Great laptop overall, but a few caveats

Overall, this is a great laptop. It is fast, the screen looks great, the touchpad is big, the backlit keyboard looks and feels good, it runs games well, the hardware looks really nice compared to what I used to expect from HP, and the tapered edges make it feel slimmer than other laptops of similar sizes. The biggest downside is battery life. The laptop rarely makes it to two hours, and barely does one hour if I am doing anything resource-intensive. I am by outlets frequently enough that it is not an issue, but I never take this laptop for a plane ride or anything like that. Additionally, the keyboard and touchpad settings occasionally reset after a reboot. It is only a couple clicks to restore my settings, but it would be nice to not have to do that every time I boot up the machine (reinstalling drivers had no effect).

My son in college wanted a laptop for school and gaming. He was looking for a Dell but I asked my super tech geek friend what she recommended. She said this computer. Turns out she was right, better computer and less expensive than the one he was looking at. He is thrilled!

I am pleased with the computer so far. One concern I have is that it seems to over heat and I don't know why. I thought the Solid State drive would not have that problem. I think this issue contributed to my last computer (Toshiba Satellite) crashing twice.

Touchscreen is great. Cpu and gpu are lacking a little for a high end gaming laptop. For the price though its great.

Beautiful design, modest performance for price

Let me state that this laptop is gorgeous and among the best designs i have seen in this form factor. It is light but not flimsy; has a very premium rigidity for such a thin laptop. Materials feel great and the textured surfaces make handling the device easier reducing the potential of it slipping out of your hand. Cooling is fantastic and pushing this machine with both heavy cpu and gpu loads results in temps that will not exceed 80C on either component. It came pre-installed with unigine valley/heaven benchmarks, but I benchmarked further with furmark, and firestrike. Anyhow, performance is adequate for the specs but the cooling solution implemented here is so good that things can get pushed further. The GPU can take a 135mhz core overclock and 350mhz mem overclock and temps are unaffected. The cpu can take a 100mhz overclock also without a notable temp increase. Lastly the price/performance ratio of this device is not flattering. Even with tweaks to increase graphics performance by a good 10-15% at $1600 this laptop is performing similarly to the year old lenovo y50 (also oc'd and with a 512ssd) that it is replacing. The gtx960m is a rebranded upclocked 860m afterall. This laptop looks and feels great, the ips display is above average. Boot times are 3-5 seconds. Navigating is very responsive on what i considering one of the better trackpads reminiscent of a macbook pro. However, at this price buyers remorse hit hard considering the lack luster performance in this price range with specs similar to $1000-1200 laptops. Aesthetics alone to me do not warrant the price despite thinking otherwise initially. I returned it and exchanged it for something twice as fast but not as pretty.

The specs on this might be a little steep for the price, however it just went on sale for $1399 (looks like it just went back up!). Even then a little steep...but as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. In this case you are also paying for a gaming laptop that aesthetically awesome. The blued metal hinges look fantastic, and the computer itself is thin and sleek. Performance wise haven't put it through the paces gaming-wise, but it runs CAD programs with ease and boots ridiculously fast (seconds). Some reviews have said the battery life is short-this is true but if I'm just checking e-mail, typing, surfing etc. I have gotten around 4 hours out of it. So not great, not terrible. I'm sure running a game would sap the battery much quicker, so have your charger nearby. Overall though the the specs and looks of this are hard to beat!

    first laptop, love it

First laptop Ive purchase based on reviews, specs and price. idk if the customers review here are real or fake, some look really fake. I had a HP computer before, but not as powerful as this. This thing is fast and LOOKS GREAT!! I love every detail of it. The issue i had is the memory runs out really fast and the battery life dies out after 2 hours factory settings. You cant upgrade the RAM cuz its solder on. You can upgrade the SSD memory but it requires removing rubber molding under the chassis. which is a task to do and i dont recommend doing it. Idk much about graphic cards but it looks great on USF4. USB slots is ok.. if bestbuy would of give me a better deal earlier, I would of gave 5 stars. So this is bargain price right now!

Nice Laptop - If Plugged In

Got this for my son for college. Used it one week before we had to return it due to only lasting 2.5 hours on battery - and that's only using the internet and taking notes during class. Had it not been for the poor battery life we most definitely would have kept it.

Wish the USB ports and Headphone Jack weren't located all in the back of the unit, but over all pretty cool design right? The price will make you flinch, but it is super fast. Wish they would have used a more common Hard drive to be able to swap out later, but I might still do so once I see a price drop.

I got the laptop and right away I noticed that the display is not centered. The left border is slightly smaller than the right. This is a manufacturer's mistake on all the newer models. I don't believe the older ones with the 860M have this issue. Not that big of a deal if the laptop ran as it was suppose to. Lets start with pros shall we... Pros: -It is quite sleek looking and it was made well. -The IPS display is very nice, though readjusting the resolution from 4k to regular 1080p was necessary. With 4k everything was way too tiny. Cons: -It heats up and quick. It can get VERY hot(100+ degrees) on the top middle part of the laptop. The keyboard got uncomfortable at times due to this. -The fans are LOUD. It's not a problem if you're just gaming, but if you're in teamspeak or talking to a friend, then it'll be an issue. -The biggest issue of all was the fact that it couldn't handle GTA 5 and Skyrim, as it should be able to. This version of the laptop with the sandisk memory card has a well known issue of freezing during gaming, and then if you're online you're going to disconnect as well. I've looked online and HP has offered no help on this matter to anyone. All anyone can do is speculate on what the issue is, and most have said they think it might be the SSD(but who knows). Disclaimer: None of this was Best Buy's fault in any shape or form. They've accepted the return and have given me my money back(minus shipping costs) in 2-3 business days as expected. I'm happy with Best Buy, but not with the laptop(unfortunately, as I REALLY wanted to love this laptop and desperately needed a new gaming laptop).
