You have got to be serious fans of Bette Davis or Olivia DeHavilland to enjoy this film. It was better in its time but does not stand up very well.

Whatever Happened to Sweet Charlotte?

After the success of "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane," critics and audiences alike called for a follow up. This movie reunites Bette Davis and director Robert Aldrich, with Victor Buono (King Tut from the '60's Batman TV show) in a small role. Sadly missed, however, is Joan Crawford who was ill at the time.
Davis plays the title character, Charlotte, a frail southern belle living alone on her father's plantation in Louisiana. Several years prior, Charlotte was rumored to have murdered her married lover (played by a young Bruce Dern) rather violently with a butcher's knife.
This affected Charlotte similar to Baby Jane's character from the previous movie. Though not deranged and bitter as BJ, Charlotte is still childish and stubborn. She refuses to leave the plantation after being notified several times that it was going to be torn down to build a highway.
She enlists the help of her cousin Miriam, played by Oscar winner (and Davis' BFFL) Olivia de Havilland to help her keep the property. However, Cousin Miriam is in cahoots with Charlotte's doctor Drew (Joseph Cotten) to screw Charlotte out of her vast inherited fortune.
Charlotte is aided by her trusted maid Velma, played by Agnes Moorehead (Endora from Bewitched) and a British news reporter played by Cecil Kellaway who believes Charlotte did not commit that murder many years ago.
Overall, the movie is well done with great performances. My favorite character is the spitfire Velma. It is similarly demented like 'Baby Jane' particularly when Bruce Dern's character get murdered. It is also dreamlike and somber, matching Charlotte's mindset.
It's a shame Joan Crawford backed out of the movie as I would loved to have seen her take on Cousin Miriam. de Havilland does a fine job, though as a follow up to 'Baby Jane' there's a bit of tension missing from 'Charlotte.' Davis and Crawford did not get along in real life. So it would have been interesting to see how it played out. In the end, sadly, Crawford just screwed herself out of a great movie.
