Great printer, but beware of instant ink issues

I purchased this printer and it works great, until HP shuts off the ink cartridges because you don't buy into their Instant Ink Program. If you buy this printer, be sure to order extra ink when you do. The ink cartridges that come with the printer are Instant Ink cartridges and if you don't buy into the program HP will shut them off making the printer useless, until you purchase your own ink. Also, be very careful about the program. The rate of printing if you go over your limit is a bit high. In my opinion it is a scam and a rip off.

This printer is the worst I have ever owned! I just got it less than a month ago and I have been having problems. It keeps printing half a page and then stopping saying there is a jam, Nothing is jammed but now I have a half printed paper, I clear that paper and try again and it keeps doing the same thing!

I purchased the HP 6798 just a few days ago and had to return it because of the horrid setup and software! This printer is loud! The first page out speed is very slow. It has to click and clack and takes time to position the ink cartridges. HP is of poor quality and poor mechanics. Pros: Price I guess Instant Ink subscription available Cons: Poor software Loud Slow

This printer is unreliable and I frequently have to disconnect to get it working again. Despite being only a couple years old I have to replace it because the scanner never works. I've tried everything with HP support and it's useless. I need a scanner for my business so it's been embarrassing when I can't fax a document. No more HP's.

      Hi there,

I'm so sorry that the printer isn't running as consistently as it should be. Given the need for a reliable scanner for your business, I can definitely understand how inconvenient this all is. With that said, I'd really like to see what else I can do to help.

Since you've already spent some time troubleshooting with support, I'd like to mention another option. HP printers do have a 1-year warranty from their purchase date that covers hardware, so you can contact support to arrange for a replacement, if necessary. To verify the status of your printer's warranty, you can use the following link: support.hp.com/us-en/checkwarranty

We look forward to resolving this with you!

    Stay away

I followed all the positive reviews here and recommend this unit for an elderly couple. Big mistake. I set it up and talked them through how to scan a photo (from the printer). Wrote down the steps and everything. Seemed simple enough and they were scanning away. The next day the options and prompts completely changed. I could not get the printer options to behave in the same manner as before. I then tried the software on the laptop to scan a photo, all was fine except the save dialog kept coming up, despite the option being checked off. The save dialog also didn't create a new file name. It kept asking to overwrite. The first night everything was working fine. Files were saving, didn't have to name the files everytime. The next day the printer interface was completely different and the software on the laptop refused to autoname the files. The unit is going back

      Hi Tony,

I'm so sorry that the settings switched up after the first time the couple used the scanner. I can imagine how confusing this has been, especially given everything running smoothly initially. This must be quite inconvenient, so I'd like to see how we can get this resolved for you.

As I'm not quite sure what might be causing this, I highly recommend reaching out to us for support. We'd be more than happy to work with you on troubleshooting this. You can get in touch anytime via your preferred method at this link: hp.com/contactHP

Though you mentioned you'd be returning the printer, I hope that you'll allow us the opportunity to work through this with you.

    Do not buy this product!

I give this product 1 star because I couldn' t give it -5.  I bought this product in Aug. 2016.   It worked  well for a while and it did a good job on all features.  Until it gave me a "Printer error" message in December.  I repeatedly tried all kinds of corrective measures including downloading drivers, uninstall/reinstall, going to the 123.HP page to activate, the HP "printer doctor" app., re-initializing  the router, etc. In Jan., 2017 I took it back to the store and exchanged it for the same model.  It worked a couple weeks and then the wifi connection died and when I tried to print from my laptop it told me "printer not available" or "printer offline".  I went through all the same efforts with no effect. I bought the 6978 because I'd had an HP 2210 for about 10 years and it served me well, but I wanted a wireless printer.  This one was a great disappointment and I don't know if I will trust HP products again.

    Bad Printhead

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have been buying HP printers for a long time. While there were problems from time to time, most my HP printers lasted quite a few years. So no complains from me in the past. This time with HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is different. Long story short, I bought the printer just about 3 months ago, and it started to show printhead error last week. After going through the User Manual and performed multiple cleaning procedures, the printer worked a few times. Then the black printhead stopped working again. I cannot believe HP quality is such a crap nowadays. It's probably the time to say goodbye to HP brand.

    Junk

I have had this printer for less than two months and it won't print. We have the large sized black ink cartridge in the printer. My wife tried to print out TurboTax forms and got 28 pages of mostly blank with some black spots or partial text here and there. To troubleshoot I tried printing the test page and got no black at all. I wiped the cartridge with alcohol and it printed. 3 days later it stopped again. The printer indicated approximately 3/4 full on the black cartridge and 1/2 full on the 3 color cartridges. I ran the print head clean function, all 3 steps. Now I get color ink warnings on all 3 color cartridges with them showing about 1/5 full and the black cartridge showing just shy of 3/4 full. And still partial black text, mostly blank, but even where there is text it is barely visible. A less than 2 month old printer. HP quality is definitely a thing of the past that no longer exists. It looks pretty, nicely designed, but it is a printer that does not do its major function, PRINT.

    So Frustrated

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The first issue I had was that if I didn't use HP paper the printer jammed. Not thrilled but I can accept that. Then it kept turning off on me, so I hard reset and it was fine. Now I printed something in grayscale and now it won't print in color. I have tried everything that HP suggests, but still no color. I am going back to Epson. Never had a problem, even with the cheat ones.

      Hi Dana,

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience caused by this printer. You seem to have been doing the right things to get it working, so maybe this can be fixed too.

If you turned off the printer setting that got it to print in grayscale, and it is not printing color, it might need to have the cleaning routine ran to clear the printhead nozzles.

Instructions for running the cleaning and other steps to possibly help get color to print are in this online document: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05067448

    Terrible Printer/Experience

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I can count the number of bad reviews that I have left on one hand but the experience with this printer has been so awful that I am compelled to share this in an attempt to help someone else avoid the misery. Our printer is approx 1 yr old and very lightly used. Firstly, each use of the printer takes approx. 3-5 minutes for it to very loudly warm itself up. It then proceeds to print at a tortoise pace. After about 8 months of ownership (and, again, very light usage) the document feeder stopped taking more than one page at a time. Now, 4 months later, it's stopped working altogether and just jams. We started using HP Instant Ink a few months back and we are required to run the clean printhead function repeatedly with almost every printing attempt to be able to print in black. This was not the case prior to using HP Instant Ink. I am sorry to say that based on this experience I will not consider another HP printer/product or service anytime in the near future.

      Hi there,

I'm so sorry to hear that the printer has stopped working and keeps jamming like this! This is extremely disappointing, especially considering the fact that we always aim to provide the most seamless printing experience possible. I completely understand how frustrating this must be, so I'd like to make sure that we get this handled for you going forward.

First, I'm not sure if you're still having issues with slow printing, but if you are, this document should help resolve them:
      - Windows: support.hp.com/document/bud03409
      - Mac: support.hp.com/document/c01928898

As indicated in the above guide, just updating your printer's firmware will often help. You can find the latest firmware download for your printer at this link: support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/model/11161264

Then, to correct any issues with paper feeding, I'd suggest cleaning your printer's rollers to start. This often remedies any paper jams or complications of the like, so you can find the steps for how to do so here: support.hp.com/document/c05291775

A few other fixes you can try include the following:
      - Ensure that you've set the paper guides very precisely, giving specific attention to the paper height guide
      - Review the steps in the following paper jam troubleshooter: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05079673

If this doesn't provide a resolution, I do want to assure you that we have other post-warranty support options for you. One you might consider is posting the details of this issue on our support forums. There's an active community of seasoned experts that would be more than happy to work with you to get your printer running as it should be. I hope this helps and again, my sincerest apologies.

    Wireless connection has failed

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased the HP 6978 at Best Buy Montclair store. When I brought it home a few months ago, I turned it on, connected to my wifi, downloaded the HP software to my PC, and was printing. A week ago, the HP 6978 printer stopped printing wirelessly, requiring me to the room where the printer is and connect a cable to my PC to print. I've removed the HP software from my PC two times, and re-installed the HP software two times. The printer confirms it is set to my Wifi network. The PC is connected to the same Wifi node as the printer. There have been no changes to my wifi equipment or passwords. No changes to my PC. And the HP 6978 will still not print wirelessly. In this day and age when devices connect wirelessly seamlessly, why is this so hard with the HP printer. The online support is automated robots and do not answer my questions. I recommend avoid purchasing the HP 6978.

Bought this about 5 months ago and have had problem after problem. It usually involves ink. Twice it wouldn't print black ink. Now it's not printing colored ink (see the sweet pic of Fareed Zakaria below). Customer service at HP has been terrible, so at this point, the only thing I can do is write reviews. I'd avoid HP products altogether.

Very poor print quality. I only bought it to scan. That's not high quality either. BUYER BEWARE...the ink cartridges that come with it, are junk too. Took off the orange "ink protector", for lack of a better description, on the blue cartridge and ink was all over me, our office carpet, and paperwork. It ruined my shirt and pants. I was more careful with the yellow one, but the same result, though I somewhat contained the ink. RUN!! DON'T BUY THIS OR ANY OTHER PRINTER THAT USES 902 CARTRIDGES!! This lousy $99, printer ruined $1000 worth of clothes and carpet. I'm done buying HP products.

Been stuck with this printer for a few months now and also got the instant ink subscription as well.. Instant ink is a scam.. have had cartridges go empty with out refills being sent so was without a printer for a few days which is a huge inconvenience also the printer is so bad it randomly prints duplicates from time to time which affects instant ink. Just canceled instant ink and printer won't print with their cartridges even though they are full which is bs because I already paid for them with the subscription. The printer is just crap it doesn't communicate with wifi and my computer from time to time which is an inconvenience. I know it seems im rambling but I am a coherent individual and if you made it to the end of this review I just beg you to stay away from anything HP because this product realllly bothers me.

Took 4 hrs to get it to work initially. I had to load, dump, and then completely reload twice to get the printer to recognize my computer. Three weeks later after a total use of printing 6 sheets of paper, it won't recognize any computer in the house. It says its on and it can see the wireless but does not recognize any computers. HP has no help line. Had a computer expert come and look at it as well as Best Buy Geek squad. No one can get it to work. I returned and bought a Cannon.

    Jams, impossible to troubleshoot

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

When my last dependable HP printer died, I bought this one to replace it. This was an inexpensive printer, but I hoped otherwise it would match the last one in quality. I am terribly disappointed; this printer jammed after printing 10 pages or less. The troubleshooting instructions are impossible to decipher. I am hoping that I can get my money back. I'm feeling like I've wasted money, and I've lost confidence in the thought of buying a low-cost HP printer.
