Will be Trashed as Soon as the Ink Runs Out

I never got this printer to work wirelessly with my tablet but it's an off-brand tablet. I did not try to connect wirelessly to a phone. But I don't care about wireless anyway since I like to input my photographs to my computer anyway, adjust their settings and perhaps crop them before I print them out, since photo printing is so expensive ink-wise and special paper-wise. So no big deal. I never could get this printer set up with an "HP Connected" account either. I tried it but it does not work. There is a manual process to get the "printer claim code" from this printer but it does not work. I keep getting an error message and there is no documentation from HP that I can find that tells me what to do when I get this error message. HP just assumes that their printer will display the "printer claim code" every time and that will be it." Wrong! (But this does not matter either: see the last paragraph.) The best that I can say is that this printer prints on 8 1/2" by 11" paper. It does little well after that. Envelopes? Forget it! With the printer properly configured for envelopes, at least one-third of the time the printer will not pick properly. It will either pick two envelopes and immediately jam or it will not pick at all. The no-pick problem makes no sense: sometimes it will no-pick with there is just one envelope in the tray and sometimes it will no-pick when there are five. OK, but two-thirds of the time it actually picks only one envelope. Now, I usually use the 6 3/4" small envelopes. And maybe half of those times it will print the envelope decently. But the other half it will not: the printing is severely skewed from the upper left to the lower right. It looks terrible. If you are trying to impress someone with a computer-printed envelope, this printer will not do it unless you want to throw out half your efforts. The #10 envelopes are a bit better though. The same problem exists when printing on 4" by 6" photo paper. It comes out OK sometimes and sometimes the paper is skewed in the printer and the photo has to be thrown away. I'm going back to Walgreen's. The scanner is not the greatest. HP makes a point about placing the paper or item you want to scan up against the plastic printer frame to reference it. Thing is, the scanner itself does not scan out to the edge where the plastic frame is. If you want to fully scan or copy a sheet of paper, you have to move the paper away from the plastic frame corner at least 1/16" and let it float a bit out on the glass. Ditto a photograph. This defect can easily be demonstrated by scanning a piece of graph paper. This is not a big deal if you just need to scan or copy roughly but I sell paper items on eBay (postcards, matchcovers, etc.) and I need to scan the whole thing out to the edges. So I have to plop the item out in the middle of the glass and scan the whole thing and then call up a picture problem to rotate and trim things to get the picture right. It's a pain for me but for you, you may not care. The HP scanner software is way behind the software that came with my ten-year old Canon LiDe scanner. (Unfortunately Canon makes no 64-bit driver for that venerable old scanner so I can no longer use it.) This is basic software with some irritations. Every time you scan you are forced to name the scan file when you want to save it. Usually I want to use a default, like the Canon software did. It placed a dummy name that was the date plus incrementing number so you could go back and rename things later at your leisure. But if you do not name each scanned file immediately, the HP default is that each scan file overlays the previous one. Yup, stupid. Also every time you store a file on your computer the blasted software opens a new window as if you want to view what you just stored. Well, I don't. So if I scan ten items in succession, I end up closing ten windows. If the HP programmers were charged with making the scanner software so irritating that no one would use it, the objectives have been achieved. This is a typical HP product: it does about half of what it is spec'd to do right and about one-third of what it should do right. Enough stuff kind of works that you spend so much time trying to get things right that you do not realize that the time limit to return this printer to the retail store has passed. That's what happened to me. So by the time you come to the conclusion that this HP printer is junk, it is too late: you're stuck with the turkey. As for me, when the ink cartridges run out of ink I'm going to take this printer, triple-bag it in a heavy-duty plastic trash bags and pulverize it into a thousand pieces with my sledge hammer and toss it into the trash. It can begin its 100-year decomposition cycle in the landfill which is where it belongs.

    DO NOT BUY

This printer has been nothing but trouble since I bought it for school. I have an HP laptop so I thought there would be minimal issues between the two. Boy was I wrong. At first, this printer would only print half of the first page for every print job that I sent to it over WiFi. After doing a diagnosis, found out it was not the network. Then the printer stopped connecting via WiFi to my computer and I had to send my print jobs to HP e-Print which would then send it to my printer and it worked for a little while. So I bought the USB cable. I was able to print for a couple weeks, then the printer started giving me an error message about the wrong type of cartridges. These were genuine HP ink cartridges that I literally bought from the HP website. The troubleshooting videos on HP.com didn't solve the problem so now I can't print at all. Even with the additional purchase of a USB cable and HP ink. Beyond frustrated.

I love being able to print from anywhere! With this printer you can use an email to print from anywhere you are! It makes printing things from your phone, tablet, computer, or anything other device very easy. You just set it up with your network, or use the email, and you'll be printing in seconds.

Worst printer made since dinosaurs ruled the Earth

If you Google "Envy 4500 doesn't work" you'll get dozens of hits. The software is faulty. I tried to use mine with both my desktop and my laptop. Both kept reporting "printer offline" or "printer not found." I repeatedly reinstalled the software, both from the CD and from the internet. I waited too long to return mine, so I'm stuck with a $70 doorstop. This may be the worst printer ever made.

    Disappointing

After living very happily with an HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-one printer for several years, I decided to buy another HP printer. The HP Envy 4500 has been disappointing. I installed it using our Windows 8 computer in wireless (WiFi) mode, which promised to be very convenient. In fact, the printer often goes "offline" and even rebooting the computer and/or restarting the printer usually fails to bring it back on line. Searching on the internet for "HP Envy 4500 offline" reveals that many people have this problem. I upgraded to Windows 8.1, but with no improvement. This printer also works with HP ePrint, allowing one to send an email to the printer and have the email and attachments printed. Sometimes that works, but usually not when the printer has decided to go off line. If I could do this again, I would avoid this model and buy a better HP printer.

This is a piece of junk. Constantly turns itself off, you have to fiddle with the thing all the time. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY IT WILL NOT UNDER ANY ANY ANY SETTING LET YOU LOAD THE DRIVER WITH OUT SETTING UP AN ONLINE ACCOUNT WITH HP.....AND AGREE TO "SECURELY" SEND ALL YOUR INFORMATION TO THE NSA/HP OR WHO EVER IS GETTING IT. SCARY. ps...should this by some miracle get posted, there is no "post" button on this review....just dead in the water

This was a terrible printer right out of the box. It never grabbed the paper no matter how many times I pushed or pulled out the paper tray.Cheap plastic pieces. I should have listened to the reviews and not purchased it.

I've only had my Hp printer 6 months. It was an awesome machine till the copy and scan component went bad in it a couple weeks ago. Now it's just a simple printer. Sure had hoped it'd last longer than 6 months.

I had problems with the printer when I first bought it. I ended up having to use the USB printer cable to get it to print since the wireless function is useless when I was trying to print wireless-ly It worked great for a few months. I had to pack up the printer because I was moving but needed to print something at the last minute so I set it back up again. The problem happened when I attempted to print a document and I made several attempts. I had an error message stating that it was out of paper when really the printer was not grasping the loaded paper from the tray. I am not sure why. But I had to literally push the paper back far enough when it was trying to print so it would print. I don't have the receipt to take it back for a refund. But lesson learned and will not be buying this particular model again. EVER!

Can't install on Windows 7 system

After struggling with trying to install this printer on a Windows 7 system for several days, I regret that I'm bringing it back today to trade it for a Canon. Despite many, many attempts using both WiFi and USB connections and using all the HP "Doctor Tools," the installation always ended with "unable to connect to printer." I could print to it fine from my iPhone and I could access the Web interface from the PC with no problem. I could even use the Scan part of the HP PC software, but the print driver simply would not install. I'm a computer systems Master Technologist with 40 years of experience and 30 years at HP, so not a novice on these things. Very disappointing.
