. I would recommend this film to anyone interested in a higher level film that makes you do some thinking about human beings, their relationships, and the human condition.

Christian Bale gives another outstanding performance as a conflicted and bigoted cavalry officer escorting a terminally ill Cheyenne Chief to his tribal homeland to die. Wes Studi is outstanding as the chief. The development of the relationship between the two characters during the hardships they endure is an incredible journey. This is not a lighthearted feel good type of movie. It is gritty and tragic and an outstanding representation of conflicting ideas and how a man can change his views from being racist and bigoted to understanding that all people are just people who care about the same things.

This movie surpassed expectation. In hindsight, having seen "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" I realize that more western movies are aiming towards the brutal realities that existed in the time period. This is a great story where people who have experienced a lot of pain must come together for a common good - though it is not so cut and dry if that wasn't already implied. A happier ending than expected, sure, but nonetheless complicated. Would highly recommend and with the western landscapes as the background, 4k is the obvious choice!

Saw "Hostiles" at a friend's house awhile back. It left an impression. So solemn and brutally honest In the portrayals of it's characters and the history at the time. I needed to see this movie on my own t.v and on a 4K blu ray. It does not disappoint. The picture is rendered beautifully. Checkout the levels of detail on the mountains. The audio is engaging and powerful.

Bought Hostiles because it had Wes Studi, who is one of my favorite actors, in it. I was not only satisfied, I was overwhelmed. Clearly the best Western I have seen. Its not your run of the mill Western, it is an excellent story performed by outstanding actors (both male and female).

The great Wes Studi in his best role since Last of the Mohicans. Typical Hollywood excess is kept to a minimum and one feels that this is a story that could have happened more or less as depicted unlike so much of what the film industry produces.

I had wanted to see this movie since it came out in the theaters. I did not get a chance to go to the movies so I saw this on sale at Best Buy. I am glad I purchased the movie after I watched it. I recommend this movie to whomever likes the western style.

This movie turned out better than I thought it would. It has a good cast and a very good storyline. The characters look authentic for the time period and the acting was great! If you’re into western type movies than you should check it out!

As you would expect from the stellar cast and director this is a well done story with appropriate character development and realism. The director enlisted actual members of the Native American tribes in the film as consultants for accuracy.

I know this movie is sending a message that is important for others to understand how the female American Indians are violated and statistics are not being kept. This movie may be too graphic in places for younger viewers.

The attitude of the war mongering dominant populace of the "civilized" white population and their efforts to eliminate the indigenous population of the greater north America continent is staggering.

I want as much a fan of this movie as everyone else, but I did like the way it looked on my OLED! And the sound was outstanding. You wouldn't notice this from a sound bar, but it's all there on the disk.

I would say this is one of Christian Bale's best performances in a film. This movie is action-packed and really makes you take a deep look at what could have been back in the day.

Story-line realistically depicts the harness that still existed in the American West as late as 1892, and it will emotionally connect and touch you in ways you will not believe. The cinematography is thoughtfully done and takes advantage of the Wests’ natural vistas. It’s a well-told story of survival for the hostels – both red and white – and the elements of 1890 Western America that were not tamed yet. It is interesting to view the change of the lay of the land as the Party treks from New Mexico Northwest to Montana – the journey by horseback is about 4 months. For most viewers this film should be viewed more than just once to discover and understand its’ many subtle hidden messages – by their discovery your appreciation of the moving-picture will appreciate many fold. The Director, Scott Cooper, as well as the entire acting cast brought a lot of imagination and sensitivity to this dramatic moving-picture of the spirit of a bygone West.   The film is a great view which makes it easy to return to often. The saga can be considered to be an incredible journey into the heart of darkness with light notes of authenticity, realism, grief, and finally discovery in triumph of accomplishment and bonding previously unobtainable

This movie is pretty hard to get into and focus on. Not the average western movie since this focuses on the wishes of a native american chief to go back home to die peacefully and is escorted back by a Soldier who doesn't like him

The makers of this movie hit it out of the park! Very realistic! It's like they filmed it as it was happening back during those times. You won't be sorry you got this movie.
