This game is made beautifully, with interesting characters, an comprehensive story, and of course, the classic Zelda feel, with the slash combat of the Warriors series. It is the best game Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have done together. Although it has some frame drops, it's nothing TOO significant, and it is still very playable. I recommend it to all who own a Nintendo Switch or have played Breath of the Wild.

So this is going to sound like a lot of contradictions but that's kind of koei techmo's M.O. in my experience.
This is their best Warriors game out of the ones they've done with Nintendo's IPs. The characters are varied and fun to use, I have to stress this since the OG Hyrule Warriors had some great diversity in how characters felt but Fire Emblem really lacked this.
That really helps the game avoid being more repetitive than it already is. There's a lot of combat in this so you'll be having to do a lot of running and slashin.
The gameplay is, well it's warriors. Let me restate that, this is NOT, AT ALL, like Breath of the Wild- it's a hack and slash game. I saw some being confused by this, but it is an entirely different game from Nintendo's Zelda title.
Here's where I contradict myself-
Best warriors game? Yes, certainly, but it's performance is ghastly. Single player you'll be averaging 24fps, co-op? It's EASY to hit SINGLE, DIGITS, with Urbosa being able to do that on command. Her lighting attacks destroy performance & they're common.
You can't play this online or networked, so if you play co-op, where I find these games most fun, you'll have to stomach some incredibly poor performance.
On the flip side enemy crowds are more numerous than Fire Emblem Warriors which would slowly spawn in AFTER you ran into an area.
I'll say this now: this is not going to be fixed. They have never, ever patched their games to do any better at honestly the Switch is at it's limit here. The visuals look really nice as they're trying to look like Breath of the Wild, so that plus the massive armies and all the insane effects going on? Doubtful they're getting any better fps out of this.
If they make some kinda Switch Pro? It MIGHT do better, it depends on what the hardware improved. But as it stands? On the current Switch/Switch light hardware? It's pretty dire.
If you're in portable mode the resolution will drop to around 360p as well (vs the 720p the screen can do).
Do I recommend this game?
Yes. I hate giving it a numeric rating because it's really had to cram such a review like that.
The performance is unacceptably poor, but the gameplay is a blast if you're into it.
Do you need to play this to learn more about the BoTW lore? No. They claim it's a prequel but it's not, at all. Without any spoilers this game will not help anything lore related.
The short: Do you like dumb hack and slash games that you run around at 30mph, killing hundreds of enemies per map? Get this.
Do you want exploring like BoTW?
Avoid.

Hyrule Warriors is such a fun game and the only game that you can actually play Zelda and the other characters. It's a slashing game but this could take you into hours. I got 90 hours into this game until I decided that that's enough already around 90%+ completion of the game. You really get into this and I'm thinking of restarting it again.

I've never been big into the Warriors games. Honestly, I never really knew about them until the original Hyrule Warriors and its Zelda theming caught my attention. So I played the original Hyrule Warriors and...I found it kinda meh. I found Age of Calamity on sale and despite not being enthralled with the first one, the Zelda fan in me could not resist a Breath of the Wild prequel. I could get through the Warriors gameplay if it meant being able to play through the events of the calamity. However, in a table-turning playthrough I found the gameplay in Age of Calamity to be rather addicting while the story ended up being just... meh.
Age of Calamity's biggest strength is how it draws from Breath of the Wild and uses the exact same assets, design, and presentation and then builds an entirely different game around them. You can tell that the team at Koei Tecmo held great respect for, and got help from, Nintendo's Zelda team. It was good enough to get me through the first few missions until the Warriors gameplay clicked. Then it clicked hard and I wanted to upgrade all my weapons, learn character combos, and take on challenges more than I cared about how the story ended. Maybe I need to go back and give the first Hyrule Warriors another shot.

So if you haven't tried it yet, go ahead and download the free trial of this game. If you have tried it or enjoyed any past Warriors titles this one doesn't disappoint. Story wise there is a lot of content here and a lot of great characters with cool upgrades. Aside from that the only somewhat glaring issue is the frame rate. That said it's consistent with the demo. I only had one instance of playing the Zora domain with rain and electric attacks all around that the frame rate dropped very low. I'm somewhat surprised that Nintendo hasn't opted "yet" to patch the game for both a performance and a quality mode like in past titles. Right now we just have a quality mode with visuals running at up to 1080p. But an up to 720p mode with higher fps would be welcome for some levels. That said all of this could be a non-issue if Nintendo releases a "Switch Pro" next year. But frame rate aside this really is a good game (that will hopefully get a patch soon).

Excellent gameplay and story, soundtrack and graphics. If you liked Breath of the Wild this is a must buy, and if you liked the other Warriors games pick it up too. Small frame rate issues for some level/heroes but otherwise runs smoothly. Top tier game.

If you're a fan of the the Zelda games, and a fan of the Dynasty Warrior games, then Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is for you! While Zelda fans patiently await the next installment of Breath of the Wild, this action packed prequal is a great game to have along the storyline.
Hyrule Warriors was a good action based game, but Age of Calamity had a great story to go along with the action and keep one interested. I have seen some people complain about the repetitive nature of the "go here and kill this many" characters/creatures, but when you think about it. Many games repeat some formula of sorts. I think that's where the story comes in, and adds to this action game.
Link, Zelda, and the BotW storyline? What's not to like about this game, unless you're just not into faster paced action.

Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity is an interesting game.
Nintendo created a fantastic story, cutscenes, with voice acting, etc. that tell the story of the war that transpired 100 years before the events in Breath of the Wild.
However, Age of Calamity is not an open world game like Breath of the World. It uses the gameplay of the Hyrule Warriors franchise, but tied into the amazing story.
Therefore, for me, Age of Calamity is a 10/10 whereas I really did not even want to play the original Hyrule Warriors.
Furthermore, there's over twenty hours of gameplay here. Therefore, if you want to know more of the story from the world of Zelda, you will enjoy this game. Nevertheless, be prepared that the actual combat will be similar to Hyrule Warriors and mission based, not open world.

Mosou style games make Mosou Hawnyyy tee hee hee. Koei Tecmo took such an amazing game in Breath of the Wild and plucked out a great cast of characters and put their Mosou touch on it. The story and cinematic are top notch throughout. Filling in the backstory of what happened before the Calamity was so rewarding. I really never saw this prequel coming but I'm so glad it did. Plenty of replayability and unlockables on top of hours of amazing gameplay. You'll definitely run into some frame rate issues throughout but overall it never really detracts from the game itself. So many baddies to take on and giant bosses to face. It's a no brainer if you're a fan of the Legend of Zelda or Dynasty Warrior type games.

I’m a fan of Warriors and Zelda games. The first Hyrule Warriors was one of my most played Wii U games, and I’ve already sunken in dozens of hours into Age of Calamity. It’s fast-paced, high octane fun. The story is deep, and if you like the characters from Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity offers more depth and insight into these figures.
If you’re only a fan of Zelda titles, and not Warriors gameplay, I’m hesitant to suggest this title to you. If you like hack and slashes, with a touch of strategy, Age of Calamity offers an exciting piece to your collection.

I bought this game for one big reason - to explore the story of Breath of the Wild more. I can say that the story telling does a lot to expand on that, but I also had some fun with the combat. It’s fast and frantic, and that’s not something you can always say about Zelda. While it’s improved over the first Hyrule Warriors, it does have performance opportunities. If there is a high volume of enemies on screen (which is often) there will be a good amount of chugging and screen tearing in the performance. I have had the game actively bottom out due to everything going on in battle. Overall when its going well it’s a fun shack and slash, but performance issues can be a factor.

I have always enjoyed the Dynasty Warriors games, and I like the Legend of Zelda, so mixing the two is a no-brainer for me.
Admittedly, I thought this was a remake of the Wii U Hyrule Warriors game, with some extra content. Instead it uses the Breath of the Wild aesthetic and has a completely new story. Not having played BotW, I cannot say if it follows anything with that plot or not.
That said, you get a mix of characters from the various races to be found in Zelda games (Zora, Goron, Gerudo, etc), as well as Link, Zelda and some others to play with, and the ability to upgrade them by collecting items in battle to use at various points on the overworld map.
Repetitive gameplay, but that is normal for these games, and I find it fun.

This game is such a blast to play! Gameplay-wise, it is an improvement over the original Hyrule Warriors, but is not as content heavy, at least not yet. Hopefully DLC is coming soon! All of the characters feel unique, and there isn't anyone that I dread having to be play as, unlike the original (looking at you, Tingle and Agitha).
As a heads-up for fans of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it does play more like that than Hyrule Warriors. Also, it is not a prequel, it splits the timeline in the opening cutscene, so events are a little different than what is seen in the memories.

Great game! I love that it expanded on the story told in BOTW and gave the opportunity to play so many characters integral to the story. The gameplay was fun and immersive. The different characters allow you to experiment with different skills and fighting styles, like in a RPG, which makes it interesting. As an avid BOTW player, I really liked fighting hordes of enemies. It was very satisfying and I think it still has promise for replay ability, even for a hack-and-slash. I was on the fence about buying in the first place, but it was definitely worth it!

If you enjoyed the other Hyrule Warriors game, you'll enjoy this.
Takes a bit of practice to get used to all of the controls, but it becomes second nature after a couple battles.
A nice "prequel" of sorts to Breath of the Wild, that is simple, button-mashing fun.
I would give the edge to the original Hyrule Warriors only because the characters span across all of the Zelda games, whereas this game's characters are from Breath of the Wild (which is a given). The characters are diverse enough to offer different styles of gameplay which is a blast to learn and use.

Got this as a gift for my brother and he really enjoys it. Very different from traditional Zelda games, but it's an interesting way to add to the Breath of the Wild lore. Some of the plot points are probably not what you're going to expect, but overall it's a pretty enjoyable game, especially if you like hack and slash style game play. Also a great game to play with a friend/partner/etc, especially if they're a bit more of a novice/casual gamer. There's quite a bit of content to this game if you plan to 100%, so I definitely think it's worth it.

Popcorn of video games. It has a very fun and addicting arcade feel, which makes every play session enjoyable. Being back in the Breath of the Wild Hyrule is great, even if it is was less deep. The combat is fun and snappy. Only negative is that the graphics aren't that great, there can be large frame dips, which both get worse when playing split screen co-op. However, split screen co-op is a blast and I'm very happy it is here. Like any good bucket of popcorn, it is fun to share or just munch it all up your self.

I bought three great Switch titles when I got my Switch Lite (this title, Breath of the Wild, Shin Megami Tensei V) and while all three are great titles, this is the one I absolutely couldn't put down. I was up until 6:00 am Christmas Eve playing this, and would have kept playing too, but my hands needed a break. Solid Musou series controls and gameplay and a nice variable order to the missions and sidequests make no two playthroughs exactly the same.

The game overwhelms you with too many controls to learn at the start of the game. There’s no pacing when introducing them to you. The tutorial text is small and easily missed when the battle is frantic. There’s also no “practice arena” that guides you the various button combinations.
However, the story falls in nicely with Breath of the Wild and, for a button masher, introduces enough layers to keep the game interesting. The desire to improve your characters’ weapons and levels keeps you engaged.
Whether or not it’s worth the full $60 depends on if you have the tolerance for a more complex button scheme and a seemingly limited method of gameplay (hack’n’slash). Or if you’re just a die hard Zelda fan and want to experience the story line more than anything else.
