    Decent printer, but less ink

This is a decent printer. Beware of ink cost. Also the ink cartridges are smaller, so you won't have as many prints. However, if you're not a frequent printer, it's probably not a problem. Also, not on this model, but a previous one I owned (#8710) the print head got out of alignment and it caused me to have to buy this one after less than a year of use. I hope the same thing doesn't happen to this one.

Bought this to replace my old HP that was 8 years old. Simple conversion and upgraded options from the previous unit. Duplex scan was the main reason for purchasing this unit.

Avoiding HP Printers after this one

I rarely decide to avoid products (and give negative reviews), especially ones from companies I've used for about 15 years now (HP Printers). However, this printer continues to fail to meet my expectations in multiple ways: 1. The first time I tried printing, it "ate up" multiple pages, which ended up counting against my HP instant ink usage (they give you a page quota). 2. I just printed a large document: 89 pages. A good number of the pages have unreadable text due to poor printing (there's white lines across the page where the ink didn't come out). 3. This printer is louder than my HP Printer from 2009 (The last one I bought). 4. This printer is larger than my HP Printer from 2009, even thought it has pretty much the exact same functionality. 5. You can't contact HP support outside of normal hours. There appears to be no way to email them. You can only have a live chat or call them (both options are showing unavailable right now). I'm not sure what printer I'm going to buy next, but it won't be an HP.

A versatile all purpose machine that's performed great so far with limited usage. Looking forward to mastering all its bells and whistles. I expect it to last a long time.

I bought this on sale after my old HP6500 ran its course.Upon unpacking I noticed that the new printer didn't have the same feel as the other,as in a bit flimsier.I had an issue with the wireless connection and had to hard wire to operate, unfortunately that removed me from the Instant ink program. The ink(902xl) is more costly than the 6500 ink(920xl).The 6500 lasted me 5 years,I only hope I get at least half of that from this.HP claims that they have streamlined their new printers to make them lighter and cheaper,I hope that they meant price and not quality.

Printer has performed great. I love the duplex printing. It is a little slower than I was accustomed to with my previous HP work at home printer, but fine for my personal printing..

This has been a great product and has all the features I need. I wish it would be a bit more easily discovered through wifi though, but that may be the wifi connection and not the printer per se.

My initial purchase was replaced by a refurbished unit due to a printhead issue. Now with a month left on my warranty (since it didn't restart with the "new" unit) I'm having printhead issues again. My ink is being sucked up with all of the cleaning and test pages needed. It prints well when it prints correctly, but am definitely not sold on this model.

    • Brand response from HP Team
      Posted .

      Hello David,

I'm very sorry this happened to you, but I'm hoping to offer you some tips that might help.

Not really sure if this is part of the problem, but it is important that this type of printer either be left on, or turned off only with the printer's power button. When it is left on, it will clean the printheads regularly to keep the nozzles clear. If the power button is used to shut it off, the printer will "park" so that the printheads are protected from drying out.

As to ink usage, the draft mode setting, and the setting that prints in black and white only will often help that.

There is also the Instant Ink program, which has plans that can save you money on ink: hpinstantink.com

There are HP printers that do more and certainly cost more but this Pro 6978 has just the right amount of bells and whistles for our needs. Very happy with my choice and purchase.

The starter cartridges are disappointing. Previous printer used 564 cartridges, but eventually the printer head failed. Hopefully, 902 cartridges won't experience the same issue.

Generally good. I have bad internet connection in home office, wifi drops off requiring a new login. A bit of a pain, but I believe it is not a fault with the printer itself.

We were sold a used, ink stained machine which did not include and cartridges. We had to buy cartridges ($95) which we were not able to return. This was a loss. The machine was returned.
