    Horrible Performance

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Same flaw as every HP printer in this class. The firmware and printer performance are dreadful. It constantly wants to go into "maintenance mode" just as you are about to print something. This is a lengthy process that can take 10-20 minutes to complete, if ever. I often find myself just rebooting the printer hoping to get it to a minimum point where it can print. It will frequently just lose connectivity with my Win10 desktop for no apparent reason. The only way to get it to reconnect and be recognized is usually to do a complete power down and restart of the printer. As I write this, I am 17 min into a print job that has yet to print anything, and the only feedback I get from the printer LED screen is "Printing". Bottom line, with this printer every print job is a 50-50 proposition as to whether you will actually get a print or not.

    We made a poor choice

After getting sold a bill of goods at Best Buy we bought the HP 6978 for our home office. Ugh. The print quality is consistently atrocious. We waste ink and time having to often reprint documents. Even after we do the maintenance steps the problems quickly return. We also signed up for the cartridge supply plan from HP. So far we have received only one box of cartridges from HP. The new black cartridge upon removal from the package and prepping for installation made a HUGE mess all over the desk, my fingers, and sink. EXTREMELY dissatisfied with this HP product and service. Strongly suggest you shop for another printer brand.

    Cheap Product

This printer sucks. The in store salesman talked me into buying it, and it was 15% off, so I did. Nearly every time I have to print something it does an "update". It's super loud. Haven't even had it a year and it keeps jamming on me. This morning I literally needed to print one single page document and it took me 10 minutes because it kept jamming. I'm not an idiot, there's nothing stuck in it and the paper/paper tray are inserted properly. This will be the last HP product I ever buy and the last time I listen to a salesman at Best Buy.

    not equivalent

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have used an HP PhotoSmart 6520 all-in-one printer for years. I do a lot of photo work. It could scan ANY size up to letter (as small as 1" x 1") at very high resolution. It could print photos that were exactly what I saw on the monitor in my PhotoShop app. Unfortunately, the black printer head died. I called to ask what printer would be equivalent to this one. I was told the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 was. I bought it. It isn't equivalentt. (1) It rocks back and forth when it is printing even tho' it is on a heavy wooden file cabinet. The 6520 never rocked. (2) It can NOT scan small items, and it's scan resolution is small, only slightly adjustable. (I use the scan to redo beat up photos) (3) The print quality, esp. brightness, is poor. I had to print a 6"x8" photo 3 times while ramping up the brightness (up to a setting of 38!) IN the PhotoShop app. What I had to see on the screen was 'over exposed' in appearance just to get a decent print. This was a waste of paper and ink, since I was printing on the 'best' setting. This printer is not worth it. I called again to see what would be "equivalent" and was told now that the "Envy" model is! However, that model has a tricolor cartridge and NOT 3 separate color cartridges. I now want to look into getting my 6520 repaired.....IF I can return this horrible printer.

it worked when it wanted to

i had this printer for about a year and i had a difficult time with it, when i first started using it i tried to print wireless photos or other documents, sometimes the wireless wouldnt work and i had to do it manually or it wouldnt let android products connect to print most of the time, but it would work fine with apple products most of the time. i recently moved things around and shut off the printer and moved it and left it off for a few days and then when i tried to turn it back on it had a "paper jam" error, even though there was no paper in there, replaced the ink and followed the troubleshoot step and still has a "Paper Jam" error.

      Hi there,

I'm so sorry for the troubles you've come across with these paper jam errors! I can fully understand how frustrating they must be, especially considering that you've already attempted to troubleshoot them. With that said, I'd like to see how else I can help get this resolved for you.

Something to be said about the paper jams is that they can sometimes be false. This means you'll receive a paper jam error, regardless of if there is an actual jam. While you did mention troubleshooting, I'm not entirely sure which particular steps you might've taken. What I'd recommend is going through the following support guide and taking any steps you may not have: support.hp.com/document/c05079673

If the issue persists, please contact us for support. We'd be more than happy to help troubleshoot this further, so you can give us a call at +1 800-474-6836 between the hours of 8 am - 9 pm ET. To expedite the process, you can gather these beforehand:
      - Model number
      - Serial number
      - Your location
      - Your case number (from prior contact with support)

We look forward to making things right.

    Worked great for a year

Worked great for a year, and for the price was a great printer. However after one year, I was constantly having to clean the print heads, not just once but through all three cycles, and it would only last for about ten sheets of color. Now after two years, I can't get the dumb thing to even clean the print heads properly. Overall buy, if you like buying new printers every year or so. Otherwise, go find yourself a printer that won't just give up. The best part is my service plan ran out four months ago.

I wrote a previous review of this product. I have since learned that the unit has no from paper stop in the paper tray. Thus, when using 8.5"x11" paper, the paper does not always sit in the correct spot in the tray and does not always feed properly.

    Average printer

good as low end type of printer. Loading paper in drawer is strange and drawer doesn't come out- you load paper while drawer in printer. Am able to use generic ink carts from Amazon without issues. Inks doesn't't last long compared to old HP 8620-which was a workhorse. Was almost ready to return the printer but gave it another chance & for the price--its decent, but not great. Many paper jams most likely due to the way paper is loaded.

      Hi there.

I’m sorry that you’ve not had a better experience with your printer than what you describe. I’m sorry that the paper-feeding design is inconvenient for you and that it also might be causing the paper jams you’ve experienced. I want to help you resolve this problem. I hope the resources listed below will reach that goal.

If you believe the paper drawer plays a role in the jams, then the jams are probably occurring at the feeder. If that’s the case, I recommend you follow the steps in a guide on our support site to document feeders that pull through too many pages at once or fail to pick up paper at all. Find that guide here:
      - support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01728503

If that doesn’t help, or if the jams occur elsewhere in the printer, I suggest that you contact us directly at +1 800-474-6836 so we can help you assess what’s happening and find the best course of action. To expedite the process, I recommend gathering the following information before the call:

      - Model number

Bad Advertising Ploys and Refuses to Exchange Item

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Best Buy representatives refer to this printer as a free ink printer. However, this is false! After buying the item, one has to work though the installation to determine that it is one of the only printers that does not have the 15 page free ink option! Also, the best buy cashier sold me the 2 year plan that allows repair yet the best buy service rep now says that it is actually a replacement plan when an exchange is requested. I have the box open for one day and best buy now refuses under all conditions to exchange the printer because the purchase is outside of their 14 day exchange by only seven days! Best Buy is NOT satisfaction guaranteed at all when the item is falsely advertised! Bad Customer Service! Best Buy does not want my business because they falsely advertise their products and then refuse an exchange!!!! The website best buy return policy indicates 14 day limit for most purchases; however it did not state all purchases or purchases with extenuating circumstances!!!

Does not perform up to specs. Parts are cheap plastic and easy to break. Would recommend for anyone with any level of printing to spend more money and get a printer that performs better and will last longer.

There is nothing about this printer I like

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Where do I start? The printer's wi-fi indicator shows a strong signal but constantly loses connection with my computer which sits right next to it, and both are about eight feet away from the router (yet my computer is able to connect to and print from the printer in the next room with no issues. It's a CANON, should have gone with that same brand again). Every other time I go to print color I have to do a first and, sometimes, second level cleaning; although this problem seems to have corrected itself somewhat when I stopped using HP ink cartridges. I can't get the printer to print addresses on #10 envelopes no matter how hard I try and how many settings I change. It doesn't allow the option of "just print on what I've loaded" (like my CANON does). And it REALLY doesn't like when I use generic print cartridges, even though I have found them to be more reliable than the HP (see color-printing issues above). You'd think Armageddon was just around the corner when I use a generic cartridge. So, in my opinion, you would do better with another brand.

      Hi there,

I'm so sorry to hear that the printer isn't maintaining a steady connection to your network. I can certainly understand how inconvenient this must be and I assure you that it’s far from the seamless experience that we intend on providing. With that said, let's try a few things to remedy this.

First, I'd recommend taking the recommended steps in this 'Offline Printer' document:
      - Windows: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04249080
      - Mac: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04249334

As a supplement to that, this link will guide you through solutions for a wide range of other wireless issues: hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=Printer_Does_Not_Maintain_Wireless_Connection.net

With regards to the other issues you mentioned, please get in touch with us for support. We'd be more than happy to work with you on resolving this, so you can reach out anytime via your preferred method at this link: hp.com/contactHP

Failed After 12 Months Light Use

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Do not buy this printer (or probably any HP printer). Stopped printing black ink after one year of light service. Replaced cartridges, cleaned printhead numerous times, aligned printhead. Nothing worked. Gaps in black printing started showing up prior to total failure of the capability to print from the black side of the cartridge holder. Prior to that the printer burned through ink rapidly. If you do own an HP printer, I would suggest you stick with the cheaper, smaller capacity cartridges because the printer could fail at any moment regardless of its age.

After 1 Year Still Not Thrilled

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I downgraded from an HP Pro printer for size and ease and after one year, I have to tell you, I'm not thrilled with this HP Officejet 6978. The paper jams constantly -- regardless of whether the feed tray is full or almost empty. It's constantly running "printer maintenance" at all hours of the day and night automatically. The inks run out way, WAY, more than I feel is warranted under "normal" (read: not high volume and not too infrequent to require cleaning and ink declogging) use. I'm annoyed that when it blinks low on ink the printer conveniently reminds me that for a low monthly fee I can obtain an ink subscription when they should be inventing better methods to make the equipment I already own more efficient.
