The Movie: On paper, Kensuke Sonomura's (the Action Legend behind SAMURAI WARRIORS 2, MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3, and DEVIL MAY CRY 4) directorial debut, HYDRA (2019), reads like a Japanese low-budget response to Chad Stahelski's JOHN WICK saga or Sam Hargrave's EXTRACTION (films by other Stuntmen-turned-Directors). Those expecting a basic, straight-forward plot peppered with high-intensity action will receive instead a slow burn Art-House Noir with only two major fight scenes (which arrive in the film's final minutes). Don't get me wrong, those scenes are next-level but curb that particular expectation. The plot is simple, the runtime is short, and the film looks good despite its meager budget. As a filmmaker, Sonamura seems more invested in caring for the characters and building tension. It's up to you to decide if he actually succeeds in doing so. Personally, I'm excited for what he has next in store. The Blu-ray: This is bare bones with no extra features.

The plot in this film is pretty generic, but it features some of the most intense fight scenes since The Raid movies by the director Gareth Evans. Highly recommended.
