This past April marked the 20th anniversary of illmatic being released, and this album is what made Nas a legend. I was 6 when it came out, I appreciates it then as I do now, so I had to get another copy to celebrate.

Easily Considered Greatest Hip-Hop Album ever

Part of the reason for Illmatic's acclaim was the discerning treatment of its subject matter: gang rivalries, desolation, and the ravages of urban poverty. Nas, who was nineteen years old when the album was recorded, realistically depicts the darker side of urbanity, creating highly detailed first person narratives that deconstruct the troubling lives of inner city teenagers. 10/10 Only a couple of other albums can be mentioned in the same paragraph, with Illmatic as far as, Lyricism, Production, Subject Matter, and Significance

One of the Best Albums Ever

For my money, Illmatic is the second best Hip-Hop Album ever, just behind Stankonia by Outkast; not only that, but Illmatic is one of the best albums ever. You can't really go wrong on this one. Nas tops the rap world with such classics as "Memory Lane", "New York State of Mind" and there is the fantastic Hip-Hop anthem "The World Is Yours". Only one downfall: only ten songs; besides that, Illmatic is air tight.
