No wires. This is great. It connects to the CPU by wifi and on occasion you send something to the printer and it doesn't print because you have to click on the printer ICON too not only the WORD print command and the thing doesn't even tell you so you're looking up and down wondering what happened. My son help me with this and it is usually very easy to amend. On the PLUS side this printer is FAST and I mean it. It is a pleasure to see on your desk and it is an HP product which I totally like.

My much older HPLaserJet 5MP (nearly 35 years old) was finally needing put out to pasture so I researched a lot of printers. While the price of this particular one was farther out of my desired price range, I viewed it as a still good purchase seeing as I got so much use out the older laser printer, and the new printer seemed to have good quality as well along with many good reviews from others. My older printer was built like a tank and perhaps that's why it lasted so crazy long. The newer printers these days are much more "flimsy" in their design, due in large part to keep things as light as possible and use less material in the build. As long as you're careful (i.e. not forcing anything) opening and closing the various drawers, lids, flippers, etc, I believe this new printer will last just fine. The performance compared to my older printer is absolutely amazing, albeit something you would expect comparing a 35 year old printer to a new one! Even still, the prints come out fast and furious, I've scanned with it and saved out to a USB stick. I haven't connected it up to my network yet so hopefully that will go well when I do. The screen is simple and easy to navigate, the driver software loaded just fine for me on my older PowerBook Pro. While it isn't the cheapest printer on the block, the feature set, HP's renowned quality, and the ease of use thus far has given me the satisfaction that this was a good purchase. And it looks quite nice on the office desktop as well which is certainly worth consideration as well. All in all I'm very happy with it.

Love my printer! After going back and forth for a few weeks, I purchased the printer. It prints quickly and only jammed once because I had something blocking the paper from flowing through. The toner seems to last a looong time and I’ve printed over 1000 pages with ease. You’ll love this printer. I only wish it had an extra tray for dual printing.

Difficult install, mediocre scanner

As an former school computer tech with 18 years experience, I expected a routine install. After setting up the printer and connecting the ethernet cable. I downloaded the complete installer and ran it. When I got to the place where it located the printer, it couldn't. I printed out the network details from the printer, and it was connected to the network. It showed up in the printer control panel. But even inputting the IP address or device name didn't work for the printer software. Finally I uninstalled the full webpack and installed the HP Easystart software. That finally worked.
After that, is fairly straightforward to set printer preferences. But the scanner is another matter. I found that using the document feeder didn't give great results. As others have mentioned, the scans are crooked. They are also low-resolution, 300 dpi max. The included OCR software is OK with a very clean, ordinary text document, except it sometimes cut off the text on one side. If There is any shading or if info is in boxes or columns, it creates a messy file full of little text boxes.
When I wanted a pdf document with recognizable text, I used Adobe Acrobat Pro which did work with the scanner, though the scanner interface is clunkier than that of my Epson flatbed. And if I want a resolution of 600 or higher, I have to use the printer flatbed which is inferior to the Epson. If I had it to do over, I would just get an HP printer and avoid the multifunction option.

Great Printer for Those of Us With Home Offices

This is an excellent printer for use in a home office, especially for the price. Prints rapidly, and the three-in-one features work well. My only problem with this printer was that the when you switch the closed paper tray from letter to legal, the paper often gets jammed. Also it seems to want to default to 2-sided printing and it can take some configuring to get it to print 1-sided by default. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

The HP M428mdw is packed with office support features - it's a sharp 1200x1200 laser printer, a flatbed scanner, a simple copier, and (if you ever need it) even a fax machine. Printer output is fast and clean, just be careful with parts like the slide-out paper support tray because everything is very lightweight and fragile, certain to break under rough handling. Paper transport is a bit noisy, but not too bad. For the price, though, it's a great value.
