Mid range windows laptops are a mess

After installing all updates, Windows 11 uses around 4 GB of RAM at idle, even on a fresh installation. This laptop originally came with an excessive amount of HP bloatware pre-installed, so I did a clean installation of Windows using a bootable USB. However, RAM usage remains high. Just opening a web browser and a few tabs immediately takes the RAM usage to around 50%. I've tested several Linux distributions on this same hardware, and various benchmarks—including running local language models and even simple browser benchmarks like Browser Benchmark 2.1—clearly show that Linux significantly outperforms Windows. For example, Google Chrome scored around 440 on Browser Benchmark 2.1 under Ubuntu, whereas on Windows 11, it scored roughly 370. This performance difference is substantial. Additionally, neither Ollama nor LM Studio utilizes the AMD GPU hardware or the supposed special NPU under Windows. The advertised NPU seems entirely non-functional in practical terms. Surprisingly, when running Ollama on Linux, the ROCm backend installs and functions smoothly. In my experience, a smooth Windows 11 experience requires at least 32 GB of RAM. In contrast, Ubuntu's latest LTS release idles at about 1.5 to 2 GB of RAM—less than half of Windows 11. Furthermore, Linux supports the laptop's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices immediately upon installation. Surprisingly, Windows does not automatically detect the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth drivers when installing from a bootable USB, forcing users to manually download and install them from HP's website—a process that requires technical skill. Linux, on the other hand, automatically detects and installs the necessary drivers without issue. It's astonishing how little progress Windows and third-party OEMs like HP have made despite decades of experience. I'm giving this laptop 2 out of 5 stars based on the Windows user experience for basic use, which is frankly pathetic. Windows 11 works acceptably on high-end hardware but is consistently poor on mid-range laptops like this one. Although advertised as upper mid-range, this laptop does not live up to expectations, even at the discounted price of $550. At its original price of around $1,000, purchasing this laptop would be unreasonable. Ultimately, the problem isn't only RAM; the CPU performance is also inadequate. This laptop feels more like a $400 to $500 machine. My advice is to avoid this laptop unless it's significantly discounted and you're comfortable installing Ubuntu, where it provides a vastly superior experience.
