Scorsese's passion for film shines through in Hugo

Buy this movie! Scorsese's adaptation of Brian Selznick's *The Invention of Hugo Cabret" is surprisingly touching and personal, and great fun to boot. Set inside the walls of a train station, we meet Hugo, a boy who is living alone in the station's clock tower. He spends his days observing the throngs of passengers passing through the station, and spends his evenings carefully reconstructing a mysterious mechanical man--his late father's pet project--using a secret diary. To rebuild the mechanical man -- he steals wind-up toys for the gears and things inside. One day he is caught, and his diary stolen, and that's just the beginning of the film. What follows is an adventure that brings him into contact with many interesting characters, including a spirited girl and a toy shop owner who is not quite what he seems. You'll be surprised where this movie ultimately takes you. It's hard to see at first why Scorsese would be interested in this story, of all the stories he could have filmed, but that eventually becomes clear, and afterward you will realize why Scorsese was the perfect person to film this story. Nominated for a Best Picture academy award, it's well worth your time, and stands up to multiple viewings.

We had seen this movie at the theater and enjoyed the brilliant story presentation and film composition of the famous Martin Scorsese, as well as the superb character acting of all the principals. The artistic feel of this film was not so widely appreciated as I think it should have been. The story line authenticity and basic adherence to the book, borders on non-fiction coupled with seamless special effects truly draws you into that time period and the lives portrayed. The 3-D version really helps with that.

Brilliant film by Martin Scorsese, based on the novel, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." Many great performances including Helen McCrory as Mama Jeanne, wife to Sir Ben Kingsley's Georges Melies, an early French director of silent films. If not for the outstanding cast, Sacha Baron Cohen would have stolen the show, in a surprisingly understated dramatic role, as the Paris Train Station inspector, trying to catch the nimble young thief, Asa Butterfield, who lives in the station and survives on his wits after his father and neglectful uncle die. Chloe Grace Moretz is equal parts charm, intelligence, and curiosity, as the grandchild of Melies, trying to redeem young Hugo and her grandfather's contributions to film, after being forgotten. One of only a handful of films I've every seen in the theater where the audience literally stood up and cheered at the end! A great selection that every family should see.

The story shows how we can misjudge people before we get to know them. We must never do this. It is like this old saying, never judge a book by its cover. The boy was trying to keep old memories alive. No one would listen to him they just saw him as an orphan who did nothing. Little did they know he kept the clocks running in the tower. That says a lot for his character. The robot got fixed and running. The old man in the shop gave him a job but took the boys instructions to finish his dads robot. Only because he would not tell him where he got them. Through this he made a friend. In the end every thing turns out and he has a family and home. I give it a A++ A must see for everyone. A family film

Hugo isn't a film that immediately comes to mind when you think of Martin Scorsese, but that's only because he's directed so many classics. With almost any other director working today, Hugo would be at the top of their filmography as a crown jewel. Hugo is an absolute delight. It's also one of the rare films that not only needs to be seen 3D (pretty much required), but actually uses the 3D as it's supposed to be used. It's there to add depth. And the movie just looks stunning. The film is a must-see for anyone who loves the cinema and what it stands for.

To really understand this movie you have to know at little about the director. Scorsese's first "children's movie" really fails as that. Although there are parts that a kid would like, the over all story and pace of the movie will not hold most children's attention. Scorsese was one who was obsessed with film as a child and now as an adult has spent a lot of time and money trying to preserve classic films that would otherwise be lost or damaged. This is essentially the end message of the film. If you are a Scorsese fan then you may appreciate this but if you are looking for a good family movie then this is probably not the best.

Hugo is a simple yet complex story both stunning and captivating. Shot in 3-D this film captures the imagination. But even in the non-3-D Blu-ray version you still get a sense of all motion and structure. Martin Scorsese has taken a childlike idea and turned it into a grand masterpiece. While the story may seem contrived in places, it has a childlike innocence the pleasure to watch. It captures the imagination but not at the expense of truth and logic. In fact the greatest flaw of the movie might be how beautiful it was devised.

Hugo is certainly worthy of all the attention it received a couple of years ago at the Academy Awards. The history of film making is explained against the backdrop of a boy learning about the world for the first time. The train station "officer' is hilarious, and keeps the movie from becoming too serious. At times, however, the plot comes to a standstill and the movie feels like a documentary. Still a very good watch: I learned something about the birth of special effects and was entertained along the way! I actually looked forward to viewing the bonus material to learn something more!

This movie was a pleasant surprise. I did not read the plot summary (nor read the book) so I knew nothing going into the viewing. The story is fairly predictable, but still told in a way that maintains your attention without boring you. Might be a little too long for little kids. I always enjoy a film that the whole family can watch together without fear of inappropriate nudity or language. The acting was well done and the cinematography helped me sink into the experience (well done period piece). Would like to see it again in 3D since I've read its done well.

Like most cinephiles, I love Martin Scorsese, but his recent films have been hit or miss. I thought Hugo was wonderful and a tremendous use of 3D. Alas, I do not have a 3D TV and don't anticipate ever owning one, so the regular Blu-ray seems like an ideal way to revisit a recent favorite. I only wish Scorsese had recorded an audio commentary like he used to do all the time, but has stopped on the recent movies.

Suitable family fare. This historical fiction gives a lesson in film history that ignites the wonder and beauty of all dreamers. In 3D the clock works take on an added level of exciting environmental intrigue. Ben Kingsley is brilliant as the disheartened innovator in need of redemption who almost misses the chance handed to him by an orphan.

Great in 3D but just as good in 2D. There are so many non-original stories out there for films. What I really liked about this movie is it straddles the line between a "kids" film and something adults can enjoy. The alternate world they live in is JUST believable enough. It makes you want there to be magic in the world. Cool stuff.

I believe this film is the perfect fit for the 10-13 year olds who feel they are too old for the generic family comedies and animated films that are targeted towards them and are still too young for the hyper violent action films and horror films that dominate the teenage market. If you have a child in that age range who is seeking new media, give this film a chance.

I had seen the reviews when this was in the theaters and simply, didn't believe it could be all that great. I was WRONG. It has been years since I saw a movie that I thought was as well done as this. I even got me to look up information on early cinema and Georges Méliès. This showed me that the make-up on Ben Kingsley was perfect, too.

Exceptionally good film. Engaging story, beautiful production design, and probably the best use of 3D ever (yes, even better than Avatar). It's a wonderful movie. Whether you're 10 years old or 90, you'll love it.

This is a great family movie. Has really nice graphics and a good story line. The only negative is the sound. When they are talking it is hard to hear, so you turn the sound up and then the action starts and it's way too loud. Especially if others in the house are trying to sleep. :O).

Hugo is a great story that is well written and executed well by an all star cast. Ben Kingsley is a great actor who brings along both Chloe Grace Moretz and Asa Butterfield's characters into a their roles which can't help but make you feel their performances.
